UNIFIED LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET
General Chemistry 1, Grade 11 Quarter 1, Week 3B
Name: Grade/Sec:
Learning Objectives:
1. Identify the symbols and descriptions used in chemical equations;
2. Write chemical equations;
3. Balance chemical equations by inspection;
Key Concepts:
Chemical Equation

A balanced chemical equation obeys the Law of Conservation of Mass, the total mass of
reactants must equal to the total mass of the products. A balanced equation has the same
number and type of atoms on both sides of the equation. An equation is balanced by introducing
coefficients. Coefficients are whole numbers are written in front of the symbols or formulas.
For example, two moles of Sodium sulfate (2 Na2SO4) indicates the presence of four atoms of
Sodium (Na), two atoms of Sulfur (S) and eight atoms of Oxygen (O).
Na = 2 x 2 = 4 atoms of sodium
S = 2 x 1 = 2 atoms of sulfur
O = 2 x 4 = 8 atoms of oxygen
1. If the reaction is given in word equation, convert the reaction into formula equation.
2. Count the number of atoms of each element in the reactant and the product sides.

3. If the number of atoms of each element on both sides are not equal, balance them by
placing a coefficient that will make the numbers equal. The process is called trial and
error. Start from the lower number then proceed to higher number if the equation is
not balance. The coefficient should be placed before the formula or symbol.
Example:
Sample Problems
Reactants Products
Ca = 1 Ca = 1
H = 1 H = 2
Cl = 1 Cl = 2
Since, the equation is not balance and by inspection, place coefficient 2 before HCl to balance
the equation.
Reactants Products
Ca = 1 Ca = 1
H= 2 H = 2
Cl = 2 Cl = 2
Reactants Products
Ag = 1 Ag = 2
O = 2 O =1
3
Place coefficient 2 before Ag2O to balance the O.
Ag(s) + O2(g) 2 Ag2O(s) (not balanced)
Ag = 1 Ag = 4
O =2 O=2
Ag = 4 Ag = 4
O =2 O =2
Learning Objective:
Identify the symbols and descriptions used in chemical equations.
What you need: Activity sheet, answer sheet, pen, and periodic table
What to do: Identify the symbols below by writing its description.
1. 6.
2. 7.
3. (s) 8. (l)
4. (aq) 9. (g)
5. 10. +
Learning Objective:
Write chemical equation.
What you need: Activity sheet, answer sheet, pen, and periodic table
What to do: The following are word equations, write and transform them into chemical equation.
The first one is done for you. Note: No need to balance the equation.

3. Octane reacts with oxygen to form carbon dioxide and water.
4. Zinc metal is added to hydrochloric acid yield zinc chloride and hydrogen gas.
5. Sodium hydroxide combined with hydrochloric acid produced sodium chloride and water.
Activity 3. Balance Me
Learning Objectives:
1. Identify the chemical equations as to balanced or not.
2. Balance chemical equations.
What you need: Activity sheet, answer sheet, and pen
Part A. Identify the chemical equations below as to balanced or not balanced. Number one is
done for you.
2. CH4 + O2 CO2 + H 2O
3. 2 KNO3 2 KNO2 + O2
4. Mg + O2 MgO
5. 2 PbO2 2 PbO + O2
Part B.
Below are chemical equations, by inspection fill in the missing coefficient on the blank
and check the number of atoms on each element on both sides to balance the equation.

Photosynthesis is defined as the chemical process, wherein carbon dioxide in the presence
of water and radiant energy gets converted to glucose (chemical energy), giving out oxygen as
byproducts. In the equation, the combining reactants and resulting products are expressed
along with their respective numbers of molecules.
Putting this in a simplified formula, the following equation represents this process.
Considering this equation, how plant lovers (plantitos and plantitas) able to cultivate their
plants?
