Welcome to the Grade 3 Mathematics Alternative Delivery
Mode (ADM) Module on Reading and Writing Fractions in
Symbols and in Words!
This module was collaboratively designed, developed and
reviewed by educators both from public and private institutions
to assist you, the teacher or facilitator in helping the learners
meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while
overcoming their personal, social, and economic constraints in
schooling.
This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided
and independent learning activities at their own pace and time.
Furthermore, this also aims to help learners acquire the needed
21st century skills while taking into consideration their needs
and circumstances.

greater than one. The scope of this module permits it to be

correspond with the Mathematics Grade 3 learning materials
you are using.

In the previous module you learn how to visualize and


represent fractions equal to one and greater than one. In this
module, you will learn how to read and write fractions that are
equal to one and greater than one in symbols and in words.

Jemrard sliced a whole pizza pie into 12 equal parts. He


gave 3 slices to his sister Marjo, 3 slices to his mother and
father respectively and ate the rest.
Answer the following questions:

1. What part did each one get?

2. How many parts did Jemrard slice the pizza pie?

3. What is the fraction?

What is It

Let us learn how to read and write fractions in symbol and in


words.
How to read and write fractions?
Step 1. Read and write the numerator of a fraction spelled out
in words exactly as it appears as a numeral.
Step 2. Add a hyphen and then spell out the denominator as
you would write the rankings of a race or contest (with
“s” if the numerator is not equal to one) such as thirds,
fourths, fifths, sixths, sevenths, so on and so forth.
Except for numeral 2 where we used halves instead of
seconds.
Example:

The fraction is written in symbol as 2 .
In words, it would be read and written as nine – halves.

The fraction is written in symbol as 5 .
In words, it would be read and written as five – fifths.

Remember, if the denominator of the fraction is one, use the


singular form of the terms such as half, third, fourth, fifth, sixth,
seventh, so on and so forth.

What I Have Learned

How to read and write fractions?
