Time: Three hours Full Marks: 100

(50 marks for each Part)

Use a separate Answer-Script for each Part

PART-I

Answer any three questions

Two marks reserved for neat and well organized answer

1. a) Give the torque balance equation in a motor with load and state the
conditions for acceleration, deceleration and constant speed operation.
When does the motor act as a generator and under what condition is_
braking torque produced?
4

b) What are the advantages of constant flux operation in DC and AC

motors? Why is field weakening used?
4

c) Explain the various methods by which the speed of an induction motor

can be controlled electronically, with their advantages and
disadvantages.
4

d) What are the advantages and characteristics ofSinusoidal Pulse Width

Modulation in Inverters for AC drives?
4

2. a) Sketch and explain how the principle of laRa compensation for speed
. .control of a separately excited DC motor (where soeed feedback is not
used) gives better performance over a simple voltage feedback
method.
8

b) Sketch and explain the principle of closed loop speed control of a DC

motor using dual feedback loops with speed and current feedback.
8

3. a) Sketch and explain how the principle of slip compensation for speed
control of an Induction motor (where speed feedback is not used)
gives better performance over open loop method.
8

b) Sketch and explain the principle of speed control of an Induction

motor using speed feedback .
8

4. a) Sketch the stator referred harmonic equivalent circuit of an Induction

motor and derive its approximate equivalent version for large order
harmonics. Justify all steps.
6

b) Explain the effects of harmonics on induction motor flux and torque.

10

5. a) Sketch and briefly justify the nature of the terminal voltage versus
frequency for an Induction Motor from zero speed to twice rated
speed.
4

b) Derive to show that under constant flux, the Torque-Speed curves of

an Induction Motor are straight lines, parallel to each other.
