Math 1014 Assignment 1
Math 1014 Assignment 1
Instructions. Written Assignment 1 consists of four questions, each worth 5 marks. This PDF
document has three pages.
Your submission will be graded on the following criteria.
• Correctness.
• Organization.
• Clarity and e昀昀ectiveness of written communication.
Your solution should be well organized with a clear indication of logical 昀氀ow. Your solution should
start at the top of the page and end at the bottom. Assumptions should be stated 昀椀rst. Choices
of symbols (such as choosing the u in the substitution rule) should be written before applying a
relevant theorem. Make sure to cite the theorems that you used.
You can work together for ideas and seek advice from professors and Math Help Centre (Ross S525)
tutors. However, your 昀椀nal submission must be written in your own words with your own thoughts.
Submission. Submission to Crowdmark will open on Friday, January 26, at 12:00 pm. You will
receive an email from Crowdmark. A link to Crowdmark will also appear in the common eClass
under the Written Assignment section. For Crowdmark technical support, see
• https://crowdmark.com/help/completing-and-submitting-an-assessment/
Please upload clear images or PDFs in the proper orientation. Illegible solutions will receive 0 mark.
There will be no make-up uploads.
To account for technical difficulties and any personal reasons, submissions will be accepted without
penalty until Sunday, February 4, 2024 at 11:59 pm. There will be a 10% per hour penalty after
that.
Question 1 (5 marks). De昀椀nite integrals are useful to science because we can often describe natural
phenomena using de昀椀nite integrals. However, integrating functions arising in real-life science can
be rather challenging. In this exercise, we see how having only the graph of some functions is
enough to answer some questions in science.
The physical interpretation of an integral is a prerequisite knowledge you learned in MATH 1013.
For a refresher, see the Net Change Theorem in Section 5.4 of the textbook.
A group of researchers studies the population of arctic foxes in Northern Canada. Initially, the
researchers identi昀椀ed a population of 1,000 arctic foxes. Due to various factors, the population of
arctic foxes changes over time. The graph of the birthrate B(t) and the death rate D(t), for the
population, are shown below. Time t is measured in years.
D(t)
B(t)
t (years)
2 4 6 8 10 12 14 16 18 20
Suppose you know that the average birth rate over the 昀椀rst 20 years is 90 arctic foxes per
year and the average death rate over the 昀椀rst 20 years is 100 arctic foxes per year. What is
the population of the arctic foxes at t = 20? Show your work.

Question 2 (5 marks). There is often more than one way to achieve certain goal in life. A little bit
of exploration goes a long way. The same can be said in mathematics. In this question, we explore
and compare di昀昀erent integration techniques. Note that “rewrite an integral” and “transform an
integral” have the same meaning.
Consider the integral !
x sin2 (x) cos(x) dx. ( )
(1) Rewrite (or transform) the integral using integration by parts. There is no need to fully
evaluate the integral in this part.
(2) Rewrite (or transform) the integral using the substitution rule. There is no need to fully
evaluate the integral in this part.
(3) Continue from part (1) or (2) to fully evaluate the integral in ( ).
Question 3 (5 marks). Let S be the solid obtained by rotating about the x-axis the region enclosed
by the curves y = ln(x) and y = 0, and between x = 1 and x = e.
(1) Sketch the solid S. Label all axes.
(2) Find the volume of S.

Question 4 (5 marks). Evaluate the integral √ dx by starting with a trigonometric
1 − x2
substitution.
