Assessment of Team-Based Healthcare Principles in Current Practice Team

Assessment of Team-Based Healthcare Principles in Current Practice Team

Introduction

To be an effective team, it is very much required to have teamwork. Healthcare is an

area where team-based care or principles of the team-based care such as common goal, clear

role and responsibilities, effective communication, mutual respect are very much important

for better quality of patient outcome. The paper assesses the possibilities of team-based

principles in my current practice team. Moreover, the evaluation is made supported by a

framework of Armstrong and Sables-Baus (2022) as a model, the table 8.1. It checks the

presence and/or absence of team principles in terms of the worked up practice team.

Shared Goals

Presence of Shared Goals

Well, in my practice team, it is pretty much professional and have a clear set of goals

that we practice in our team. The compatibility of goals between all of the team members is

as important as we work together for better performance and team work. We discuss and set

the goals of the patient outcome in the team meetings. It helps that we are in good health and

can promote the overall health of the patient.

Gaps in Goal Alignment

However, there are various members in the team who are new and part timers do not

possess the knowledge and may not be aware of understanding the common goals of the

team, which is a significant gap or inconsistency in establishing new goals or outcomes. This

gap has set goals differently in different members, which somehow creates misunderstanding

and provides different care of treatment to patients.

Each member of the team is aware of their role in the care of the patient, to prevent

any overlap, which will affect the work and cause misunderstanding among the staff. Nurses

focus on monitoring and helping the patient, where the doctor focuses on the diagnosis and

the treatment plan, along with that each other’s role keeps the team under control and help

each member work efficiently.

Clear Roles and Responsibilities

Presence of Defined Roles

A distinguishing characteristic of every team member is that each of them understands

the tasks that he or she is expected to accomplish in detail, which helps to prevent

overlapping of tasks and contributes to the optimally proper functioning of the cooperation.

Nurses are more concerned with assessing and caring for the patient and the doctors are

concerned with the medical evaluation and management of the same patient. such roles create

insolence and reduce incidences of misunderstandings in an organization.

Absence of Role Flexibility

But, where there is a need to change some roles, there is hardly any provision for such

a swap in this respect. According to Stucky, Wymer, and House (2022), flexibility in positions

is beneficial for team advancement and particularly so in volatile healthcare environments.

There is sometimes a lack of flexibility in the organizational relationships within the team

and bear heavy inconvenience when the patients’ flow rate up or the staff is insufficient.

Effective Communication

Structured Communication Tools Used

The team uses communication prompting tools, like, SBAR, to transfer critical patient

information during shifting. The usage of SBAR and other structured communication tools

improves the communication between the staff and reduces miscommunication. Usage of this

tool also helps in fast communication during emergency events where the staff is aware of

what is happening with the patient, and what their needs are.

No Open Feedback within the Team

The team has few open feedback channels and few of the feedback channels are not

open or not present. There is a clear hierarchy in the team that restricts the team members

from providing feedback, and specific members will not be able to contribute to the feedback.

Limited feedback from the team may affect the patient care of the Team

Respectful Interactions Among Team Members

The team members are respectful to each other and particularly in their day to day

interactions. Higher leaderships of the team respect those under them and not bossy or

autocratic, and teamwork is practiced better when everyone is treated equally.

Lack of Consistency in Mutual Respect

However, sometimes, we cannot find a consistent mutual respect among the members

within the team. In many high-stress situations working together, people sometimes fail to

communicate effectively to show mutual respect. Maintaining respect in the most difficult of

situations is also important for effective HealthCare. According to Armstrong and Sables-

Baum (2022), the practice team can implement stress management strategies to be respectful

during challenging health care methods and treatments.

Conclusion

Assessment of Team-Based Healthcare Principles in Current Practice Team

In conclusion, my practice team demonstrates some of the important principles of

effective care using a team such as having a shared objective, having a clear cut role,

structured way of communicating and mutual respect; there are still improvements that need

to be made. This is because, during the training of my junior residents and student clerks, we

could not demonstrate our set goals and the role of being flexible. At times, we failed to show

a mutual respect for one another. This could reduce the quality of healthcare provided to the

people by the team that would decrease their faith and hope in us.
