Warm-up Questions
Introduction
• What is meant by the past continuous tense?
• What are the key words for using the past continuous tense?
• What does it consist of?
• What are the structures of questions in the past continuous tense?
• What is the structure of negative in the past continuous tense?
• What is the structure of passive in the past continuous tense?
Definition:
• Past Continuous Tense:
-It is used in a complex sentence, when two past actions occurred, one was happening and the other was
completed.
I saw him when I was walking to school.
-To express past actions which happened at the same time and which were both continuous.
They were playing tennis while I was doing my project.
-To show what was happening at some time in the past:
At six o’clock last night I was reading a book.
- To replace the present continuous tense in reported speech:
Direct: he said “I ‘m looking for my bags.”
Indirect: he said he was looking for his bags.
Remember:

• Some verbs are not used in the continuous form:


Have(with the meaning of own-possess or suffer from an illness)
Verbs of thinking (think, know, believe, realize, remember, forget, understand, mean)
Verbs of the sense (see, notice, recognize, hear, smell)
Verbs of emotion (like, dislike, wish, want, desire, love, hate, refuse, forgive..)
Some verbs for examples (Own, possess, belong, keep, seem, contain, matter)
Past Continuous Tense
• Affirmative
• Was
• Were + verb + ing

• They were watching T.V last night.


• They were winning the match while I was leaving the town.
• When it was raining I finished the project.
Past Continuous Tense
Negative:

• We were not watching T.V last night.


• They were not winning the match while I was leaving the town.
Past Continuous Tense

Yes/No Questions:
• Were you watching TV last night?
• Was she playing the guitar yesterday morning?
• Was it crying last month?
Past Continuous Tense
WH Questions:
• What were they watching last night?
• When were They winning the match?
• What was happening when you finished the project?
Past Continuous Tense
Passive form:
-The school was being built last year.
• Rule:
(Was-were) + being + P.P
Key words of the Past Continuous
• Yesterday
• Last
• ago
Question with Tags
• What do we mean by question with tags?
It consists of two parts: the first is a statement, and the second has the form of question. If the
statement is affirmative the question must be negative and vice versa. In all cases the answer
has to agree with the statement.

• They were waiting, weren’t they?


• Yes, they were.
• She was not studying her homework, was she?
• No, she wasn’t.
