Performance Task

Investigating the Effect of Natural Fertilizers on Growth of Plants

Introduction
Natural fertilizers provide essential nutrients to the soil, promoting healthy plant growth. Examples include
eggshells (rich in calcium) and banana peels (high in potassium).

The problem
Do the natural fertilizers have an effect on plant growth?

Your task
In this experiment, you will compare the growth of seeds in two pots: one with soil only (control) and
another with soil mixed with a natural fertilizer (experimental). Your goal is to determine how the natural
fertilizer affects the height of the stem over 10 days.

Hypothesis:
Write your hypothesis about the effect of natural fertilizers on plant growth.

Materials needed
 Seeds (e.g., beans, peas, or other easily germinated seeds)
 Natural fertilizer (e.g., crushed eggshells or chopped banana peels)
 2 planting pots or containers
 Soil
 Water
 Ruler (to measure stem height)
 Notebook or observation sheet
 Labels (to mark the pots)

Procedures
1. Label two pots as follows:
- Control: Soil only, no fertilizer.
- Experimental: Soil mixed with your chosen natural fertilizer (e.g., eggshells or banana peels).
2. Fill both pots with the same amount of soil and plant an equal number of seeds in each pot.
1
3. Water the seeds daily with the same amount of water and place the pots in similar lighting conditions.
4. Measure the height of both stems in each pot every day for 10 days using a ruler.
5. Record your measurements.

Recording Data
Record the height of the stem (in cm) for each day:
