ASSIGNMENT QUESTION:
Water shortage is not merely an environmental concern. It is a global crisis that affects millions of
people every day. As the demand for water increasingly exceeds available supply, the consequences
ripple across communities of all sizes, from remote villages to megacities. This crisis arises when
demand surpasses the available resources, or when poor water quality restricts its use. Water
shortage manifests in two key forms: physical scarcity, where the amount of water is insufficient to
meet the needs of a population, and economic scarcity, where inadequate infrastructure or investment
prevents access to clean water, even when resources are available. In rural areas of Sarawak, this
issue is alarming, with unprecedented disruptions in the water supply and difficulties in accessing
clean and safe drinking water. While both Federal and Sarawak State Governments provide financial
aid for rural central water systems, rural needs are greater than the funds available. Sarawak's current
water supply coverage stands at 85%, with rural areas falling behind at 70.5%. This is due to the
intensive use and competition, lack of developed water supply facilities, financial difficulties, and water
shortage. While river water is the primary source of supply in rural areas, Sarawak receives an
average annual precipitation of 3,300 millimeters, which could be effectively harnessed for both
domestic and agricultural use. Additionally, efforts have been made to enhance access to
groundwater, which could serve rural communities more effectively. However, the quality of the
groundwater must meet Malaysia’s National Water Quality Standards, as there are concerns over
contamination from septic tanks, untreated wastewater, and agricultural runoff. Therefore, addressing
water shortage in the rural areas of Sarawak requires a holistic approach to water resources and
wastewater management, aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This includes
understanding the availability of water sources, anticipating future challenges, and adopting
sustainable solutions to ensure that local communities have access to safe and clean water in the
long term.
