MECH 211E (Statics and Dynamics of Rigid Bodies)

Problem Set 1 (Force, Force Components, Resultants)

Instruction: Answer the following questions. Show your complete solution. Write legibly, avoid erasures, draw
and label the Free Body Diagram and Force Triangle, Box your final answer.
1. Resolve the 360-lb force into components along the cables AB and AC. Use α = 55° and β = 30°.
Ans. PAB = 235 lb. PAC = 317 lb.

2. The two forces shown act on the structural member AB. Determine the magnitude of P such that the resultant
of these forces is directed along AB.
Ans. 3.26 kN
3. The truck is to be towed using two ropes. If the resultant force is to be 950 N, directed along the positive x
axis, determine the magnitudes of forces FA and FB acting on each rope and the angle Ɵ of FB so that the
magnitude of FB is a minimum. FA acts on 20° from the x – axis as shown.
Ans. FA = 893 N ; FB = 325 N ; Ɵ = 70°
4. Determine the design angle Ɵ (0° ≤ Ɵ ≤ 90°) for strut AB so that the 400-lb horizontal force has a component
of 500 lb directed from A towards C. What is the component of force acting along member AB? Take φ=
40°
Ans. Ɵ = 53.5° ; FAB = 621 lb.

5. Two forces are applied at point B of beam AB. Determine graphically the magnitude and direction of their
resultant.
Ans. R = 3.30 kN ∠ 66.6°
6. The cable stays AB and AD help support pole AC. Knowing that the tension is 120 lb in AB and 40 lb in AD,
determine graphically the magnitude and direction of the resultant of the forces exerted by the stays at A.
Ans. R = 139.1 lb. ∠ 67.0°
7. A load of 5.89 N is lifted by two strings, making angles of 20° and 35° with the vertical. Calculate the
tensions in the strings. [For a system such as this, the vectors representing the forces form a closed triangle
when the system is in equilibrium].
Ans. 2.46 N, 4.12 N
8. Four coplanar forces act on a body at point O as shown in the figure below. Find their resultant graphically.
Ans. R = 119 N ∠ 143°
