Aptitude Preparation Guide

1. Percentages

Concept Overview:

Percentages are used to express numbers as a fraction of 100. They are commonly applied in profit

and loss, discounts, and data interpretation.

Questions and Solutions:

1. A number increases by 20% and then decreases by 10%. What is the net change?

Solution: Let the original number be 100. After a 20% increase, it becomes 120. After a 10%

decrease, it becomes 120 - (10% of 120) = 120 - 12 = 108. Net change = 108 - 100 = 8. Answer:

8% increase.

2. If 60% of a number is 120, what is the number?

Solution: Let the number be x. Then, 60% of x = 120. So, (60/100) * x = 120 -> x = 120 *

(100/60) = 200. Answer: 200.

3. A student scores 75% in an exam with a total of 200 marks. What is the score?

Solution: Score = (75/100) * 200 = 150. Answer: 150.

4. A shopkeeper gives a discount of 20% on an item marked at Rs. 500. What is the selling price?

Solution: Discount = (20/100) * 500 = 100. Selling price = 500 - 100 = Rs. 400. Answer: Rs. 400.

5. A population of 10,000 increases by 5% annually. What will be the population after 2 years?

Solution: After 1 year: 10,000 + (5% of 10,000) = 10,500. After 2 years: 10,500 + (5% of 10,500)

= 11,025. Answer: 11,025.

2. Ratios and Proportions

Concept Overview:

Ratios represent the relative sizes of two quantities. Proportions state that two ratios are equal.

Questions and Solutions:

1. The ratio of boys to girls in a class is 3:2. If there are 60 boys, how many girls are there?

Solution: Let the number of girls be x. Then, 3/2 = 60/x -> x = (60 * 2) / 3 = 40. Answer: 40.

2. A sum of Rs. 1200 is divided among A, B, and C in the ratio 2:3:5. How much does C get?

Solution: Total parts = 2+3+5 = 10. C's share = (5/10) * 1200 = Rs. 600. Answer: Rs. 600.

3. Two numbers are in the ratio 4:5. Their sum is 81. Find the numbers.

Solution: Let the numbers be 4x and 5x. Then, 4x + 5x = 81 -> 9x = 81 -> x = 9. Numbers are 36

and 45. Answer: 36, 45.

4. If a/b = 2/3 and b/c = 4/5, find a:c.

Solution: a/b * b/c = 2/3 * 4/5 = 8/15. Answer: 8:15.

5. The incomes of A and B are in the ratio 5:4, and their expenditures are in the ratio 3:2. If A saves

Rs. 2000 and B saves Rs. 1600, find their incomes.

Solution: Let incomes be 5x and 4x, and expenditures be 3y and 2y. Savings: 5x - 3y = 2000, 4x

- 2y = 1600. Solve to get x = 2000. Incomes: 5x = Rs. 10,000, 4x = Rs. 8,000. Answer: Rs. 10,000

and Rs. 8,000.
