FAQs of the course material_d22ba69d51c1dd9dea9983f7aa9174be

The course provides two versions of lecture notes: a 'standard version' for exam content and a 'full version' with additional materials. Symbols '#' and '*' indicate content not covered in exams, catering to students' varying needs for depth of understanding. Exams focus on fundamental concepts rather than minor details, and additional supporting materials are optional and not included in exam coverage.

FAQs of the Course/Material

Welcome to the course! Following are some FAQs of the course/material.

1. Why are two versions of lecture notes provided in parallel?

A: yes, two parallel versions of lecture notes are provided in two separate folders, one
named with section titles (we name them “standard version” here), the other with
suffix “full” in their names.

Do not get confused by their names: the “standard version” already contains all the
texts of the lecture note, i.e., the content related to the exams; the only differences are
the “full versions” contain (1) answers of the puzzles discussed in the class and (2)
extra (large) images used to stimulate thinking but not covered in the exams.

The reason of such arrangement is to provide more flexibility and convenience to

students. In particular, (1) the “standard version” is more printer-friendly,
environmental friendly, and lighter from you to carry. You can fill in the puzzles and
participate in the adventure during the class; (2) do not worry about missing any part,
however, as the “full version” provides everything shown in the class, so you can
always have an E-copy for reference; (3) but, once again, the “standard version”
already include all the content covered by the exam.

In this regard, the “full versions” are uploaded after the completion of each session.

2. What do “#” and “*” refer to?

A: “#” and “*” are introduced in the lecture notes in the effort to best fulfill the
different needs of students. They refer to certain content displayed in the lecture but
excluded from the exam.

I am aware of and respect the different background and different career plan of
students; I introduce the symbols to provide sufficient information/knowledge to those
who hope to have more in-depth understanding of the topic, but reduce the burden of
the course to others at the same time. Another consideration is the extra content can
help in quicker/better understanding of the key concepts of the course.
Specifically, the “#” means that the whole page is not covered in the exam; the “*”
means the particular figure/picture/chart/equation is not included in the exam. Hope
you find them helpful to you!

3. What are the key parts to be tested in the exam?

A: the spirit of my course is to help students develop fundamental understanding of

the key concepts the course covers, and understand when/where to apply these
knowledge to solve challenges they encounter. As such, the exams are also prepared
to check if the students understand the basic concepts and what they are used for. I
would not give “challenging” questions targeting at memory of specific/minor details
such as “on page xxx line xxx”. Those key parts of the course are highlighted in the
text of the lecture note, and emphasized during the class.

4. Are those “additional supporting material” included in the coverage of the exams?

A: in general, none of the “additional supporting materials” are covered in the exams.
Nevertheless, I would like to give some explanations to the types of the “additional
supporting materials”. Such materials are provided for:

(1) Filling the gap between the students’ background prior to the course and the
required background of the course, if needed. As students come with different
backgrounds, these materials are provided to those with insufficient background on
certain subjects. In this regard, although the content would not be included directly,
understanding of them may be helpful in better understanding of the course content.

(2) Providing additional content to broaden view/insight on the discipline. Such

materials are completely optional and for reference only.

(3) Tables of standards/constants which are provided for students’ reference. Such
constants might be useful in solving practice questions but are not requested to
remember unless specifically stated in the course. Necessary constants will be
provided in the exam.

5. What kinds of practices are provided in my part of this course?

A: we have (1) in-class puzzles; (2) practice questions. You can get the sense of the
answer style from the model answers provided.
