Year 7 Science MY MICROSCOPE PACK Name: ____________________

A microscope uses lenses to magnify small objects, making it easier to see their details.
Micro means ___________________________
Scope means ___________________________

In a light microscope, light shines up through a hole in the stage, then through a slide (usually
made of glass) with a small sample on it.
Collect a microscope and find each of the labelled parts shown on this diagram.
When you have found it, colour it on the diagram. Use a different colour for each part.
Briefly mention the function of each part, next to its name on the diagram.

1
Important things to remember
Why this is important
when using a microscope
Pick up the microscope using the arm and the base and
carry the microscope upright

When holding a slide, pick it up and hold it by the outer

edges

Centre the sample on the slide over the hole in the stage
(using the stage manipulator knobs)

Start with the 4x objective lens

Start focusing using the coarse adjustment knob

Centre the sample in your view using the 4x objective

lens BEFORE changing to the 10x lens

When using the 10x lens, use ONLY the fine adjustment
knob to focus

Centre what you want to look at in your view using the

10x objective lens BEFORE changing to the 40x lens

Carefully turn to the 40x lens to check that the lens will
not touch the slide

When using the 40x lens, use ONLY the fine adjustment
knob to focus

When removing a slide from the stage: turn off the light, turn to the 4x lens, then lower the stage

When packing away: turn off the light, turn to the 4x lens, lower the stage, return the slide, spread/open
THEN straighten out and turn the oculars, unplug, wrap the cord neatly and put on the cover

Collect a slide of the letter ‘e’.

Place the slide on the stage of the microscope and use the adjustment knobs to focus the letter.
a) In the space below, draw the letter as it appears under the microscope:

b) Have a partner move the slide to the left while you look through the oculars.
Which way does the slide appear to be moving?

c) Have a partner move the slide up (away from you) while you look through the oculars.
Which way does the slide appear to be moving?

MICROSCOPES VID WORKSHEET

Watch the microscopes video on google classroom and answer the following questions:

1) Label the light source on the diagram to the right, and explain what it does.

2) Label the diaphragm on the diagram to the right, and explain what it does.

3) Label the stage on the diagram to the right.

4) Label the objective lenses on the diagram to the right.

5) Label the oculars on the diagram to the right.

6) Label the revolving nosepiece on the diagram to the right and describe its function

3
6) Label the following objective lenses with their name and strength. The final one has been done for you already.

Name: high power

Strength: 40x

7) What is the magnification of the ocular (eyepiece) lens for the microscope in the video?

8) If I have a 10x ocular (eyepiece) lens and use the 4x objective lens, what is my total magnification? Show working out.

9) Label the coarse adjustment knob and the fine adjustment knob on the diagram to the right.

Explain the difference between the functions of these two knobs.

10) Label the stage manipulator knobs on the diagram to the right and explain their functions.

11) Label the arm and base on the diagram to the left.

12) How should you always carry the microscope?

4
13) Label the stage clip on the diagram to the right and explain its function.

14) What objective lens should you always start with? Give reasoning.

15) If you then changed to the low power lens, using this microscope, what would be the total magnification? Show
working out.

16) When using the 10x and 40x objective lenses, which adjustment knob should you use to focus? Give reasoning.

17) Complete the microscope clean-up checklist below:

18) What is the name of the 100x lens, and why don’t we use it in Year 7?
