In the utmost terrifying time of your life, would you choose the moral,
courageous decision or hide from sacrifice out of fear? This is the story of a family
with such faith, love, and trust in Jesus Christ which is the reason for their
generosity and kindness to others. In one of the most evil times in History, the Ten
Boom Family stood strong as a light in the darkness, leading others so they
It was 1937 in the Dutch City of Haarlem and the Ten Boom Family were
celebrating their 100th year anniversary for the father’s watch shop. They lived in
a building called the “Beje” where their rooms and the shop were combined. They
were a family of six with Corrie, Betsie, Nollie, and Williem as the daughters and
son. They were a very Christian family in their faith and actions. As the war got
worse and the Germans invaded Holland, the Ten Boom family went through
curfews, rations, and identification cards. The family thought of a way that they
can help others in a time of such evil. Corrie started by helping a Jewish doctor and
his family. Then this turns into accepting all Jews that show up at their doorstep.
They build a fake brick wall with secret rooms. They have an alarm that signifies
that German police are there and the Jews need to hide immediately. However, the
Germans eventually invaded their house and took the family in for intense
questioning. Corrie admits to pushing the alarm when police came, so the family is
taken to a camp and they are separated. Their father dies 10 days after being in a
camp. Nollie eventually is released and Betsie and Corrie stick together through
such hardship. While in the camps, Corrie and Betsie shared the gospel and the
truth of Jesus Christ. Betsie eventually died from weakness and Corrie lives to see
her release. Corrie goes back to Beje and tries to adjust to her life there. She
traveled giving many talks and shared her story and Jesus’ love until her death in
1983.
A significant quote in the Bibliography that was said by Betsie was “We must
tell people, Corrie. We must tell them what we learned” (The Hiding Place 234).
This stood out to me because a big theme in this story is sharing the Gospel and
teaching others how to love. When Corrie and Betsie were in the camps, they did
exactly that. They told everyone everything they knew about prayer, love, God, and
to not lose hope. When Corrie went back home, she didn’t have a clue what God
still had left for her to do on this Earth. It wasn’t until she remembered this quote
that Betsie had said to her then she knew she had to share her whole life story
from the beginning. From the courage of her father, to the forgiveness in Corrie’s
trusting in God looks like. Combatting and standing strong against such an evil
force with love is inspiring for me to love better in my life. If Corrie and Betsie can
go through unspeakable experiences in the camps and still give generous love to
even their enemies, why can’t I be compassionate in every moment of my life? Why
can’t I have the courage to share Jesus in every opportunity I have, when they did
it all the time and risked their life doing it? This painful, inspiring story gives me
strength, as it does to a lot of people, to share Christ to others, and live and suffer
In Conclusion, each and everyone of us has a hiding place in Christ. The Ten
Boom family found there’s the moment they decided to trust in Jesus. And Jesus
gave them the gift of sharing that hiding place with others. Let us never forget the
