Witricity" .: Plugs and Wires Could Soon Become A Thing of The Past

The document discusses wireless electricity transfer using a technology called WiTricity. WiTricity uses coupled resonant objects of the same frequency to efficiently transfer energy between devices without wires or cords. Researchers at MIT have experimentally demonstrated transferring power over distances of a few meters using WiTricity. This has the potential to allow devices like phones, laptops and other electronics to charge without plugging in, eliminating the need for cables.

ABSTRACT

From the topic WIRELESS ELECTRICITY TRANSFER we come across that we are developing a technology which involves power transfer without the help of wires sounds quite confusing , but ofcourse its possible in todays era.. it is a revolutionary idea which involves transferring electric power in the outer space wirelessly. But now question arises, what kind of physical phenomenon can we use to do this wireless energy transfer? Well the answer to this question involves many reserches and deep thinking been done by the various scientist and physicists. They introduce the concept of WiTricity.

INTRODUCTION
The value of electricity can be given an equivalent importance as the need of oxygen in our living is. For running various appliances,objects,instruments,gajets..etc.it is very obvious that the power of power is very very dominant, in every respect. Now the concept of wireless terminology has brought into account the various aspects which has proved to be immensely beneficial in countrys growth, which may be either economical, social or environmental friendly.Plugs and wires could soon become a thing of the past.US researchers have outlined a relatively simple system that could deliver power to devices such as laptop computers or MP3 players without wires. The tangle of cables and plugs needed to recharge today's electronic gadgets could soon be a thing of the past. The concept exploits century-old physics and could work over distances of many metres, the researchers said. "There are so many autonomous devices such as cell phones and laptops that have emerged in the last few years," said Assistant Professor Marin Soljacic from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and one of the researchers behind the work. MIT team experimentally demonstrates wireless power transfer, potentially useful for powering laptops, cell phones without cords. MIT researchers helped develop a theory that promised much more efficient data networks; then they were the first to put it into practice. In contrast, WiTricity is based on using coupled resonant objects. Two resonant objects of the same resonant frequency tend to exchange energy efficiently, while interacting weakly with extraneous off-resonant objects.

Wireless electricity transfer

Imagine a future in which wireless power transfer is feasible: cell phones, household robots, mp3 players, laptop computers and other portable electronics capable of charging themselves without ever being plugged in, freeing us from that final, ubiquitous power wire. Some of these devices might not even need their bulky batteries to operate. A team from MIT's Department of Physics, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and Institute for Soldier Nanotechnologies (ISN) has experimentally demonstrated an important step toward accomplishing this vision of the future.

How wireless energy could work ?

The answer the team came up with was "resonance", a phenomenon that causes an object to vibrate when energy of a certain frequency is applied. When you have two resonant objects of the same frequency they tend to couple very strongly. Typically, systems that use electromagnetic radiation, such as radio antennas, are not suitable for the efficient transfer of energy because they scatter energy in all directions, wasting large amounts of it into free space. To overcome this problem, the team investigated a special class of "non-radiative" objects with so-called "long-lived resonances".When energy is applied to these objects it remains bound to them, rather than escaping to space. "Tails" of energy, which can be many metres long, flicker over the surface. Hence, a simple copper antenna designed to have long-lived resonance could transfer energy to a laptop with its own antenna resonating at the same frequency. The computer would be truly wireless. Any energy not diverted into a gadget or appliance is simply reabsorbed. The systems that the team have described would be able to transfer energy over three to five metres. However, these require an uninterrupted line of sight, and are therefore not good for powering objects around the home. Consumers desire a simple universal solution that frees them from the hassles of plug-in chargers and adaptors. Wireless power technology has the potential to deliver on all of these needs.

Good bye wires!!!

Various methods of transmitting power wirelessly have been known for centuries. Perhaps the best known example is electromagnetic radiation, such as radio waves. While such radiation is excellent for wireless transmission of information, it is not feasible to use it for power transmission. Since radiation spreads in all directions, a vast majority of power would end up being wasted into free space. In contrast, WiTricity is based on using coupled resonant objects. Two resonant objects of the same resonant frequency tend to exchange energy efficiently, while interacting weakly with extraneous off-resonant objects.
