TRACK 01 Bloomsday 1 Lesson One

Bloomsday is celebrated on June 16th every year. The best place to be-
gin the day is Eccles Street in Dublin, where a middle-aged man in Victorian
dress looks impatiently at his watch. It´s 8.00 am, and it´s time for festivities
to begin. But who is he and what are we celebrating? His name is Leopold
Bloom, and we’re celebrating the novel in which he appears: James Joyce’s
Ulysses.

A DAY IN THE LIFE

Ulysses recounts a single day in the life of Bloom - June 16th, 1904 -and
we follow him as he goes about his business. Bloom leaves his home to buy
his breakfast, grilled mutton kidneys, and a crowd of people follow him,
many in Victorian clothes themselves.
This signals the beginning of the day as people throughtout Dublin sit
down to breakfast in pubs and restaurants, though most prefer a traditional
Irish breakfast of sausages, bacon, beans, and a pint of Guinness.

STREET THEATRE

The day is full of colourful events with walking tours, street theatre and
readings. Many of the places described in Ulysses still exist; people wander
the streets with the novel in their hands, looking for places like th chemist
Sweny’s in Lincoln Place, the National Library, and Davy Byrne’s pub, where
Bloom has lunch.
Legend tells us Joyce knew people would imitate his hero and choose what he
thought was the most disgusting dish on the menu: a gorgonzola sandwhich
and a glass of burgundy.

LOVE HATE RELATIONSHIP

Joyce famously complained: “How sick, sick, sick I am of Dublin! I long to

be out of it.” Perhaps he would prefer the festival held in Szombathely Hun-
gary (the birthplace of Bloom’s father, Rudolf Virág), or the street festival
held in Philadelphia - where the Rosenbach Museum has the original Ulysses
manuscript.
Joyce love to tease academics, so he would choose the International Joyce
Symposium in Paris. He once remarked: “I’ve included so many puzzles that
it will keep the professors busy for centuries!”

TRACK 12 Dining in the Dark 13 Lesson Thirteen

Imagine. You are sitting in a restaurant. The

waiter puts your food in front of you. You can

smell it. You can touch it. You can taste it. But you

cannot see it. There are no lights or candels in the

restaurant. All the windows and curtains are closed.

None can see their food. Everyone is in the dark.

The first “dark dining” restaurant opened in

Switzerland in 1999. It was called Blindkuh or Blind

Cow in English. People came to the restaurant to try

a new way of eating. When people did not see their

food, they gave more attention to the food’s smell,

taste, and feel. It was a new experience.

Today, cities from San Francisco, California, to Bangkok, Thailand, have dark-din-

ing restaurants. How does it work? The restaurant is completely dark. You can-

not see anything. You feel like you are blind. Your waiter helps you walk to your table.

You cannot bring lighters, cell phones, or anything that can make light. The menu does

not have many choices. You take your time and pay attention to your food. You talk

about your food with your friends. You taste, feel, and smell the food in a new way.

What about you? Do you want to try dark dining? Or are you happy to keep the lights on?

I am Miss Lisa Mc Way, I am Mr. Mc Way’s daughter. I am 15 years

old. My father is teaching English to me. I am studying the basic level. When
I began this course I had a lot of problems to understand English, for that
reason, I thought that English was difficult. However; I have been learning
as soon as I have taken the lessons; therefore, I like English very much now. I
will be in the intermediate level in February. Maybe we can practice our En-
glish in Barinas’ English club.

Finally, I want to say that I would like you to learn and approve the ba-

Lesson Fifteen 15 The Hoover Dam

Hoover Dam is as tall as a 60-story build-

ing. It was the highest dam in the world
when it was completed in 1935. Its base
is as thick as two football fields are long.
Each spillway, designed to let floodwaters
pass without harming the dam itself, can
handle the volume of water that flows over
Niagara Falls.

The dam had to be big. It held back what was then, and still is, the largest
man-made lake in the United States. The amount of water in the lake, when
full, could cover the whole state of Connecticut ten feet deep. Only a huge
dam could stand up to the pressure of so much water.

Hoover Dam did, and continues to do, all the things its supporters hoped
it would. It protects southern California and Arizona from the disastrous
floods for which the Colorado had been famous. It provides water to irrigate
farm fields. It supplies water and power to Los Angeles and other rapidly
growing cities in the Southwest. In the early 21st century, almost a million
people still come to visit the huge dam every year.
