Features of Cloud Storage

After uploading a file to the server, the data will be transferred and distributed among cloud
storage service providers.
Users can access cloud data through websites and mobile applications.
◼ Scalability: Huge storage capacity, provide storage space in PB units
◼ Lower cost: Reduces the cost of investing in buildings or maintaining internal storage
networks
◼ Information management: No geographical restrictions. Files can be extracted simply by
connecting to the network → reduce risk of data loss
◼ Smartization: Only a small amount of management is required + presence of backup
mechanisms

Proliferation and impact of false information

The Internet contains a vast amount of information + circulation speed is fast → difficult for
the general public to verify the source of each piece of information.
False information is intentionally spread on the Internet → influence public opinion or cover
up the truth
How does the proliferation of false information disrupt social order?
e.g. People use Internet/social networking sites as a platform to spread misleading
information (specific example: content farm → high volume of low quality articles → lack
proper research → misinformation) → forwarded and shared by others → extend the reach of
fake news → chaotic information environment → create social panic → conflict and
mistrust among individuals, media and authorities → escalate panic-driven behaviors (virus
→ avoid safety measures like vaccine → spread virus or natural disasters → hoarding
supplies) → anxiety and stress, people overwhelmed → social harmony broken → social
well-being reduced → reduce social QoL

Impact of the Internet

Give rise to digital divide (-ve)
There are gaps in the use of IT among different generations or countries or social classes.
Low level of education and technological capability + lack of information literacy →
some people lack the basic knowledge to use the Internet → digital divide →
information gap
Solution: building information infrastructure to expand Internet coverage
e.g. 5G network, hardware such as servers, network hubs and computers

Impact of social networking sites

Developing online relationships (+ve/-ve)
Users engage in two-way communication with the media, online communities and users
Sending, forwarding or sharing messages as a social activity → build online relationships.
e.g. Users create and publish content of their own interest → gives rise to new models such
as key opinion leaders (KOLs) and the Internet celebrity economy.
+ve: same as social inclusion (see below, sense of community etc.)
+ve: require teams for efficient content creation e.g. management, marketing, technical
support → create job opportunities → unemployment rate decline → job stability/security →
rise in wage levels → stable income → more disposable income → higher purchasing power
→ able to afford quality products → better material life → higher living standard →
economic QoL enhanced

-ve: People seek attention → overuse social networking sites → social anxiety, low
self-esteem, depression → mental health problems → mental well-being harmed → spiritual
life worsened → social QoL reduced

Engaging in global issues (+ve/-ve)

Many people rely on social networking sites to find out what is happening around the world
→ give immediate responses.
Large number of users → information spreads even faster → easy to form a
collective emotion
+ve: promote public awareness of global issues → make better informed decisions about
health, finances, daily activities → specific examples!! → QoL enhanced

-ve: manipulation of public opinion (proliferation of false information, see above…)

Increasing risk of personal privacy violation (-ve)

Users’ personal information is collected and shared.
Social media companies benefit from using it for advertising campaigns or re-sharing.
Digital footprints or over-shared information of users on these platforms are collected without
their knowledge → personal information may be disclosed → lose sense of safety and
personal space → anxiety and discomfort → make them feel vulnerable → mental well-being
harmed → spiritual life worsened → social QoL reduced

Enhancing social inclusion (+ve) or Forming the echo chamber effect (-ve)
Social networking sites use algorithms → analyze users’ dynamics → push relevant content
according to their preferences.
People from diverse backgrounds communicate with circles of like-minded individuals who
share similar views
+ve: → build supportive communities regardless of geographical limitations → form
connections based on shared interests → build interpersonal relationship → expand
social circle → promoting social inclusion → spiritual life enhanced → social QoL enhanced

-ve: creates a relatively closed environment → reinforces their existing positions → limit
exposure to diverse perspectives → ignore other stances and opinions → similar voices are
constantly repeated → information received becomes homogeneous and repetitive → echo
chamber effect → lack of understanding of other opinions → more misunderstandings →
more conflicts → reduce social harmony → social well-being worsened → worsen spiritual
life → social QoL reduced
Features and impacts of AI
(Note: Low chance because = HW2)
AI has perception capabilities, such as vision and hearing
AI analyzes massive amounts of data mainly through machine learning.
Machine learning gives rise to “deep learning” algorithms → computers mimic the operation
of human neural networks.
For image and speech recognition, natural language processing and self-driving technology
etc.

Building a smart city

Take the advantages of information and communications technology infrastructure
→ optimize urban management systems
→ Development of smart manufacturing, smart economy and smart transportation →
improve the digital infrastructure → help increase the efficiency of individuals, enterprises
and even governments + strengthen urban management.
Example: AI + Healthcare
Smart diagnosis: AI analyze and record information on medical history → provide
personalized treatment recommendations
Rare diseases drug research and development

Bring convenience: Smart devices, such as smartphones and smart home technology, enable
users to manage tasks effortlessly, from controlling home appliances remotely to scheduling
appointments and accessing information on-the-go → bring convenience → eliminate the
need for time-consuming processes → reduce the complexity of daily activities → allow
individuals to focus on their personal and professional pursuits → social well-being
