A: yes, two parallel versions of lecture notes are provided in two separate folders, one
named with section titles (we name them “standard version” here), the other with
suffix “full” in their names.
Do not get confused by their names: the “standard version” already contains all the
texts of the lecture note, i.e., the content related to the exams; the only differences are
the “full versions” contain (1) answers of the puzzles discussed in the class and (2)
extra (large) images used to stimulate thinking but not covered in the exams.
In this regard, the “full versions” are uploaded after the completion of each session.
A: “#” and “*” are introduced in the lecture notes in the effort to best fulfill the
different needs of students. They refer to certain content displayed in the lecture but
excluded from the exam.
I am aware of and respect the different background and different career plan of
students; I introduce the symbols to provide sufficient information/knowledge to those
who hope to have more in-depth understanding of the topic, but reduce the burden of
the course to others at the same time. Another consideration is the extra content can
help in quicker/better understanding of the key concepts of the course.
Specifically, the “#” means that the whole page is not covered in the exam; the “*”
means the particular figure/picture/chart/equation is not included in the exam. Hope
you find them helpful to you!
4. Are those “additional supporting material” included in the coverage of the exams?
A: in general, none of the “additional supporting materials” are covered in the exams.
Nevertheless, I would like to give some explanations to the types of the “additional
supporting materials”. Such materials are provided for:
(1) Filling the gap between the students’ background prior to the course and the
required background of the course, if needed. As students come with different
backgrounds, these materials are provided to those with insufficient background on
certain subjects. In this regard, although the content would not be included directly,
understanding of them may be helpful in better understanding of the course content.
(3) Tables of standards/constants which are provided for students’ reference. Such
constants might be useful in solving practice questions but are not requested to
remember unless specifically stated in the course. Necessary constants will be
provided in the exam.
A: we have (1) in-class puzzles; (2) practice questions. You can get the sense of the
answer style from the model answers provided.
