MINI TEST 1

Chapter 3: Beyond Rivalry

I. Read the questions first. Then read the passages on Student Book pages 50–53
1. What does sibling rivalry mean?
Sibling rivalry refers to the competition and jealousy that often occur between brothers
and sisters as they compete for their parents' attention and resources.

2. Why will late-life sibling bonds be especially important to Baby Boomers?

Late-life sibling bonds will be especially important to Baby Boomers because as they
retire, face an empty nest, and experience the loss of parents and sometimes spouses,
siblings often turn back to each other for support and a link to their shared past.

3. According to Dr. Antonucci, what happens to our “convey of people” as we age?

According to Dr. Antonucci, as we age, the size of our "convoy of people" gradually
declines due to death, sickness, or moving. Brothers and sisters who may not have been
important earlier in life can become significant in old age.

4. Name two reasons why siblings don’t turn to each other for instrumental help.
a. Siblings are often about the same age and may be equally needy or frail
b. Many people consider their siblings as safety nets who will save them after everything
else has failed. It is more acceptable to seek help from children or parents rather than
siblings
5. What is the main idea of the reading? (write in 1 sentence)
The main idea of the reading is that despite early-life rivalries, siblings often find
unexpected strength and renewed connections in their relationships as they age,
especially in the face of critical life events and reduced social circles.
II. Read the passage below. Choose the best word for each blank from the box. Use
each word once.
bond closer drift estranged evoke
generation link parent rift spouses

Brothers and sisters sometimes fight during childhood and then (1) drift apart as young
adults. Marriage and their own families occupy much of their attention. Adult siblings
can also become (2) estranged when their (3) spouses don’t get along. This type of
tension can even create a (4) rift between siblings that were previously close.
Later in life, siblings often become (5) closer. Sometimes this is due to experiencing a
common loss such as the death of a (6) parent. The sibling bond (7) is an especially
strong relationship because brothers and sisters of the same (8) generation share a
common (9) link to their early family life. Talking and reminiscing about family can (10)
evoke positive feelings and happy memories.
