Basketball Vocabulary:

1. Dribble: The act of repeatedly bouncing the ball on the floor while moving
around the court.
2. Pass: To throw or toss the ball to a teammate.
3. Shoot: To attempt to throw the ball into the basket to score points.
4. Layup: A close-range shot where a player lays the ball directly into the basket,
typically while driving towards the hoop.
5. Rebound: When a player retrieves the ball after a missed shot.
6. Steal: To take the ball away from an opponent, either by intercepting a pass or
swiping it directly from their possession.
7. Assist: A pass that directly leads to a made basket by a teammate.
8. Block: To deflect or stop an opponent's shot by reaching above the rim and
preventing the ball from going into the basket.
9. Dunk: A high-impact shot where a player jumps and forcefully slams the ball
into the basket.
10. Free Throw: A shot awarded after certain fouls, taken from the free-throw line
without opposition.
11. Jump Shot: A type of shot taken while jumping into the air, releasing the ball
at the peak of the jump.
12. Three-Pointer: A shot taken from beyond the three-point line, worth three
points.
13. Pick and Roll: An offensive play where a player sets a screen (pick) for a
teammate handling the ball, then rolls towards the basket to receive a pass.
14. Fast Break: A quick offensive play where a team rapidly moves the ball up the
court to score before the opposing defense can set up.
15. Crossover: A dribbling move where a player quickly changes the ball from one
hand to the other to get past a defender.
16. Post-up: Offensive strategy where a player positions themselves with their
back to the basket in the low post area, looking to receive the ball for a close-
range shot.
17. Foul: A violation of the rules, which may result in free throws or possession of
the ball being awarded to the opposing team.
18. Double Team: Defensive strategy where two players work together to guard a
single offensive player, putting pressure on them and limiting their options.
19. Zone Defense: Defensive strategy where players defend specific areas of the
court rather than individual opponents.
20. Full-Court Press: Defensive strategy where players apply pressure on the ball
handler for the entire length of the court, attempting to force turnovers and
disrupt the opposing team's offense.

Football Vocabulary:

1. Goal: The primary objective in football, scored by getting the ball into the
opponent's net.
2. Pass: A deliberate kick or header to transfer the ball to a teammate.
3. Shot: An attempt to score by kicking the ball towards the opponent's goal.
4. Tackle: The act of legally challenging an opponent to gain possession of the
ball.
5. Dribble: Controlling the ball with short kicks or touches while moving forward
on the field.
6. Header: Using the head to direct or control the ball, often in aerial duels or to
score.
7. Cross: A pass delivered from the side of the field into the opponent's penalty
area, usually aimed at a teammate.
8. Corner Kick: A set-piece restart where the ball is kicked from the corner arc
into the penalty area by the attacking team.
9. Free Kick: A direct or indirect kick awarded to a team due to a foul committed
by the opponent.
10. Penalty Kick: A direct free kick taken from the penalty spot, awarded for a foul
committed inside the penalty area, with only the goalkeeper to beat.
11. Goalkeeper: The player positioned in front of the goal whose primary role is
to prevent the opposition from scoring.
12. Defender: Players tasked with protecting their team's goal and preventing the
opposing team from scoring.
13. Midfielder: Players who operate in the middle third of the field, responsible
for both attacking and defending.
14. Forward: Players positioned closest to the opponent's goal, primarily
responsible for scoring goals.
15. Offside: A rule that prohibits attacking players from being ahead of the ball
and the second-last defender when the ball is played to them.
16. Foul: A violation of the rules, resulting in a free kick, penalty kick, or caution
(yellow card) or dismissal (red card) for the offending player.
17. Booking: Showing a yellow or red card to a player as a punishment for a foul
or misconduct.
18. Substitution: The replacement of one player with another during a match.
19. Injury Time: Additional time added to the end of each half to compensate for
stoppages due to injuries and other delays.
20. Formation: The tactical arrangement of players on the field, determining their
positions and roles during play.
