1) What is meant by the term diffusion? (page 48 question 1, movie 2.1):

2) Distinguish between each of the following (page 49 movie 2.1 question 1):

(i) Diffusion and facilitated diffusion

(ii) Active transport and passive transport

3) What is meant by each of the following terms related to osmosis? (page 50 question 1,
movie 2.5):

(i) ‘Net flow’ o f water

(ii) Concentration gradient

(iii) Lysis

4) What is meant by a selectively permeable membrane? (page51, movie 2.6):

5) Explain the 2 main functions of the cell membrane (page51, movie 2.6):

a)

b)

6) Distinguish between passive and active transport (page51, movie 2.6):

7) Complete the following table (page51, movie 2.7):

8) Distinguish between the following: (page 52, movie 2.8, question 2):

(i) Hypotonic Solution

(ii) Isotonic Solution

(iii) Hypertonic Solution

9) Describe each of the following solutions in terms of water potential (concentration) and
dissolved solutes in each of these solutions: (page 53, movie 2.9, question 1):

10) What happens to an animal cell when it is put into pure water? Why? (page58, question 4):

(ii) Why does this not happen to a plant cell when placed in pure water? (page58, question 4):
11) The following apparatus was set up to demonstrate osmosis: (pg56 Question 2)

The selectively permeable visking tubing was filled with a 25% sucrose solution. What would
happen to the volume of the liquid inside the bag if it was surrounded by the following. Give
reasons in each case.

i) A 10% sucrose solution:

ii) Pure water:

iii) A 50% sucrose solution:

iv) A 25% sucrose solution

12) The following experiment was set up to investigate osmosis in living tissue (pg57 Q3):

i) What happened in potato A? Why?

ii) What happened in potato B? Why?

13) Below are two simple diagrams of plant cells in different conditions. Answer the following
questions:- (pg58 Q5)

(i) Which cell has been placed in distilled water?

Give reasons for your answer.

(ii) Which cell has been placed in strong sugar solution?

Give reasons for your answer.

(iii) Which cell is turgid?

(iv) Which cell is plasmolysed?

v) Name the following structures as indicated:-

14) Jenny is carrying out an experiment to investigate osmosis. She cut out cylinders of
potatoes and has placed them in different concentrations of sugar solution, as shown in the
diagram below. (pg59 Q6)
She measured the mass of the cylinders of potatoes before and after they had been placed in
different concentrations of sugar solutions for 20 minutes. Her results are shown below:-

(i) Fill in the missing numbers in the results table above.

(ii) Draw a graph of the concentration of sugar solution against the average change in mass on
the grid below:-
(iii) Use the graph to estimate the concentration of sugar inside the original potatoes. Explain
your answer.

(iv) Suggest why Jenny repeated the experiment and took the average of the results.
