INTRODUCTION
Tratak, also known as Trataka, is a powerful yogic practice that involves
focused gazing. Rooted in ancient Hatha Yoga, Tratak is designed to
train and purify the eyes, enhance concentration, and develop deep inner
awareness. The word "Tratak" literally means "to gaze" or "to look," and
the practice primarily involves fixing one's gaze on a single point, such
as a candle flame, a dot on the wall, or a specific object.

Tratak is considered one of the six Shatkarmas (cleansing techniques) in


yoga. It is known for its ability to improve ocular health by
strengthening the eye muscles and clearing any residual tension. Besides
its physical benefits, Tratak has profound effects on the mind. Regular
practice can lead to enhanced mental clarity, improved focus, and a
heightened sense of intuition. It can also help in diminishing mental

TYPES
Tratak, or Trataka, can be practiced in various forms, each serving
different purposes. Here are some common types of Tratak:
1. External Tratak
Candle Flame Tratak: The most popular form, where the practitioner
gazes at a candle flame placed at eye level. This form helps in improving
concentration and clearing the mind of distractions.
Point Tratak: Focusing on a small dot or point drawn on the wall. This
helps in developing mental focus and stability.
Yantra Tratak: Gazing at specific symbols or mandalas, often used for
meditative purposes and to stimulate the mind.
Moon Tratak: Focusing on the moon, especially beneficial during full
moon phases. This helps in calming the mind and enhancing mental
clarity.
Star Tratak: Gazing at a star in the night sky, which aids in deepening
concentration and inner awareness.
2.Internal Tratak
Shiva Tratak: Focusing on the third eye (Ajna chakra) with closed

3.Breathing Tratak
Breath Awareness Tratak: Directing one’s focus towards the breath,

4.Mirror Tratak
Eye Tratak: Gazing at one's own reflection, particularly into one's eyes,
in a mirror. This helps in self-awareness and introspection.

PROCEDURE
Certainly! Here’s a detailed step-by-step procedure for practicing
Tratak:
Candle Tratak
Choose Your Object: Traditionally, a candle flame is used for Tratak.
Place a lit candle at eye level, about 3-4 feet away from you, so that the
flame is steady and unwavering.
Sit in a Comfortable Position: Sit in a comfortable meditative posture,
such as Padmasana (Lotus Pose) or Sukhasana (Easy Pose). Ensure your
back is straight and your body is relaxed.
Prepare Your Mind: Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths to
center yourself. Allow your mind to settle and let go of any distractions.
Begin Gazing: Open your eyes and gently focus your gaze on the flame
of the candle. Try to avoid blinking and maintain a steady gaze. Keep
your attention solely on the flame.
Concentrate: As you gaze at the flame, be aware of your breath but do
not force it. If your eyes start to water, gently close them and remain
focused on the afterimage of the flame that appears in your mind’s eye.
Observe the Afterimage: With your eyes closed, visualize the
afterimage of the flame in your mind. Try to keep this image steady and
clear. This helps in developing concentration and mental focus.
Repeat: Open your eyes and repeat the gazing process. Do this for a few
minutes initially and gradually increase the duration as you become
more comfortable with the practice.
End the Session: Conclude the session by closing your eyes, taking a
few deep breaths, and gently rubbing your palms together to generate
heat. Place your warm palms over your closed eyes to relax them before
opening them slowly.

avoid Trataka.

4.Calm environment: Perform Trataka in a dark, quiet, and calm place
to prevent distractions.
5.Eye care: Blink whenever you feel discomfort during the practice. Do
