Course Outline - MT 102 (Spring 2024)
This course is elementary introduction to Ordinary Differential Equations which is an important area of Applied
Mathematics. The emphasis of the course will be on deriving and solving ODEs occurring frequently in science
and engineering applications. Students will learn to model a given problem in terms of unknown function and its
derivatives, thus leading to a differential equation or a system of differential equations and then solve this equation
or system to find unknown relationship(s) between variables. The solutions will be analyzed to understand the
nature of dependencies and gain insights into particular situations. Parallel to ODEs the course will provide
sufficient knowledge of Linear Algebra necessary to solve systems of equations. The students will also be
introduced to the theory of Matrices and Determinants as well as Eigenvectors and Eigenvalues and their use in
solution of linear algebraic systems and ODEs. On completion of this course, the students will be trained enough
to appreciate the power of differential equations and apply this knowledge to analyze problems in their areas.
