TION B OPTION C

After exploring several design alternatives, this is the final layout for Unilab. The re-
ception and waiting area are directly accessible from the staircase, while the lab
is accessed from the terrace outside. The microbiology lab and autoclave space
are positioned side by side. To achieve the most efficient layout, I carefully con-
sidered the client’s request for a simple and cost-effective design. I made use of
the existing slabs and sinks, incorporating them into the new design without al-
terations, which helped preserve resources and reduce costs. Additionally, I was
responsible for creating the 3D interior design and false ceiling layout, ensuring
that both the visual appeal and functionality aligned with the project’s objectives.

Project type : Commercial

Location :Ekantakuna, Lalitpur
Requirement : Commercial Building for IVF & Rental
Status : Conceptual

The project involved designing an IVF clinic aimed at establishing a leading fertili-
ty center. IVF, or In Vitro Fertilization, is a specialized treatment involving the han-
dling of eggs, embryos, and sperm to assist with fertility. The clinic’s focus was
on providing the most effective fertility treatments. This is a commercial build-
ing, and the client’s requirements included creating a comprehensive IVF cen-
ter with a clinic, laboratory, and administrative services. Additionally, the design
needed to accommodate rental facilities on the other floors of the building.

FIG: Factors Guiding the Form Of The Building

The images highlight various factors that influenced the building’s form. The wind direction
played a key role in determining the building’s facade design to optimize natural ventilation
and reduce wind pressure. The presence of a “counter wind” from the north suggests a strate-
gy to create a “stack effect.” This counter wind would assist in drawing fresh air into the build-
ing while expelling stale air, enhancing the overall airflow and ventilation within the space.

Concept

The concept for this hospital is inspired by the symbol-

ism of a temple, representing hope, healing, and spiritual
well-being. The design incorporates an open space similar
to the mandapa, which fosters a sense of openness and
calm, while the enclosed spaces, akin to the garbha griha,
provide a private and healing environment for patients

FIG: Concept sketches by Ar.

Ranjit Puri sir

FIG: Division of floors

The hospital is organized into three distinct sections: public, semi-public, and private spac-
es. The basement level is designated as a public area, accessible to everyone, providing
a welcoming space for all visitors. The semi-public spaces are intended for patients, of-
fering areas for checkups, surgeries, and other medical services. he private spaces, re-
served exclusively for staff, are dedicated to the operational needs of the IVF clinic, en-
suring that administrative and clinical functions are carried out efficiently and securely.
27
Division of Floors through Illustration

Rental spaces The building floors are categorized into three dis-
tinct sections. The top four floors are designated
IVF building for rental purposes, with separate staircases and
lifts providing access to these levels. The IVF-re-

vices, are separate from the rental floors and are
accessible via a different set of stairs and lifts.

Circulation pattern inside the Building

FIG: Vehicular & Pedestrain Circulation inside Building

Vehicular access to the building is provided from the south side, with the basement des-
ignated for car parking and the semi-basement allocated for bike parking. Pedestrian ac-
cess is from the west side, where a staircase and a ramp provide convenient entry to
both the semi-basement and the ground floor. This layout ensures smooth circulation
for both vehicles and pedestrians, offering easy access to the building’s various levels.

The building is designed

with an atrium that ex-
tends from the semi-base-
ment to the IVF floors,
reflecting the concept of
mandapa. This design cre-
ates a sense of openness
and connectivity, allowing
for natural light and air to
flow through the space.

FIG: Circulation inside Building

The semi-basement serves as the reception area for the IVF clinic, featuring waiting areas,
a coffee shop, and a pharmacy, creating a welcoming environment for patients and visi-
tors. A centrally located staircase provides access to the upper floors, ensuring smooth cir-
culation throughout the building and connecting the various spaces in a cohesive manner.

29
BUILDING SCIENCE

FIG: SECTION SHOWING AIR FLOW THROUGH STACK VENTILATION

The building employs the stack ventilation method, where warm air naturally ris-
es toward higher openings in the front facade and escapes. At the same time, cool-
er, denser air flows in through the entrance and into the open atrium, replacing the
warm air. This process creates a continuous and efficient airflow throughout the
building, enhancing ventilation and maintaining a comfortable indoor environment
30
INTERNSHIP 2024 I SHRUTI SHRESTHA

Double skin Facade

The building incorporates a double-skin fa-

cade, consisting of two layers of glass sepa-
rated by an air corridor. The primary glass lay-
er serves as an insulator, while the air space
between the two layers provides additional
insulation against temperature fluctuations,
wind, and noise. This innovative design reduc-
es the cooling load by approximately 20%, con-
tributing to greater energy efficiency and en-
hanced thermal comfort within the building.

FIG: SECTION SHOWING DOUBLE SKIN FACADE

Approximate Heat load calculation

The approximate heat load for the IVF portion

of the building is calculated by considering
the heat generated by occupants and machin-
ery. With 150 employees and 350 visitors, the
total number of occupants is 500, each con-
tributing 600 BTU. The machinery adds a to-
tal equipment load of approximately 102 kW.

Using the formula:

HEAT = (Total no. of people × Heat load per

person) + (Total equipment Watts × 3.4)
FIG: SECTION SHOWING HEAT GAIN BY HEAT = (500 × 600) + (102,000 × 3.4)
THE BUILDING
HEAT = 646,800 BTU
This total heat load provides a basis for designing the building’s cooling and ventilation sys-
tems to ensure thermal comfort and efficiency.

31
DESIGN FEATURES

The building incorporates several innovative

design features aimed at enhancing energy ef-
ficiency and sustainability. One of the key ele-
ments is the use of photovoltaic (PV) panels,
which generate 20% of the building’s energy re-
quirements through solar power, reducing reli-
ance on conventional energy sources and min-
noise but also helps in reducing the cooling load

The building design thoughtfully integrates light-

well tubes positioned along the staircase at the en-
trance, serving as an innovative solution to enhance
natural lighting in the basement levels. These lightwell
tubes capture daylight from the exterior and chan-
nel it downwards, effectively illuminating the base-
ment spaces without relying solely on artificial lighting.

PROJECT LEARNINGS

Understanding how to incorporate ad-

vanced features like double-skin facades,
PV panels, and lightwell tubes highlighted
the importance of integrating sustainabili-
ty and energy efficiency into building designs.

The efficient use of space, such as allocating specific

lifts for different users and incorporating car lifts to
save space, demonstrated the significance of plan-
ning for both functionality and user convenience.

Categorizing areas into public, semi-pub-

lic, and private zones taught the importance
of ensuring smooth circulation and main-
taining privacy in a multi-functional building.

Designing with practical considerations like ve-

The next project I was assigned was to create a 3D interior design for a 3BHK apartment in
Westar Apartments, located in Balkumari, Lalitpur. I was provided with the apartment’s
plan and a conceptual mood board, which guided the furniture design and spatial lay-

The apartment features an open-plan living and dining area that promotes a sense of spacious-
ness and connectivity. The kitchen includes a balcony, though its natural light is limited due to
obstruction from an adjacent apartment block. The layout also comprises two bedrooms that
share a common bathroom, along with a master bedroom that includes a small, enclosed balcony.

51
SITE MEASUREMENT

As part of the measurement veri-

fication process, we were sent to
the site to take measurements of
the master bedroom, its attached
bathroom, and the balcony. This
included both horizontal and ver-
tical dimensions, as well as verify-
ing the levels to ensure accuracy in
the design and execution phases.

The redesigned interior of the apartment incorporates thoughtful changes to optimize

functionality and space utilization. In the master bedroom, the balcony has been convert-
ed into a dedicated closet space, and an exhaust fan has been installed in the attached
bathroom to enhance ventilation. Among the other two bedrooms, one has been trans-
formed into a guest bedroom, complete with a study table and a closet, while the oth-
er has been redesigned as a kids’ bedroom featuring a two-story bed and a study area.

PROJECT LEARNINGS

This interior design project provided valu-

able learning opportunities, particularly in
creating smart and multifunctional spaces
that maximize utility without compromising
aesthetics. I gained insight into the effective
use of various materials and their applications
in different settings, as well as the selection
and placement of lighting fixtures to enhance
the ambiance and functionality of the space.

Additionally, the project underscored the

importance of precision in furniture detail-
ing, as even minor errors in design details
can lead to significant issues in the final
outcome. This experience highlighted the
need for meticulous planning and attention
to detail in every aspect of interior design.

SITE MEASUREMENT

We began the project by taking the crucial step of visiting the site to ensure that the di-
mensions aligned accurately with those specified in the “Laal Purja” (land ownership cer-
tificate). This on-site visit allowed us to verify the measurements firsthand, ensuring that
the project would be developed in strict accordance with the documented land bound-
aries and specifications. This verification was an essential part of the process, helping to
avoid any potential discrepancies or issues later on in the design and construction phases.

The client’s requirements for the residence include utilizing the ground floor for rental
purposes, while reserving the upper two and a half floors for their personal use. Access to
the first floor will be provided via an outdoor staircase, with an internal staircase extend-
ing from the first floor for terrace access. For the rental unit, the client requested a 2BHK
flat. For their own living space, they specified a 4BHK layout, which will include a master-
bedroom, a puja room, and a storage room. This arrangement balances the need for rental
income with a comfortable, private residence.

The concept development for the project

INITIAL PLANNING AND MOODBOARD

E SITE

For the client meeting, I was tasked with creating a conceptual mood board based on the initial plan-
ning. This mood board was designed to visually represent the design direction, materials, colors, and
overall aesthetic, helping the client to better understand the envisioned look and feel of the project.

GROUND FLOOR PLAN

Outdoor Stairs

For the external stairs leading to the owner’s space, the design concept focused on
a minimalist floating concrete staircase, complemented by a simple handrail. This de-
sign approach aimed to create a sleek, modern look while maintaining functional-
ity and visual lightness, seamlessly integrating into the overall aesthetic of the building.

Kitchen & Dining

For the owner’s kitchen and dining area, the design concept featured an open plan lay-
out with a rustic style. This approach aimed to create a warm inviting atmosphere The open
plan allows for fluid interaction between spaces while maintaining a cozy, homely fee.

Living Room & Staircase

For the living room TV unit, the wall of the stairs was strategically utilized to cre-
ate a seamless and integrated design. By incorporating the staircase void, a small
atrium was formed, adding a sense of openness and connectivity to the space.

Project Type : Interior

Location : Gotthatar, Kathmandu
Client : Mr. Robin Shrestha
Status : Ongoing

This interior project, located in Gotthatar, Kathmandu, involved designing a func-

tional and compact kitchen on the terrace as per the client’s requirements. The cli-
ent specifically requested a kitchen space for preparing non-vegetarian dishes and
a small adjoining outdoor dining area for enjoying meals. For this project, my re-
sponsibility was to develop a 3D model based on the simple plan provided, incor-
porating the efficient use of the limited terrace space. I also worked on designing
the kitchen layout, ensuring it was practical and aligned with the client’s needs.

07. Lekali Dog chew Warehouse

Project Type : Renovation

Location : Budhanilkantha, Kathmandu
Client : Mrs. Latika Goyal
Status : Ongoing

Lekali Dog Chew is a warehouse situated in Budanilkantha, Kathmandu, dedicated

to the production of high-quality dog chews crafted from premium milk. The ware-
house is systematically organized to accommodate the various stages of the produc-
tion process, ensuring efficiency and maintaining the superior quality of the prod-
ucts. Each space within the warehouse is designed to serve a specific function, of
unloading area, wash and cleaning space, cutting, buffing and storage area operations.

PROJECT LEARNINGS My Involvement

Taking precise measurements on-site Site Measurement

is crucial for ensuring that the drafted
Existing Site Draft
plans align perfectly with the existing
conditions. I learned the importance of New Planning and Circulation
following a systematic method, start-
ing from a fixed reference point and
moving logically through the site to
avoid missing any dimensions or details.

86
INTERNSHIP 2024 I SHRUTI SHRESTHA

For this project, we conducted a site visit to the Lekali ware-

house to take measurements in preparation for its renova-
tion. Measuring each space within the warehouse posed
significant challenges due to the presence of various equip-
ment, storage trolleys, crates, and carton boxes, which ob-
structed access and made it difficult to obtain precise dimen-
sions. Despite these hurdles, meticulous effort was made to
document all necessary measurements accurately, ensur-
ing that the renovation plans could be executed effectively

87
EXISTING SITE PLAN

The existing planning of the warehouse was not effectively aligned with the step-
by-step process required for the production of dog chews. The layout lacked prop-
er zoning, with no clear distinction between the office space and the process-
ing areas. Several rooms were not planned efficiently, leading to congestion in
spaces that required larger areas, such as the sorting, buffing, and torching zones.
88
INTERNSHIP 2024 I SHRUTI SHRESTHA

PROPOSED PLANNING

In the new planning for the warehouse, the office space and production areas are clearly dis-
tinguished to streamline the workflow. The products are first unloaded in the store outside
the parking area, then transported to the washing area. From there, they move to the adja-
cent drying area. Every other room is strategically planned according to the step-by-step pro-
duction process, ensuring a logical and efficient flow. The final stages include the pre-ship-
ping area, where the products are prepared for dispatch, before being sent to the shops.

FOR GEO-TECH INSPECTION

The Jawlakhel IVF project has recently commenced, and as part of the initial stages, soil test-
ing was a priority. To facilitate this, we visited the site to identify suitable locations for con-
ducting the soil tests. After a thorough assessment, we selected four distinct points across
different areas of the site for testing. However, the presence of an existing building on the
site posed some challenges, particularly in accessing one of the designated locations. This
required careful planning and adjustments to ensure that the soil testing could be carried out
effectively without compromising the integrity of the existing structure.

ground level, 4-6m medium dense greyish sand with silt, then silty clay of medium plasticity
up to 20m. Since this location does not fall under the area where the building structure will
be situated, it was decided to conduct soil testing at a Point 2 location to obtain more rele-
