1- SCOPE OF DESIGN
This document outlines the Design Basis for the Fire Water Sprinkler and Addressable
Detection system, which is utilized for the purposes specified in accordance with NFPA
codes and standards.
• Design of Fire Sprinkler System.
• Design of Fire Alarm System.
• Fire Sprinkler Hydraulic Calculations.
• Fire Pump Demand.
• Water Demand.
• Bill of Material for Sprinkler and Alarm System.

2- CODES & STANDARDS FOLLOWED

1) Fire Protection System Requirements NFPA - 1 & 101
2) Fire Sprinkler System NFPA - 13
3) Automatic Fire Detection System NFPA - 72
4) Water Supply System NFPA - 13,15,20&22

3- NFPA STANDARDS AND DESIGN GUIDELINES.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) outlines the fire protection measures
necessary for restaurant spaces and their associated equipment.

NFPA-1 FIRE CODE.

Automatic fire-extinguishing systems shall be installed in accordance with the terms of

their listing, the manufacture instructions, and the following standards where applicable:

1- NFPA 12
2- NFPA 13
3- NFPA 17
4- NFPA 17A
5- NFPA 750

Water-Based Fire-Extinguishing System.

• The water required for listed automatic fireextinguishing systems shall be

permitted to be supplied from the domestic water supply where the minimum
water pressure and flow are provided in accordance with the terms of the listing.
The water supply shall be controlled by a supervised water supply control valve.

• Where the water supply is from a dedicated fire protection water supply in a
building with one or more fire sprinkler systems, separate indicating control valves
and drains shall be provided and arranged so that the hood system and sprinkler
systems can be controlled individually.

NFPA-101 LIFE SAFETY CODE.

Extinguishment Requirements.
The following assembly occupancies shall be protected throughout by an approved,
supervised automatic sprinkler system.
(1) Dance halls
(2) Discotheques
(3) Nightclubs
(4) Bars
(5) Restaurants

NFPA-13 STANDARD FOR THE INSTALLATION OF SPRINKLER SYSTEMS.

• Cooking equipment (such as deep fat fryers, ranges, griddles, and broilers) that is
considered to be a source of ignition shall be protected in accordance with the
provisions of 8.9.1. 8.9.8.2 Deep Fat Fryers. 8.9.8.2.1 A sprinkler or automatic
spray nozzle used for protection of deep fat fryers shall be listed for that
application. 8.9.8.2.2 The position, arrangement, location, and water supply for
each sprinkler or automatic spray nozzle shall be in accordance with its listing.

Light hazard occupancies include occupancies having uses and conditions similar to the
following:
(1) Animal shelters
(2) Churches
(3) Clubs
(4) Eaves and overhangs, if of combustible construction with
no combustibles beneath
(5) Educational
(6) Hospitals, including animal hospitals and veterinary
facilities
(7) Institutional
(8) Kennels
(9) Libraries, except large stack rooms
(10) Museums
(11) Nursing or convalescent homes
(12) Offices, including data processing
(13) Residential
(14) Restaurant seating areas
(15) Theaters and auditoriums, excluding stages and prosce‐niums
(16) Unused attics

Ordinary hazard (Group 1) occupancies include occupancies having uses and conditions
similar to the following:
(1) Automobile parking and showrooms
(2) Bakeries
(3) Beverage manufacturing
(4) Canneries
(5) Dairy products manufacturing and processing
(6) Electronic plants
(7) Glass and glass products manufacturing
(8) Laundries
(9) Restaurant service areas
(10) Porte cocheres
(11) Mechanical rooms.

Ordinary Hazard (Group 1).

The following shall be protected with OH1 occupancy criteria in this standard:
(1) Spaces with moderate quantity and low combustibility of contents.
(2) Stockpiles of contents with low combustibility that do not exceed 8 ft (2.4 m).

4- WATER DEMAND.
A total of 7,688 gallons of water is necessary for the fire sprinkler system to operate
effectively for a duration of 30 minutes.

5- FIRE PUMP DEMAND.

A pump with a capacity of 256.3 GPM is necessary for the fire sprinkler system to
simultaneously operate 12 sprinklers, with an additional allowance of 50 GPM for hose
usage in this area.

6- CONCLUSION ACCORDING TO THE HYDRAULIC CALCULATION

The sprinkler system has undergone hydraulic calculations to ensure an average
imbalance of 0.010 gallons per minute (gpm) at each node, with a maximum imbalance of
0.02 gpm when one sprinkler is activated. When twelve sprinklers are in operation, the
average imbalance remains at 0.010 gpm, while the maximum imbalance increases to
0.15 gpm, in compliance with NFPA 13 standards. The system requires a minimum source
pressure of 20.0 psi, with a necessary minimum pressure of 34.8 psi, and is designed to
deliver a flow rate of 7,688 gallons over a duration of 30 minutes. At node 1, the
minimum pressure recorded is 7.2 psi.
