2 SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
The device left the factory in perfect condition relative to technical safety. To maintain this
condition and for hazard-free operation, all of the following instructions in this manual must be
carefully heeded.

Correct and safe use of this device requires that operating and service personnel be familiar with
generally valid safety guidelines, comply with them, and heed the special safety comments that
are listed in this manual. Where necessary, points on the device that are safety-sensitive are
marked.

i
Since the device is electrical equipment, it should only be commissioned and
operated by trained personnel. Maintenance should only be performed by
expert, competent personnel. Repair is only possible in the epro factory.

2.1 Using the device

The dual-channel monitor for inductive displacement transducer MMS 6410 is a component of
the MMS 6000 machine monitoring system. In conjunction with one or two inductive measuring
sensors the monitor is used to measure and monitor the absolute elongation or displacement,
as well as other distance measurements on all types of turbines, compressors, fans, gear units
etc. The monitor should only be used for measurement purposes.

Adjusting elements:

The machine is adjusted so that it is ready for operation. Usually adjustment elements such as
jumpers do not need to be changed or modified. If switch changes are necessary for device
configuration then these changes are described in the manual.

2.2 Supply voltage

This device must be supplied with safety low voltage SELV (EN 60950) 24 V. The voltage
required for operation must be drawn from a separate power supply. This power supply must
satisfy the DIN IEC 61010 guidelines (safety guidelines for electrical measurement, control,
regulating, and laboratory equipment).

The supply voltage is transferred into the monitors by DC/DC converters and is galvanically
separated from the 24 V supply. When connecting the supply voltage note that the 24 V can be
touched, and consequently must be disconnected from the mains power, ensure that it is not
hazardous to the touch (VDE 0100 Part 410).

2.3 Radio interference, EMC immunity

The device is carefully shielded and tested to be technically immune to radio interference, and
it satisfies the standards in accordance with EN 50 081-1 and EN 50 082-2. When connected
to an external power supply you must ensure that this power supply likewise satisfies these
standards. Radio interference can occur when the monitor is switched together with other
peripheral devices that are not properly shielded against radio interference.

Safety Instructions Page 9

2.4 Owner's responsibility

If there is reason to suspect that hazard-free operation, and thus adequate machine protection
is no longer possible, then the device must be taken out of service and safeguarded from
unintentional operation. This is the case

Ĥ if the device shows visible damage

Ĥ if the device no longer works

Ĥ after any type of overload (e.g. storage, transport) that exceeds permissible limits.

If measurements or tests must be executed with the MMS 6000 monitors

during operation, or if the device must be replaced or taken out of service, then
ensure that machine protection is not impaired by these measures and that
the machine can be switched off by interrupting the electric circuits.
STOP Consequently prior to starting such work the machine protection must be
deactivated by the responsible specialized personnel.
After ending the work the machine protection must be immediately reactivated
by the responsible specialized personnel.

2.5 Instructions on ESD safety

The MMS 6000 monitors contain sensitive semi-conductor elements. These

components can be damaged or destroyed when handling the monitors - e.g.
when changing jumper settings.
Consequently prior to handling the monitors suitable measures must be
undertaken (e.g. ESD bracelet) to prevent electrostatic discharges via the
STOP monitor electronics.
Electronic components should only be transported and stored in ESD safe
packaging.
There is a higher probability of electrostatic discharge occurring if there is dry
weather with relative humidity below 30%. In this case the monitors must be
handled with special care when performing maintenance and repair work.

3 APPLICATION AND STRUCTURE

3.1 Application
The dual-channel monitor for inductive displacement transducer MMS 6410 is a component of
the MMS 6000 machine monitoring system. In conjunction with one or two inductive sensors the
microcontroller-controlled monitor is used to measure and monitor the absolute elongation or
displacement, as well as other distance measurements on all types of turbines, compressors,
fans, gear units etc.

The two channels of the monitor can be used as separate channels or they can be linked together
via the configuration. The following operating modes are possible:

Ĥ Dual-channel

Ĥ Addition / subtraction

The characteristic values can be output via a 0/4 ... 20mA current output per channel.

3.2 Structure
The MMS 6410 monitor is designed as a standard euroboard (100 mm x 160 mm) and has an
anodized front panel that is 6 HP (approx. 30 mm) wide. The monitors of the MMS 6000 system

4.1.2 RS 485 interface connection

 Terminals: d4: A (RS485), b4: BP (0V, common), z4: B (RS485)

The RS 485 bus is used for configuration as well as for the connection to the master computer
and analysis systems, for example.

Communication works in accordance with the master/slave principle; the MMS 6000 monitors
are always switched as slave. A maximum of 31 devices can be connected on one bus.

i
Additional information on setting the interfaces are available in the operating
manual of the MMS 6910 configuration software.

RS 485 bus operation requires an electrical termination on the first and last bus device. This
means that a 120 : resistor must be switched between the connections “A” and “B” for the
computer (i.e. interface converter) and for the (physical) last device on the bus. In addition, bus
line “A” must be switched to +5 V via a pull-up resistor at the first or last device, and line “B” must
be switched to ground via a pull-down resistor.

This is done with plug-in jumpers that are on the controller board. Fig 4 shows the position of
the jumpers.

Fig 4: Jumper position RS 485

To activate the bus terminator and to place lines “A” and “B” on the references, plug the jumpers
as shown in Fig. b). Fig. a). shows the jumper position for deactivated bus termination and open
references (delivery status).

For trouble-free operation of the RS 485 bus lines “A” and “B” in one monitor

! must be placed on their references (+5V; ground), this is only possible if the
bus terminator jumper is also set.

Alternatively, the bus can also be terminated with a soldered or crimped 120 :

advantage that the bus terminator cannot be lost inadvertently when replacing
the monitor.

4.1.3 Sensor connection

The monitor has two differential signal inputs for inductive half-bridge sensors, e.g. epro type
series PR 9350. Inductive or rheostatic sensors in half-bridge circuit with impedances between
200 and 600 : or corresponding differential transformers can be used.

Channel 2: d6: Supply 2+ b8: Supply 2-

For sensor supply a carrier frequency output with 4 V / 5 kHz is present per channel. The supply
outputs are galvanically separated from the monitor supply, as well as from the other monitor
wiring.

 Terminals: Channel 1: z10: AIN 1+, z8: AIN 1-

Channel 2: d10: AIN 2+, d8: AIN 2-

Fig 6 shows the PR 9359 sensor connection. For sensors in half-bridge circuit the center tap
must be connected with AIN1+ or AIN2+, and AIN1- or AIN2- must be bridged with Supply 1-
or Supply 2-. The connection of the end taps of the half-bridge (A and C for PR 9350) determine
the measurement direction, i.e. they can be swapped for the opposite measurement direction.

Potentiometer as sensor

Instead of an inductive sensor, a precision potentiometer in half-bridge circuit can be used.

Because the input voltage range of the monitor is only 2.5 Veff, for full utilization of the
potentiometer range, a series resistor must be switched in each of the two supply lines of the
sensor. The total resistance R g of the series connection (series resistor+potentiometer+series
resistor) must be in the range 200 to 600 : and the series resistor values should each be approx.
20 to 25% of the total resistance. Use the following formula to determine the series resistance:

First from the effective values of the sensor supplyV CF, the maximum input voltageV INmax is
determined, and from the potentiometer resistance R L the total resistance R g is determined.

V INmax

Example with R L = 300 :, V CF = 4 V und V INmax = 2,5 V:

Then, the series resistor can be determined from the total resistance.

Differential transformer as sensor

Instead of an inductive sensor or a potmeter, a differential transformer can also be used.

Fig 8 shows the connection of a differential transformer type PR 9314/41. For use of a
differential- transformator, it has to be supplied with an AC voltage (e.g. via the contacts Supply+
and Supply- of the MMS 6410). The sensor signal, resulting from the displacement of the sensor
rod, has to be connected to the contacts AIN+ and AIN+ of the MMS 6410.
The maximum output Signal (at AIN+ / AIN-) of the differential transformer equates to the
damped input signal (supply AC voltage at Supply+ / Supply-, with the PR9314/41: factor approx.
0,1). In respect to the displacement direction, the sensor signal will be in-pase in one working
direction and it will be phase shifted by 180° in the other working direction.
The signal at the connectors AIN+ respectively AIN- define the working direction at the MMS
6410 monitor. Thus, if you need to invert the working direction, you can just reverse the polarity
at the connectors AIN+ and AIN-.

4.1.4 Synchronisation - input / output

 Terminals: Input: d12: Sync IN1, d14: Sync IN2

Output: z12: Sync OUT1, z14: Sync OUT2

This input and output are used to synchronize the carrier frequency oscillators in systems with
more than one MMS 6410 monitor. If multiple MMS 6410 monitors are working together there
is a risk of mutual influence.
Operating Manual Monitor for inductive displacement transducer MMS 6410
Installation and mounting Page 18

Depending on the monitor configuration the monitor works as master the monitor takes over
the synchronization of the other monitors or as slave the monitor will be synchronized.

One MMS 6410 monitor in master mode can synchronize up to 5 MMS 6410 monitors in slave
mode.

In slave mode the oscillators of both channels are synchronized by the synchronization pulses
on the SYNC input. If the monitoring of the slave monitor detects that the synchronization signal
is missing, then the monitor will take over the synchronization after an appropriate wait time. The
wait time depends on the slave priority that is set in the configuration program. With priority 1
it synchronizes immediately after detection; with subordinate priority it waits in case a slave
monitor with higher priority takes over the synchronization. The slaves emit a synchronization
signal on their synchronization output that is derived from the available synchronization signal
if present, and if not present that is derived from its own oscillator.

Sync series connection

Synchronization of multiple MMS 6410 monitors in slave mode with slave priority is intended for
a sync series-connection where a master synchronizes the slave with first priority etc. The
advantage of this connection is that in the event that the master or slave fails, all other units
remain synchronized.

4.2 SMB sockets

The sensor raw signal can be tapped at the two front panel SMB sockets. The SMB socket
Sensor signal 1" is assigned to channel 1 and socket Sensor signal 2" to channel 2. The
sensor raw signal is the unfiltered, in-phase output signal of the sensor. The reference point of
the SMB sockets is on system ground (GND). In order to prevent reactions on the measurement
signal, the signal is buffered and short-circuit proof.

The SMB sockets are galvanically connected with system ground.

Consequently, strictly follow the following points:
When operating the monitor in systems with floating ground, monitor
STOP malfunctions can occur when connecting measuring devices to the monitor.
In plants of this type we strongly recommend that you operate the measuring
devices via appropriate isolating amplifiers on mains power, or use
battery-powered devices.

4.3 Installation
1. Check the slot wiring prior to installing the monitor.
2. Push the MMS 6410 monitor into the prepared slot and press it with light pressure into the
plug connector.
3. Hand tighten the two fastening screws on the front panel to secure the monitor.

i
For installation or de-installation of MMS 6000 monitors it is not required to
switch off the supply voltage. The monitors can be inserted in the slot and also
removed from the slot without interrupting the supply voltage.

If measurements or tests must be performed with the MMS 6000 monitors, or

if the devices must be replaced or taken out of service, note that this can
impair machine safety and the machine could be switched off due to the
interruption of power circuits.
STOP Consequently, prior to starting such tasks, the machine protection must be
deactivated by the responsible specialized personnel. After concluding the
work, the machine protection must be immediately re-activated by the
responsible specialized personnel.

4.4 Commissioning
If the customer did not order settings in accordance with his specifications, the monitor will only
be ready for operation under certain limited conditions. Consequently monitor configuration is
required for first commissioning. Predefined configurations in the various monitor modes are
available to simplify the configuration.

Configuration Page 24

5 CONFIGURATION
This chapter describes the configuration of the MMS 6410 monitor using the MMS 6910
configuration software.

During operation, the monitor works autonomously and does not require a connection to a
computer.
The monitor is configured via a computer that is connected via the mini DIN diode socket on the
RS 232 interface, or via the RS 485 bus in the device.

The configuration program, as well as the MMS 6000 system manual, are included on a
CD-ROM that is part of the MMS ParaKit (order no. 9510-00027). In addition this ParaKit also
includes the following components:

Ĥ Interface cable for connection of the RS 232 configuration interface

Ĥ Two measurement cables for measuring the sensor signals

Ĥ Plug connector 9-pin to 25-pin (plug / socket)

5.1 Configuration procedure

For monitor operation it is necessary to configure parameters and load them into the monitor
using the MMS 6910 configuration software. This chapter describes parameter entry with the
configuration software.

All general functions of the configuration software, such as user

i administration are described in the MMS 6910 operating manual. The

functions described in this manual apply for the MMS 6410 monitor and are
necessary for monitor configuration.

The configuration software must have been installed on the computer in order to enter
parameters. Instructions for installing the software are included in the product information that`s
enclosed with the software. The following steps must be executed:

Ĥ Switch on the monitor supply voltage

Ĥ Connect the interface cable to computer and monitor

Ĥ Start the configuration software

Ĥ Select the interface on the computer

Ĥ Setup communication between computer and monitor

Ĥ Scan the connected monitors or manually select the monitor type

Operating Manual Monitor for inductive displacement transducer MMS 6410
Configuration Page 25

Ĥ Create the configuration (enter the parameters) and adjust the sensor

Ĥ Load the parameters into the monitor

After executing these steps the monitor is ready for operation.

5.2 Starting the configuration software

Start the software by double clicking on the icon

and enter ID and password.

Four different access authorizations determine the extent to which the user is allowed to define
or change the configuration data.

Ĥ Access authorization DISPLAY only permits connection setup and online display.

Ĥ Access authorization OPERATOR permits complete configuration of parameters for the

monitor, calling all displays, and sending all required commands.

Ĥ Access authorization SERVICE is only intended for trained personnel.

Ĥ Access authorization PLANT is only intended for epro personnel.

When the software is started the first time, the access data for the USER authorization level are:

ID: first

Password: user

When entering ID and password, pay attention to upper case and lower case. To start the
measuring operation, the parameter set for monitor operation must be created and loaded into
the monitor now.

5.3 Monitor selection and entry

After starting the configuration software, the monitor type for which the parameter set will be
created has to be selected.
Operating Manual Monitor for inductive displacement transducer MMS 6410
Configuration Page 26

1. To open the “Choose module type” selection window, right click on “MMS Configuration” in
the left part of the screen. A pop-up menu will appear. In this menu, left click on menu option
“Add Module”, this will open the “Choose module type” selection window.

Fig 15: Menu item “Add Module”

i
If a monitor is already present in the tree structure, then an additional monitor
cannot be added via the RS 232 interface. Adding multiple monitors is only
possible when operating on an RS 485 bus.

2. All monitor types that can be configured with this software, are listed as icons in the “Choose
module type” selection window. Left-click on the icon of the monitor MMS 6410 and confirm
the selection with the “OK” button.

Fig 16: Window “Choose module type”

5.4 Selecting the monitor subtype

After the monitor type has been selected, a window will open for selection of the monitor subtype.

Fig 17: Window “Subtype”

Operating Manual Monitor for inductive displacement transducer MMS 6410
Configuration Page 27

Open the selection list by clicking on the arrow at the right of the line. The monitor mode can now
be determined via the subtype selection. The following modes are available for selection:

6410 Dual - channel: The parameters (measuring range, current output,

limit values, etc.) are determined separately for each channel. Each
channel calculates its own characteristic values and is monitored for limit
value excesses and measuring chain errors. The characteristic values are
output via the current output that belongs to the respective channel.
6410 Add/Sub: The input parameters are specified separately for each
channel. The output characteristic value is formed by addition or
subtraction of the two measured values of channel 1 and channel 2. The
characteristic value is monitored for limit value violation and is output via
both current outputs.
Select the desired mode and confirm with the “OK” button.

5.5 Entering / editing parameters

Use the “configuration” “edit” menu option, or click on the hammer icon in the toolbar, to
open a window with multiple tabs for entering parameters.

The number and names of the tabs vary depending on the selected monitor

i subtype.
The "period" decimal separator is written for all numeric value entries. All units
are specified invariably.

The tabs are all structured identically with the exception of “Administration” (see Fig 18).

1. Tab

2. Column Parameter: Name of the parameter

3. Column Value: Input fields, list boxes, and check boxes for entering parameters

4. Column Unit: Display of the parameter unit

5. Column Permissible range: Range in which the parameter value must be located. For some
parameters there is a “Selection” button in this column, which opens a selection menu.

The sensors used must be adjusted to the MMS 6410 monitor. The procedure
for this is described in section 5.7.

The following sections describe the specific tabs of the configuration window and the function
of the parameters contained in the tab. Sample configurations are available in the chapter,
“Description of the applications”.

5.5.1 Tab ”Administration”

Display field “Last change by”

The entry shows the name of the user who made the last change to this configuration and saved
it in the monitor. This entry cannot be changed here.

Display field “Last change on”

The last changes to this configuration were made and saved in the monitor at the displayed date
and time. This entry cannot be changed here.

The maximum text length is 30 characters.

Input field “Machine Name”

A designation for the machine block where the monitor is implemented can be entered here. The
maximum text length is 30 characters.

5.5.2 Tab “Basic”

Parameters can be configured for general monitor functions in the “Basic” tab. All functions set
here apply to the entire monitor. Settings that impact channels always apply to both channels.

Fig 20: Tab “Basic”

Check box “Limit multiplier active”

Operating Manual Monitor for inductive displacement transducer MMS 6410
Configuration Page 30

If this box is checked then the “Limit level multiplier” function is enabled. This function is switched
on or off via binary input d18.

Input field “Limit level multiplier”

The limit level multiplier increases the limit values of all alarms (alert and danger, channel 1 and
channel 2) by a factor to be entered here, if input d18 of the monitor is set on LOW.

limitvalue increased + limitvalue * factor

The limit level multiplier will be inactive if binary input d18 is set to HIGH, or is open (unwired).

Check box “Limit suppression active”

Activate this function to suppress the limit values if Channel Clear is no longer present.

This is the case if channel monitoring measures carrier- frequency supply- current that is higher
or lower than the limits, and thus detects an error. All other conditions (monitor malfunction, etc.)
that could lead to suppression of the alarms remain unaffected by this parameter (see chapter
“Monitor supervision”).

i
“Limit suppressed” means the alarm outputs are in base setting (no alarm
status).

For the single channel mode, the limit suppression is triggered depending on the status of the
single channel. If the characteristic value is calculated by linking both channels and monitored
on limit exceedings, then only the malfunction of both channels will cause limit suppression.

Input fields “Temperature danger alarm” and “Temperature alert alarm”

Factory specified settings are input in the fields for Temperature alert alarm and Temperature
danger alarm. If the monitor's ambient temperature (as measured by an integrated temperature
sensor) exceeds the alert limit value, then the Channel Clear LEDs on the front of the monitor
will flash rapidly. If the danger limit value is exceeded, then this is evaluated as a monitor fault.
As a consequence the Channel Clear LEDs go out and the alarms will be suppressed (see
chapter “Monitor supervision”).

The preset limit values of 65°C and 70°C can be changed with the OERATOR authorization.

If there is change (increase) in the preset limit values then there is a risk of
STOP incorrect measurements or component failure at higher temperatures.

List box "Synchronization"

If multiple MMS 6410 monitors are working together in one system, there is a risk of mutual
influence. This effect can be eliminated by synchronization of the carrier frequency oscillators
of all MMS 6410 monitors. For the synchronization one monitor works in master mode and all
other monitors work in slave mode.
Operating Manual Monitor for inductive displacement transducer MMS 6410
Configuration Page 31

Use this list box to specify whether the monitor will work as "Master" or "Slave".

Master In master mode, the carrier frequency oscillator of channel 1 synchronizes the
second channel and outputs a synchronization signal for additional MMS 6410
monitors.

Slave In slave mode, the monitor uses the synchronization signal that is present on the
synchronization input to synchronize both channels. If a signal is not present on
the synchronization input then the monitor synchronizes itself internally.

List box "Slave priority"

Use this list box to set the slave priority of the monitor to a value of 1 ... 5. This selection is only
relevant for a monitor in slave mode and series connection of the synchronization (see section
4.1.4 - Synchronization - input / output). If with this circuit, the synchronization signal from the
master is missing, the slave with priority 1 will take over the synchronization after a brief check
time. If the monitor with slave priority 2 does not receive a synchronization signal, then this slave
will take over the synchronization after an appropriate check time. All monitors constantly check
their synchronization in order to react in the event of a missing synchronization signal.

List box "Signal combination"

This list box is only enabled if you have selected the mode "6410 Add/Sub". This is where you
specify how the measurement results of channel 1 and channel 2 will be calculated. Two
possibilities are available for selection:

Ĥ Signal combination "Add":

Characteristic Additive + Measurand Channel1 ) Measurand Channel2

Ĥ Signal combination "Sub":

Characteristic Subtractive + MeasurandChannel1 * Measurand Channel2

5.5.3 Tab "Channel"

Use this switch to activate or deactivate the channel. With deactivation the calculation of
characteristic value, limit value monitoring, and channel monitoring are switched off. The
channels cannot be deactivated in "6410 Add/Sub mode.

Input fields “Point Id” and “Description”

These fields can be filled in by the user as desired. Preferably, the Point Id number is entered
in accordance with the power plant identification system, under which the measurement is listed
in the drawing set. This description is stored in the monitor and is used for identification. The
maximum length for the Point Id text is 20 characters, the maximum length for the description
text is 40 characters.

Input field “Sensor - type" and button “Selection"

Enter the sensor type of the sensor used in this field. Selection is executed via a selection
window that is opened by clicking on the “Selection” button in the “Permissible range” column.

Fig 23: Selection window “Sensor selection”

The desired sensor type can be selected per mouse click from the list in the left side of the
window. The data of the selected sensor are displayed in the right side of the window.

If a sensor is used that is not in the list, then select “User” and enter the sensor data to the right
in the "Name" and "Sensitivity" fields.

Ĥ Input field “Name”

This field can be filled in as desired. The maximum text length is 22 characters.

Ĥ Input field “Sensitivity”

This is where the sensitivity specified in the data sheet of the sensor is entered (unit: mV/V).

Click on the “Apply” button to enter the data in the "Sensor type" and “Sensitivity” fields of the
“Channel” tab.

When selecting a sensor there are additional sensor-specific settings that must be made. The
parameters “Initial value measuring range”, “End value measuring range”, and “Sensor working
range” are set depending on the sensor.

List box “Sensor function”

Use this list box to set the sensor function. Two possibilities are available for selection:

Half bridge The connected sensor is set up as half bridge. This half bridge is
supplemented in the monitor. The sensor supply voltage supplies the bridge.
The monitor analyzes the bridge imbalance. The measured value
(measurement path) is proportional to the diagonal voltage.

Differential The connected sensor is set up as differential transformer. The sensor supply
transformer voltage supplies the primary coil. The measurement signal (measurement
path) is proportional to the output voltage of the secondary coils.

Input field “Sensitivity”

The appropriate sensitivity is entered automatically in this field when selecting the sensor type.

The sensitivity can also be entered directly at this point (unit: mV/V). The required value is
provided in the data sheet for the sensor.

Input fields “Initial value measuring range” and “End value measuring range”

The measuring range as defined by the initial value and end value is the range that is used for
the characteristic value. Initial value measuring range and end value must be within the
measuring range specified in the sensor data sheet with due consideration of the measuring
range shift. The measuring range can be defined as range -x ... 0 ... +x. The value -x then
represents the start of the measuring range and the value +x represents the end of the
measuring range, the zero point can be any point between start and end. The range can also
be defined from 0 to +x.
Operating Manual Monitor for inductive displacement transducer MMS 6410

Click on the "Apply" button to transfer the values entered here for linearization as “Sensor
working range initial value [mm]” and “Sensor working range end value [mm]” in the
“Linearization” window.

Input field "Measuring range shift"

For example measuring range drifts or characteristic values that deviate slightly at the zero
position due to aging, can be compensated with this parameter.
Example:

Due to the correction, the measuring range and accordingly the current output range will be
shifted and reduced by the value entered in this input field. In Fig 24 the reduction of the
measuring range for a shift of -0.5 mm and +0.5 mm are shown as an example using a
measuring range of -20 ... 0 ... +20 mm.

Fig 24: Diagram - measuring range reduction

The shift will get effective by loading the parameter set into the monitor. The current output will
be adjusted accordingly.

Input field “Sensor working range”

This is where the working range of the sensor is entered. Refer to the data sheet of the respective
sensor for the value (e.g. PR 9350/02: measuring range 50 mm), it is required for the adjustment
of the input amplifier.

Check box “Measuring range invert”

If the measuring range of the characteristic value shall be inverted proportionally to the distance
sensor - measurement object, i.e. the minimum distance shall correspond to the end of the
measuring range, then click on the "Measuring range invert" button.

Tab “Linearization” and button “Insert”

This tab is used to enter linearization data. The linearization table contains up to 16 linearization
points (interpolation points). Each interpolation point is defined by a displacement measuring
value and the output voltage measured for this measurement object position on the ADC (range
0 ... +5V). Between the interpolation points the system calculates with a linear curve
characteristic. To input such a table for channel 1 click on the "Insert" button in the "Channel 1"
tab, and accordingly on the button in the "Channel 2" tab.

i
An online connection to the monitor is required for input of the linearization
table.

Creating a linearization table:

Read section 5.7 "Sensor calibration" before creating the linearization table.
!
1. Define the measuring range of the sensor in field “Sensor working range”. To do this, enter
the displacement value [mm] for the beginning point of the curve in line “Begin” and enter
the displacement value [mm] for the end point of the curve. While recording the interpolation
points, the voltage values for the beginning point and end point are determined.

Thereafter the interpolation points for the table have to be input, up to 16 points per table
are possible. Each interpolation point (linearization point) is defined by a displacement
measuring value and the relevant input voltage.

2. Insert the desired number of interpolation points into the table by clicking on the “Insert”
button. The new interpolation point is inserted via the interpolation point where the cursor
is located. Click on the “Delete” button to delete the interpolation point where the cursor is
located.

3. Enter the displacement value in the right column [mm] of the table, in the first input field that
is not grayed-out.

4. Set precisely this displacement value (move the measurement probe into the appropriate
position).

5. Click on the “M” button. This triggers the voltage measurement, the measured voltage value
for this displacement will be shown in the input field [V]. At the same time the interpolation
point that has just been created, is displayed in the diagram window.

6. Repeat steps 3 to 5 until all interpolation points are defined.

7. Click on the "Apply" button. The displacement values [mm] of the “Sensor working range
begin” and “Sensor working range end” parameters are transferred into the input fields
"Initial value measuring range" and "End value measuring range".

8. Click on the “OK” button to exit the linearization window.

Input fields “KKS” and ”Designation”

The description for the calculated value can be entered here as desired by the user. Preferably
the Point Id number is entered in accordance with the power plant identification system under
which the measurement is listed in the drawing set. This description is stored in the monitor and
is used for identification.

Check box “Channel active”

Use this switch to activate or deactivate the calculated channel. At deactivation calculation of
characteristic value and limit value monitoring are switched off.

Input fields “Begin” and “End”

Use these parameters to define the measuring range for the calculated characteristic value. The
measuring range can be defined in the form 0 ... +x or -x or 0 represents the beginning of the
measuring range and +x represents the end of the measuring range. For the measuring range
form -x ... 0 ... +x the zero point can be anywhere between beginning and end.

The current output is depicted on this range. If the monitor is operated in the “MMS 6410
Add/Sub” mode then both current outputs are assigned to the calculated value.

Input field “Shift”

For example, measuring range shifts or characteristic values that deviate slightly at the zero
position due to aging, can be compensated with this parameter (see section 5.5.3, parameter
”Measuring range shift”).

Check box “Invert”

If the measuring range of the calculated characteristic value shall be inverted proportionally to
the distance sensor-measuring object, i.e. the minimum distance shall correspond to the end of
the measuring range, then activate the "Invert" check box.

5.5.5 Tab “Data acquisition”

Use this tab to set general monitor function parameters for data acquisition. Data acquisition is
only relevant for the recording of values for run-up / run-down in the online display.

Fig 27: Tab “Data acquisition”

All functions set here apply to the entire monitor, not to individual channels.

List box “Control”

If speed control is selected, then the key pulses, if present on the key input, are used to display
the speed. If the diagnostic system has been activated (check box "Support diagnosis") the
system will automatically switch to speed control.

Input field “Subspeed”

If the diagnostic function has been activated, recording of a run-up will start when the entered
subspeed was exceeded or the recording of a run-down will be stopped when the entered
subspeed was underrun.

Input fields “Normal speed” and “Speed tolerance”

If the diagnostic function has been activated, the recording of a run-up will be terminated when
exceeding the limit ”Normal speed minus speed tolerance” or a run-down started if this limit is
underrun.

Input field “Overspeed”

If the entered overspeed is exceeded, the speed display in the online display is limited (speed
"88888"), otherwise this parameter is irrelevant for the monitor MMS 6410.

Check box “Support diagnosis”

Use this switch to activate or deactivate the diagnostic function. If there is a check mark, the
run-up or run-down data will be saved.

5.5.6 Tab “Output channel”

Use this tab to set the alarm limits and the current outputs. The number of output channel tabs
depends on the selected mode.

With “Dual-channel” mode, one tab is available for each channel. The tab “Output channel 1”
is assigned to channel 1 and the tab “Output channel 2” is assigned to channel 2.

Only one output channel tab is available for the ”Add/Sub” mode, which is assigned to the
calculated value.

Fig 28: Tab “Output channel”

Check box “Alarm outputs active”

Use this switch to activate limit value monitoring. If this switch is set, the input fields for the input
of limit values will be enabled. If function alarm monitoring is deactivated, the alarm outputs will
be set to their initial state.

Input fields “Upper danger alarm” and “Upper alert alarm”

Enter the limit values for the upper alert and the upper danger alarm. The effective direction of
the danger alarm is upward, e.g. if the characteristic value exceeds the limit value then the alarm
will be triggered.

The alarm limit for Alert must be set lower than the Danger limit.
!
Input fields “Lower danger alarm” and “Lower alert alarm”

Enter the limit values for lower alert and lower danger alarm. The effective direction of the danger
alarm is downward, e.g. if the characteristic value underruns the limit value, the alarm will be
triggered.
Operating Manual Monitor for inductive displacement transducer MMS 6410
Configuration Page 40

The alarm limit (absolute value) for Alert must be set higher than the Danger
! limit.

List box “Alarm hysteresis”

The hysteresis should prevent uncontrolled switching of the function output by amount of limit
value with which the characteristic value fluctuates. The hysteresis can be set to a value of 0 ...
20% of the measuring range. The set value refers to the alarm limits (upper / lower alert and
danger alarm).

The hysteresis determines the amount by which the characteristic value must underrun or
exceed the limit value after a limit violation, in order to reset the alarm. Fig 29 and Fig 30 show
this relationship.

List box “Latching”

If the latching function is activated, the alarm state will be latched if there is a limit violation. In
this case the alarm can only be reset via the configuration software, provided the limit violation
is no longer present and command “Reset Latch Channel 1” or “Reset Latch Channel 2” is given
in menu “Commands” menu. In the "6410 AddSub" mode, latched alarms can be reset via the
command "Reset latch channel 1 & channel 2.

List box “Delay”

Use this list box to set the response delay of the alarms to 0...5 seconds. The set value refers
to the alarm limits (upper / lower alert and danger alarm).

List box “Current output response time”

To avoid getting unsettled measuring values, the characteristic value current can be smoothed
with a 0...10 second adjustable time constant (0 seconds = no settling).

The response time causes a slow change in the current at fast changes of the characteristic
value. At a response time of 10 seconds and a sudden change of the characteristic value from
100% to 0% it will take approximately 10 seconds until the current has dropped by 63% (left
diagram in Fig 31). The right diagram in the Fig 31 shows the change curve for a sudden change
of the characteristic value from 0 to 100%. The change curve follows an e-function

List box “Current output”

The current characteristic value can be set to 0 ... 20 mA or 4 ... 20 mA with this list box.

Check box “Current suppression”

This switch activates suppression of current output in the event of a system error. If an error is
detected via the monitoring function, and if Channel Clear switches off as a result, the output
current will be set to “0”. Prerequisite for this is, that the current output range must be set to 4
... 20 mA; for the range 0 ... 20 mA this parameter has no function.

the mini DIN diode connector of the cable into the RS 232 socket of the monitor.

The RS 232 configuration interface is galvanically connected to system

ground. Consequently, strictly heed the following points:
When operating the monitor in systems with floating ground, monitor
malfunctions can occur when connecting measuring devices to the monitor.
STOP
In these types of systems it is strongly recommended that laptops are not
operated with mains-supply, the configuration should be executed with a
battery-powered laptop.

5.6.2 Interface settings

In order to setup a connection to the monitor, the interface must be set in the configuration
software. These settings are made in window “Settings”.

1. Open the ”Properties” window in the ”Options” menu via menu item “Settings”.

5.7 Sensor calibration

The sensors that are connected to the MMS 6410 monitor must be adjusted to the monitor. The
adjustment process defines the electric central position of the sensors. For bridge circuits in this
position the bridge is “balanced” the output voltage of the bridge circuit is zero.

Execute the following steps for this adjustment process:

1. Establish the connection to the monitor, click on the magnifying glass icon in the
toolbar.

2. Set the subtype of the monitor. To do this, select the desired subtype (see section 5.3 and
5.4) and load the default configuration of the subtype into the monitor (see section 5.6.3).

3. Open the adjustment window (Fig 32) Menu "Options" click on menu item
"Adjustment...".

6. Push the tracer back into the sensor and place the tracer on the electrical center position.
This defined position is required to adjust and linearize the measuring range.

Use the display fields “Shortest value” and “Current value” in the “Adjustment 6410” window
(Fig 32) to find the center position.

7. To do this, move the tracer through the entire work range of the sensor the value in the
“Current value” display field will change.

8. The configuration software notes the shortest value found in this manner and displays it in
the “Shortest value” display field.

9. Move the tracer in such a manner that the current value agrees with the shortest value
you have found the center position of the sensor.

10. If two sensors are connected to the monitor then repeat steps 3 to 5 for the second sensor.

11. Use the “End” button to close the “Adjustment 6410” .

The diagrams show the curve of characteristic values for both channels during the run-up or run-
down. For modes with calculated values single channel values are displayed here.

Monitor time
The monitor time must be set for temporal assignment of the run-up or run-down data. This is
done in the “Options” menu via menu item “Set module time ...“ .

Fig 40: Set monitor time

Click on the “Set module time” button to match the internal monitor clock and the PC time. Close
the window by clicking on the “OK” button.

The monitor does not have a real-time clock. Over a period of years significant

i time deviations can occur.

When switching off power or cold-start the monitor, the date and time and
run-up or run-down data will be lost.

7 MONITOR SUPERVISION
The chapter describes the monitor supervision function and the messages that are output by the
monitor.

The status monitoring (monitor supervision) verifies the functionality of the monitor and the
connected sensors. It is designed to ensure that there is signal notification if there are problems
with measured values. This is made in three different ways:

Ĥ Through the Channel Clear LEDs on the front panel.

Ĥ Through the Channel Clear outputs 1 and 2

Ĥ By setting the respective current output to 0 mA (only for current output 4 ... 20 mA with
current suppression).

Ĥ Via the online display of the MMS 6910 configuration software.

Functional disturbances are divided into two groups. Disturbances that affect the monitor are
allocated to the group of monitor errors. Measuring chain disturbances are allocated to the group
of channel errors.

Monitor errors include:

Ĥ Firmware errors

Ĥ System supply errors

Channel errors include:

Ĥ Sensor errors

i
For operating modes with channel calculation if there is a channel error or wait
time after channel error, only Channel Clear of the affected channel is
deactivated.

Monitor supervision

The carrier frequency supply current is measured to monitor the sensor and the supply line
(sensor connecting lead). If the current exceeds the upper limit of 33 mAeff (20%) or underruns
the limit of 4 mAeff (20%), a channel error will be reported. If the carrier frequency supply
current is within these limits, sensor impedances of 200 : to 600 : and their supply line
resistance are in the Channel Clear (good) range. Short circuits, interruptions and significantly
deviating impedances will be detected as errors.

The effect of monitor supervision

The table below shows the different signals of the Channel Clear LEDs, their meaning, and the
behavior of the outputs with these signals.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions Page 70

10 FAQ - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can I operate measuring chains and sensors supplied by other manufacturers with
MMS 6000 monitors from epro?

Answer: MMS 6000 monitors are generally suitable for connecting measuring chains and
sensors from other manufactures. However, you must ensure that the electrical characteristics
of the sensors agree with the requirements of the monitors. Due to the open configuration you
can individually adapt required operating parameters, like measuring ranges, sensitivities,
scales, etc. to any measuring chains and sensors using the MMS 6910 configuration software.
If in doubt, contact epro GmbH and request a release.

How can I verify whether connected measuring chains / sensors are intact and are
functioning properly?

Answer: First, check the Channel Clear LEDs and the status flags (chapters “Visualization” and
“Monitor supervision”). The function of a measuring chain can also be checked via the SMB
sockets on the front panel. These sockets show the input signal of the monitor.

Which cables are recommended for connecting the sensors / measuring chains, and
how is the cable shielding connected ?

Answer: To comply with the specifications relative to EMC immunity and transmission behavior
the signal converters must be connected to the monitor with paired, twisted, double shielded
cables.

Cable length up to 2 km LiYCY-CY 2 x 2 x 0.25mm2

Conductor resistance max. 75:/km

Capacity approximately 120 pF/m

(core/core, shielding grounded)

See the manuals provided by the manufacturers of the respective sensors for additional
instructions regarding the connection. We recommend connecting the exterior cable shielding
to the protective earth of the cabinet and the interior shielding to the shielding ground.

How can I verify that the monitor is ready for operation?

Answer: The Channel Clear LEDs on the front panel of the monitor signalize the monitor status.
If the LEDs are lit, the monitor is functioning properly. Additional information in this regard can
be found in chapter “Monitor supervision”.
Operating Manual Monitor for inductive displacement transducer MMS 6410
FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions Page 71

Communication cannot be established between computer and MMS 6000 monitor.

When switching on the online display, the measured values are displayed in red.

Answer: Correct communication between computer and monitor requires correct settings of the
interface parameters on both sides. The interface in the monitor is permanently set. Check the
settings in the configuration software. In the "Options" menu "Properties" you can check the
setting for the interface in the "Connecting" tab and change it if necessary (see section 5.6.2).
Another cause could be defective cabling between monitor and computer.

Can a new data set be loaded into the MMS 6410 monitor without affecting operation?

There is no machine protection when sending parameters. The alarm outputs

are switched to base setting, the current outputs (4 ... 20 mA with current
STOP suppression) are set to 0 mA and the Channel Clear outputs are set to
“Channel Clear not ok” (i.e. open).

What should I look for when checking MMS 6000 monitors?

Answer: In the online display information can be shown on the screen that enables you to draw
conclusions about the actual operating status. Firmware version and serial number can also be
displayed here.

Prior to starting work always check whether the monitor's outputs are
switched to trigger (parameter: "Limit supervision active") - if yes prior to
STOP starting work the triggering of the machine must be deactivated. This is
easiest to check using the configuration button (tab "Output channel" -
parameter "Limit supervision active").

Operating Manual Monitor for inductive displacement transducer MMS 6410
Glossary Page 83

13 GLOSSARY

Operating range (WR): The operating range is within the measuring range and can be
equal to it - however, it cannot exceed it.

Operating range measuring range

Sensitivity (SE): Change of the sensor voltage / measuring chain output voltage
divided by the change of the physical value (e.g. distance [mm])
depending on sensor type. [V/mm]

Free space (FS): The sensor head of the eddy current sensor extended by an
angle of 45° to both sides.

Gap (GA): Basic gap - distance between measurement object and sensor
head, for reasons of mechanical protection of the sensor and to
avoid measurement errors, this Gap should not be underrun.

Characteristic value Is determined from the measurement value and is always based
(CV): on the set operating range.

Measuring range (MR): Physical measuring range of the sensor.

Measurement surface Is determined by the diameter of the sensor head (eddy current
(MS): sensor).

Measurement value (MV): Physical measurement value e.g. distance sensor -

measurement object.

Measurement signal Electrical signal on the input of the measurement amplifier

(MS): proportional to the measured value

Sensor amplitude (SW): Measurement distance that is measured by the sensor. For cone
measurements, due to the cone angle, this value is often greater
than the measuring range of the sensor.

Effective principle The output is disabled in good status (actual value in the
Open circuit mode: permissible range) and conducts if there is a message.

Effective principle The output is conductive in good status (actual value in the
closed-circuit mode: permissible range) and disabled if there is a message.
