Chapter 3 Format

Chapter 3 outlines the research methods employed in the study, including a descriptive survey design to assess preparedness in mathematics among secondary school teachers and students. It details the sampling techniques, identifying the target respondents as public secondary mathematics teachers and fourth-year high school students from selected schools in Quezon City. Data collection was conducted using questionnaires and interviews to gather both quantitative and qualitative information.

METHODS OF RESEARCH

This chapter presents the research design, sampling techniques,

respondents, instrument, and statistical treatment of data.

RESEARCH DESIGN

The descriptive survey method is used to determine the

preparedness in mathematics, and other information relevant to the study.

Calderon and Gonzales (1993) pointed out that the “descriptive method of

research is a fact-finding study with adequate and accurate interpretation of

the findings. It describes what is. It describes with emphasis what actually

exist such as current conditions, practices, situations, or any phenomena.”

This study made use of the quantitative and qualitative approaches.

Quantitative research uses numerical information whereas qualitative

employs descriptive information, Lancy (1993).

SAMPLING TECHNIQUES

(no example sorry but rules are given to be followed)

Rules to be followed in accomplishing this part:

1. Determine what kind of sampling do you used? (select only,

systematic, stratified, cluster, and purposive, and explain). Simple

random will be used only if necessary.

2. Explain why did you choose that kind of sampling.

3. Explain how did you arrive of 50 respondents.

RESPONDENTS OF THE STUDY

The respondents of this study were the public secondary

mathematics teachers handling Mathematics IV, and the fourth year high

school students in the sampled section of the eight sampled schools in the

Division of Quezon City.

RESEARCH INSTRUMENT/TECHNIQUE

The questionnaire, and interview are the instruments and techniques

employed by the researcher in obtaining data/information needed in this

study.
Questionnaire: This is the primary source of information in this

study. The first part is the mathematics teachers’ profile such as age,

gender, highest educational attainment, field of specialization, in-service

training attended related to mathematics, instructional materials used, and

performance rating. The second part deals with the students' profile such

age, gender, students’ attitudes towards mathematics, parents’ educational

attainment, occupation of parents, and family monthly income. The third

part involves on the strategies employed by the teachers to master the

least mastered competencies in mathematics. The fourth part covers the

problems encountered by the respondents in teaching and learning

mathematics.

Interview: This is a face to face gathering of data and information

from the mathematics teachers, students, master teachers and the head

teachers, with the purpose of obtaining the additional information not

solicited from the questionnaire and to validate the existing data.
