Tools and Equipment in
2 Electronics
Hand tools are necessity for constructing electronics circuits. Basic hand tools
used in electronics are driving tools, splicing tools, soldering tools, boring tools,
cutting tools and auxiliary tools. Aside from hand tools, measuring instruments are
also needed for more precise and quality output. In this connection, three of the most
used instruments are presented here for you to get familiar with their uses and
function. Are you ready to learn? Let us start.
What’s In
Let’s review our last module. Can you classify which are conductors,
semiconductors, and insulators on the given example below?
1. arsenic
2. plastic
3. carbon
4. copper
5. silver
6. aluminum
7. wood
8. rubber,
9. germanium
10.glass

What’s New
Our topic for today is about the tools and equipment used in electronics. This
time we will have an activity. Below is a Word Search Puzzle. What you are going to
do is to find words that are related in our topic. The words may show up horizontally,
vertically, corner to corner (in reverse or upward). Once you found the word, ring it
on the puzzle,
O S C I L L O S C O P E F T H
A S T W Q X L O N G N O S E W

Are you familiar with the words in the puzzle? What is your idea about those words?

What is It
Read carefully the information sheet below and find out how much you have learned
in our lesson by answering the activities below.
DRIVING TOOLS - are made from hardened steel tools that help in accomplishing
tasks. Some of the tasks include installations, repairs and maintenance which
requires standard length driving tools, extended length driving tools and offset
driving tools.
blade
shank
Handle
6
Types of Screwdrivers
d. Allen Screwdriver - Most people call these Allen wrenches, but they actually
drive screw. It is used to drive or fasten hexagonal screws. The head has
hexagonal hole twisted by an Allen key. An alley key is a hexagonal shaped
wrench curve in letter-L. The Allen Key was invented by Gilbert F. Heublein.
7
SOLDERING TOOLS- Soldering is one of the key processes in the production of
electronic equipment. Soldering permits electronic components to be electrically
joined and also held in place.
a. Soldering Iron - is a device for applying heat to dissolve solder in attaching two metal
parts. A soldering iron is consist of a heated metal tip and an insulated handle. For
electronic work, wires are usually soldered to printed circuit boards, other wires, or
small terminals. A low-power iron (20-30 Watts) is right for this work.
Solder for electronics used contains small cores of flux, like the wires inside a mains
flex. The flux is corrosive, like an acid, and it cleans the metal surfaces as the solder
dissolves. This is why you must dissolve the solder actually on the joint, not on the iron
tip.
Always rinse your hands after using solder, this is especially vital with traditional
solder because it contains lead which is poisonous.
b. Soldering Tool Stand - is where the soldering iron is placed during usage. This
will keep the soldering iron away from combustible materials. The stand often
comes with a sponge used in washing the tip of the soldering iron.
8
c. Desoldering Tool - is a tool used in removing soldered wires and components on
printed circuit boards for troubleshooting and restoration purposes.
d. Splicing Tools - When two electric wires are combined together, the joint formed is
usually called a splice. A good splice should not only be mechanically safe, it also
forms an electrical connection which is just as effective conductor as the wire itself.
1. Long Nose is used for holding, twisting, and elongating the lead of electronic
component or connecting wires.
2. Side Cutter is a wire-cutting pliers, though they are not used to grip or turn
anything, but are used to cut wires.
3. Wire Stripper is a pair of contrasting blades much like scissors or wire cutters.
9
BORING TOOLS - boring is the method of expanding a hole that has already been
drilled (or cast), by means of a single-point cutting tool (or of a boring head containing
several such tools)
1. 12V Mini-Drill is a tool used to bore or drill holes in the printed circuit board
(PCB) with sizes from 1/32” – 1/16”.
2. Portable Electric Drill is a tool used for boring hole(s) in plastic or metal
chassis with the use of drill bits having sizes from 1/6” to approximately 1/4”.
3. Metal Files. These are tools having a series of sharp, parallel ridges or
teeth. Most files have a thin, sharp tang at one end to which a handle
can be fitted.
a. Flat File is parallel in width and tapered in thickness; they are used
for plane surfaces and edges.
10
b. Half Round File is tapered in width and thickness, coming to a point,
and is thinner than a standard half round and used for filing inside of
rings.
c. Round File - is also called rat-tail file which is gradually tapered and
used for various tasks that require a circular tool, such as broadening
round holes or cutting a scalloped edge
CUTTING TOOLS - a cutting device or cutter is any tool that is used to eliminate or
remove some materials from the work piece by means of shear
distortion. Cutting can be done by single-point or multipoint tools.
1. Utility Knife is a common tool used in cutting various trades and crafts for a
different of purposes.
11
2. Hacksaw is used for cutting metals. Some have pistol grips which keep the
hacksaw stable and easy to grip. The small hand-held hacksaws contain of a
metal arch with a handle that fits around a narrow, rigid blade.
3. Side Cutters - For trimming component leads close to the circuit board
AUXILIARY TOOLS
2. Paint Brush is made of bristles set in handle, used for cleaning dirty parts of a
circuit or an object aside from using it for painting.
12
ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT
Needle/pointer scale
Negative probe
c. Adjustment Screw – makes it possible to change the pointer to the zero position
of the scale.
d. Scale – is a sequence of marking used for reading the value of quantity. Scale
can have different types of scale, for voltage and current readings the scales have
generally linear which mean equal division for resistance.
e. Test Probe - Positive (red color) negative (black color) is used to connect the
circuit to the electric components being tested.
13
2. Oscilloscope. An oscilloscope is commonly abbreviated CRO, for cathode-
ray oscilloscope or scope is a piece of electronic test equipment that permits
signal voltages to be viewed, usually as a two-dimensional graph of 1 or
more electrically potential differences plotted as a function of time or of
some other voltage.
