METHOD STATEMENT FOR GRP LINING SYSTEM
FOR UNDER GROUND WATER TANK

SPECIFIACATIONS:
GRP Lining is a significant application in the waterproofing activity and it has
diverse applications including corrosion resistance and waterproofing to the water
storage tanks, Sewerage Tanks, Chemical Storage Tanks and Manholes etc.
Special grade resins are used to attain various properties, which allow the GRP
Lining to withstand resistance to fungi & algae, strong acids, chemicals and high
temperature.
GRP Lining will completely and seamlessly seal the cracks, leaks and corrosion.

1. PURPOSE AND SCOPE

This method statement is for the purpose of installing or applying Glass Reinforced
Plastic known throughout this document as GRP.
The method statement will particularly cover water tanks, sewage pipes and
manholes together with stormwater drainage systems and underground water
aqua seal
tanks.
The scope involves covering water tanks to the specified 4mm thickness of GRP.

2. MATERIALS
 GP RESIN (Data Sheet enclosed)
 FIBRE CHOPPED MAT, EMULSION BONDED
 CATALYST
 GEL COAT (TOP COAT)

Store GRP materials in covered sheds and take precautions to ensure that
workmen and the work area are adequately protected from the fire hazards
and health hazards resulting from handling, mixing and application of GRP
systems.
3. SURFACE PREPARATION

The surface must be sound, clean dry, free from sust, oil and laitance etc. All traces
of form release agents must be removed. On chalky and dusty surfaces, all loose
material must be removed by stiff bristle brushing or with stone grinder if
required.

4. EQUIPMENT & TOOLS

 Mohair Rollers
 Steel Rollers
 Measuring Tape
 Brushes
 Scrappers
 Cutting knife
 Grinders
 Gloveses

5. METHODOLOGY

The working area will be clear and free of all contaminants. Moisture must be
eliminated from the working area for successful GRP application. All hydrocarbon
aqua seal
substances such as oils and lubricants will be removed for perfect adhesion. Any
other surface impurities will also be removed. Cleaning may include brooms
brushes vacuum cleaners for the removal of heavy and fine particles. Materials will
be stored in a manner to avoid spills causing staining. Edges will chamfer and
corners rounded with the prescribed filler before the lining is applied.
Imperfections will be rectified with the use of resins suitable for the GRP
application.

A bonding coat such as (Data Sheet enclosed) will be applied thinly to the working
area to assist the chopped strands mat adherence to the working surface.

After the bonding coat is cured, the chopped mat strands (Data Sheet enclosed)
will be applied to make sure that the CSM is sufficiently wet for good application.
Ensure sufficient impregnation of the CSM to avoid the exothermic heat.

A second layer of the CSM (Data Sheet enclosed) can be applied again using the
steel roller when the first layer is sufficiently cured.
It is recommended to use 50mm overlapping for the laminating process.

When complete and signed off as complete, a finla White Gel Coat (Data Sheet
enclosed) will be applied with rate of 600 gms/m2. The White Gel coat
provide a smooth surface to provide adequate protection.

When the installation is complete and working materials such as tool and access
platforms will be removed from the working area. The floor application of the
GRP will now follow the same protocol as the walls.

6. SUBCONTRACTOR SUPERVISION

The subcontractor will follow the method statement and apply the lining as
specified.
 The subcontractor will designate labor to ensure the work is carried out as
specified and in a timely manner.

 The subcontractor will continually liaise with the site engineer and proceed
with the site engineer’s instructions to comply with the method statement.

 Continuous checking will be conducted to ensure the specification of 4mm

of GRP is being met within accordance with the specification. Remedial
actions should be undertaken if required to comply with specifications.

 The subcontractor will ensure he has contact with the health and safety
officer and provides a safe working environment for the installation team.
aqua seal
 It will be the responsibility of the subcontractor to provide adequate
training to the installation team and to provide the required PPE.

occupational exposure limits; or if irritation occurs. Use respiratory
protection in accordance with your company's respiratory
protection program, local regulations and OSHA regulations ender
29 CFR1910.134.

Skin protection: Loose fitting long sleeved shirt that covers to the
base of the neck, long pants and gloves. Skin irritation is known to
occur chiefly at pressure points such as around neck, wrist, waist
and between fingers.

Eye Protection: Safety glasses, goggles or face shield.

Work and Hygienic practices:

Handle using good industrial hygiene and safety practices. Avoid

unnecessary exposures by using adequate local exhaust
ventilation. Remove material from the skin and eyes after contact.
Remove material from clothing using vacuum equipment (never
use compressed air). Always wash work clothes separately from
other clothing. Wipe out the washer or sink to prevent loose glass
fibers from getting on other clothing ). Keep the work area clean of
dusts and fibers released during processing or fabrication. Use
vacuum equipment to clean up product. Avoid dry sweeping or
using compressed air as these techniques re-suspend dusts and
fibers into the air. Have access to safety showers and eye wash
stations.

Fiber glass continuous filament:

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in June,

1987, categorized fiber glass continuous filament as not classifiable
with respect to human carcinogenicity (Group 3). The evidence
from Human as well as animal studies was evaluated by IARC as
insufficient to classify fiber glass continuous filament as a possible,
probable, or confirmed Cancer causing material.
The American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists
(ACGIH)A4 classification, not classifiable as a human carcinogen,
for respirable continuous filament glass fibers is based on
inadequate data in terms of its carcinogenicity in humans and/or
animals.

For respirable continuous filament glass fiber, a TLV-TWA of 1

fiber/cc was adopted to protect workers against mechanical
irritation. The TLV-TWA of 5 mg/m3was adopted for on respirable
glass filament fiber, measured as installable dust, to prevent
mechanical irritation of the upper respiratory tract.

Note: There are no known chronic health effects connected with

long term use or contact with these products. Products that are
chopped, crushes or severely mechanically processed during
manufacture or use may contain a very Small amount of respirable
glass fiber -like fragments. NIOSH defines "respirable fibers" as
greater than 5 microns in length and less than 3 microns in
diameter with an aspect ratio of >=5:1(length-to-width ratio).

Chronic study in animals :

A laboratory test was conducted with a different product (special

application glass fiber) with comparable composition and durability.
Test animals breathing very high concentrations of respirable fibers
on a long-term basis developed fibrosis, lung cancer and
mesothelioma.

About 23% of the rats (n=43) exposed to 1022 f/cc for 5 hrs/day,
7 days/week for 52 weeks developed lung tumors (adenoma and
carcinoma). Five percent (5%) of the unexposed control group
(n=38) developed lung tumors (adenoma and carcinoma).

Five percent (5%) of the rats in the exposed group developed

mesothelioma and 12.5% developed advanced fibrosis. None of the
rats in the unexposed control group developed mesothelioma and
0.6% developed advanced fibrosis.
A second group of rats was exposed to a similar concentration of
asbestos (respirable amosite fibers) for 5 hours/day, 7days a week
for 52 weeks. 38% of the rats developed lung tumors (adenoma
and carcinoma) and 5% developed mesothelioma. 14.5%
developed advance fibrosis.

Importantly, this result, that is similar disease rates for the special
application fiber and amosite asbestos, had been predicted in a
1996 scientific paper (Inhal..Tox 8:323-343, 1996 ref). That paper
specifically stated that in rats all fibers which were durable enough
to remain in a rat lung for two (2) years or more would produce
the same disease rates if the exposures were the same. While the
special application fiber is much less durable than asbestos, it is
stable enough to remain in the rat lung for more than the two (2)
years time period. The results of the current study are therefore
not unexpected, and they do not indicate that similar disease rates
would be seen in longer lived species or humans, exposed to these
fibers.
