Architectural Internship Report
2024
KATHMANDU UNIVERSITY
Abstract
The internship period, as defined by the curriculum of Kathmandu University, is a crucial phase
where architecture students gain hands-on experience by working as trainees in professional
architecture firms registered and led by certified practitioners. This phase plays a significant
role in architectural education, offering students a chance to go beyond classroom learning
and studio work to engage in practical, real-world applications. It is a structured program
that bridges theoretical concepts with practical execution under professional supervision.
In the B.Arch V/I semester, the internship aims to equip students for their thesis while
providing valuable insights into the real-world architectural profession and practices.
For my internship, I joined Trikaru Design Studio in Sankhamul, Lalitpur, for a total duration
of 90 days. This report encapsulates my experiences as a trainee, elaborating on the firm’s
operational methodologies and core principles. It provides a comprehensive overview of my
involvement in various projects and serves as a reflective summary of the knowledge and

The existing layout of the top floor includes a terrace, a large open space intended
for the lab, a canteen, kitchen, and a washroom. After some initial planning, the client
provided more specific requirements for the lab, which included a reception area, a
main laboratory, a microbiology lab, an autoclave room for sterilizing medical devices,
a changing room, and a waiting area for patients. To accommodate these needs, the
kitchen and canteen spaces were repurposed as part of the lab area for the renovation.

TION B OPTION C
After exploring several design alternatives, this is the final layout for Unilab. The re-
ception and waiting area are directly accessible from the staircase, while the lab
is accessed from the terrace outside. The microbiology lab and autoclave space
are positioned side by side. To achieve the most efficient layout, I carefully con-
sidered the client’s request for a simple and cost-effective design. I made use of
the existing slabs and sinks, incorporating them into the new design without al-
terations, which helped preserve resources and reduce costs. Additionally, I was
responsible for creating the 3D interior design and false ceiling layout, ensuring
that both the visual appeal and functionality aligned with the project’s objectives.
17
3D Interior Visualization
The reception area of the Unilab is designed to be both functional and welcoming, in-
corporating a dedicated space for blood sample collection from patients. This space
is strategically positioned within the reception area to ensure smooth and efficient
workflow, allowing for easy patient access while maintaining privacy and comfort
The furniture in this space is designed with a sleek, modern aesthetic, eliminat-
ing the need for traditional handles. Instead, slanted grooves are integrated into
the top or bottom edges of the panels. These grooves, with a carefully measured
2-inch gap, provide an ergonomic and comfortable grip, allowing users to easily pull
or open the panels. This design enhances both the functionality and visual appeal
of the space, offering a clean and contemporary look while maintaining ease of use.

PROJECT LEARNINGS
This project taught me several valuable lessons. First, efficient space planning was key to
streamline workflow. I also learned the importance of adapting designs based onclient
3D models highlighted the benefits of virtual visualization in resolving design issues
like incorporating slanted grooves for ease of use. Lastly, using existing resources, such as

optimizing the available area, such as integrating the blood sample collection area into the reception to
feedback, refining layouts to meet specific needs like the microbiology lab and autoclave room. Creating
and ensuring cohesion. The furniture design focused on blending modern aesthetics with functionality,
slabs and sinks, helped reduce costs and environmental impact, showcasing sustainable design practices.

Jawlakhel IVF
The project involved designing an IVF clinic aimed at establishing a leading fertili-
ty center. IVF, or In Vitro Fertilization, is a specialized treatment involving the han-
dling of eggs, embryos, and sperm to assist with fertility. The clinic’s focus was
on providing the most effective fertility treatments. This is a commercial build-
ing, and the client’s requirements included creating a comprehensive IVF cen-
ter with a clinic, laboratory, and administrative services. Additionally, the design
needed to accommodate rental facilities on the other floors of the building.

Site Analysis
The images highlight various factors that influenced the building’s form. The wind direction
played a key role in determining the building’s facade design to optimize natural ventilation
and reduce wind pressure. The presence of a “counter wind” from the north suggests a strate-
gy to create a “stack effect.” This counter wind would assist in drawing fresh air into the build-
ing while expelling stale air, enhancing the overall airflow and ventilation within the space.
26
INTERNSHIP 2024 I SHRUTI SHRESTHA
Concept
The hospital is organized into three distinct sections: public, semi-public, and private spac-
es. The basement level is designated as a public area, accessible to everyone, providing
a welcoming space for all visitors. The semi-public spaces are intended for patients, of-
fering areas for checkups, surgeries, and other medical services. he private spaces, re-
served exclusively for staff, are dedicated to the operational needs of the IVF clinic, en-
suring that administrative and clinical functions are carried out efficiently and securely.
27
Division of Floors through Illustration
Rental spaces The building floors are categorized into three dis-
tinct sections. The top four floors are designated
IVF building for rental purposes, with separate staircases and
lifts providing access to these levels. The IVF-re-
Basement Floor lated floors, which are dedicated to medical ser-
vices, are separate from the rental floors and are
accessible via a different set of stairs and lifts.
Staircase for IVF Center
These stairs and lifts serve only the IVF floors, en-
Staircase for all floor suring that the movement within the clinic is re-
connection stricted to patients, staff, and medical services.
28
INTERNSHIP 2024 I SHRUTI SHRESTHA
Vehicular access to the building is provided from the south side, with the basement des-
ignated for car parking and the semi-basement allocated for bike parking. Pedestrian ac-
cess is from the west side, where a staircase and a ramp provide convenient entry to
both the semi-basement and the ground floor. This layout ensures smooth circulation
for both vehicles and pedestrians, offering easy access to the building’s various levels.
The semi-basement serves as the reception area for the IVF clinic, featuring waiting areas,
a coffee shop, and a pharmacy, creating a welcoming environment for patients and visi-
tors. A centrally located staircase provides access to the upper floors, ensuring smooth cir-
culation throughout the building and connecting the various spaces in a cohesive manner.
29
BUILDING SCIENCE
The building employs the stack ventilation method, where warm air naturally ris-
es toward higher openings in the front facade and escapes. At the same time, cool-
er, denser air flows in through the entrance and into the open atrium, replacing the
warm air. This process creates a continuous and efficient airflow throughout the
building, enhancing ventilation and maintaining a comfortable indoor environment

The rammed earth walls in the residential project will be reinforced to ensure structural
integrity and durability. To achieve this, 12mm rebar will be strategically embedded within
the walls, providing essential tensile strength and enhancing the overall stability of the
structure. Additionally, 25mm Geotech mesh will be incorporated at both the sill and lintel
levels. This mesh reinforcement will help distribute loads more evenly and prevent cracking
or shifting, further strengthening the walls and ensuring their long-term performance.

Nakhipot Residence
This is the residential project in Nakhipot, Lalitpur. For the residence in Nakhipot, I was
tasked with the planning of the entire site, which spans a total area of 3766.82 square
feet. The plot faces west and is bordered by a 20-foot-wide road, with existing buildings
surrounding it on three sides. The client’s requirement was to incorpo-
rate both residetial and commercial spaces within the available area.
66
INTERNSHIP 2024 I SHRUTI SHRESTHA
SITE MEASUREMENT
We began the project by taking the crucial step of visiting the site to ensure that the di-
mensions aligned accurately with those specified in the “Laal Purja” (land ownership cer-
tificate). This on-site visit allowed us to verify the measurements firsthand, ensuring that
the project would be developed in strict accordance with the documented land bound-
aries and specifications. This verification was an essential part of the process, helping to
avoid any potential discrepancies or issues later on in the design and construction phases.

CONCEPT
The client’s requirements for the residence include utilizing the ground floor for rental
purposes, while reserving the upper two and a half floors for their personal use. Access to
the first floor will be provided via an outdoor staircase, with an internal staircase extend-
ing from the first floor for terrace access. For the rental unit, the client requested a 2BHK
flat. For their own living space, they specified a 4BHK layout, which will include a master-
bedroom, a puja room, and a storage room. This arrangement balances the need for rental
income with a comfortable, private residence.
69
INITIAL PLANNING AND MOODBOARD
E SITE
For the client meeting, I was tasked with creating a conceptual mood board based on the initial plan-
ning. This mood board was designed to visually represent the design direction, materials, colors, and
overall aesthetic, helping the client to better understand the envisioned look and feel of the project.
For the external stairs leading to the owner’s space, the design concept focused on
a minimalist floating concrete staircase, complemented by a simple handrail. This de-
sign approach aimed to create a sleek, modern look while maintaining functional-
ity and visual lightness, seamlessly integrating into the overall aesthetic of the building.
70
INTERNSHIP 2024 I SHRUTI SHRESTHA
For the owner’s kitchen and dining area, the design concept featured an open plan lay-
out with a rustic style. This approach aimed to create a warm inviting atmosphere The open
plan allows for fluid interaction between spaces while maintaining a cozy, homely fee.
For the living room TV unit, the wall of the stairs was strategically utilized to cre-
ate a seamless and integrated design. By incorporating the staircase void, a small
atrium was formed, adding a sense of openness and connectivity to the space.
71
INITIAL PLANNING AND MOODBOARD
At the entrance, jali walls were incorporated to create a semi-private partition that al-
lows natural light and ventilation while maintaining privacy. Adjacent to this, a cozy
coffee corner was designed, providing a welcoming and tranquil spot for relaxation.
Both bedrooms with a neutral color palette of beige and brown, creating a calming and
serene atmosphere, simple and functional furnitures, with clean lines and minimal orna-
mentation. Rattan wardrobes which add a natural and textured element to the interior.

EXISTING SITE PLAN
The existing planning of the warehouse was not effectively aligned with the step-
by-step process required for the production of dog chews. The layout lacked prop-
er zoning, with no clear distinction between the office space and the process-
ing areas. Several rooms were not planned efficiently, leading to congestion in
spaces that required larger areas, such as the sorting, buffing, and torching zones.
88
INTERNSHIP 2024 I SHRUTI SHRESTHA
PROPOSED PLANNING
In the new planning for the warehouse, the office space and production areas are clearly dis-
tinguished to streamline the workflow. The products are first unloaded in the store outside
the parking area, then transported to the washing area. From there, they move to the adja-
cent drying area. Every other room is strategically planned according to the step-by-step pro-
duction process, ensuring a logical and efficient flow. The final stages include the pre-ship-
ping area, where the products are prepared for dispatch, before being sent to the shops.

08. Waiting Chair for Vatsalya
The project involved designing a waiting chair for mass production, intended for
use across multiple branches of Vatsalaya IVF. The design focused on efficient fab-
rication to meet the needs of high-volume production. The chair features a du-
rable metal frame, ensuring longevity and strength, while the seating area is de-
signed with comfortable cushioning for a pleasant and supportive experience for
patients. The chair’s design combines functionality with comfort, making it ide-
al for healthcare environments where comfort and durability are paramount.

SITE VISITS
94
INTERNSHIP 2024 I SHRUTI SHRESTHA
The Jawlakhel IVF project has recently commenced, and as part of the initial stages, soil test-
ing was a priority. To facilitate this, we visited the site to identify suitable locations for con-
ducting the soil tests. After a thorough assessment, we selected four distinct points across
different areas of the site for testing. However, the presence of an existing building on the
site posed some challenges, particularly in accessing one of the designated locations. This
required careful planning and adjustments to ensure that the soil testing could be carried out
effectively without compromising the integrity of the existing structure.
WELL

POINT 1 POINT 2
Initially, soil testing was conducted at Point 1 using the percussion drilling method. Hole
drilled to 20m depth. The test revealed that the site had 3 meters of infill material from the
ground level, 4-6m medium dense greyish sand with silt, then silty clay of medium plasticity
up to 20m. Since this location does not fall under the area where the building structure will
be situated, it was decided to conduct soil testing at a Point 2 location to obtain more rele-
vant data for the project’s foundation requirements.

The apartment had issues with wall seepage originating from the bathroom, which also led
to damage to the wood of the door. This problem is addressed as part of the renovation
process. During the site visit, a plumbing pressure test was underway due to dampness
served on the walls of an attached bathroom. This test was essential to verify the integrity
and reliability of the plumbing system, aiming to identify any leaks, weaknesses, or potential
failure points within the pipes and fittings. To simulate normal or above-normal operating
conditions, the plumbing system was filled with water, and a pressure of 10kg was applied for
a duration of 4hours. The pressure was carefully monitored throughout this period to detect
any drops, which could indicate leaks or compromised joints, thereby ensuring the system’s
durability and readiness for long-term use.

INTERNSHIP 2024 I SHRUTI SHRESTHA
CONCLUSION
My internship at Trikaru Design Studio, from August 1, 2024, to November 29, 2023, has been
a transformative experience, bridging the gap between academic knowledge and real-world
architectural practice. Throughout this period, I gained invaluable insights into detail orient-
ed, site-sensitive approaches, cost-effective and practical problem-solving. The hands-on in-
volvement in diverse projects not only deepened my understanding of architectural principles
but also honed my skills in design, organization, drafting, and using architectural software.
This internship has solidified my passion for architecture and equipped me with the practical
skills necessary for a successful career. The opportunity to contribute to real projects and
collaborate with experienced professionals has been an essential step in my professional de-
velopment. I am now better prepared to embark on the next phase of my journey in the field,
eager to apply the lessons learned and continue growing as an architect.
