still remember vividly some of the long
flights I made during my professional
life as an airline captain.
In one of them, I would take off in
Germany at 11:00 a.m. and touch down
in California at 1:00 p.m. on the same
day. Comparing the local departure
and arrival times, it might appear that a
flight across the Atlantic Ocean and the
North American continent took only two
hours. The Boeing 747 was fast, but not
that fast! In reality, it took us about 11
hours, depending on wind, to travel the
5,600 miles (9,000 km).
Because we were flying west, the sun
never set during our flight. We enjoyed
broad daylight all the way from Germany
to California.
Returning to Germany, however, was
a totally different story. Even when we
took off in the early afternoon, as we flew
east, the sunset came more quickly than
it normally would, and before we knew
it, night was upon us.
During these long flights, my soul was
often filled with awe as I pondered the
beauty of this earth and the order of God’s

“He Loveth the World”
Jesus Christ was the only perfect man to ever walk the
earth. Because of His perfect life, He owed no debt to
justice. Out of love for us, He gave His life for each one of
us individually and for all of God’s children collectively to
open the door to immortality and eternal life.
Despite what Satan would have us believe, none of us
are beyond the Savior’s ability to rescue us. None of us are
disqualified from the grace of forgiveness. None of us are
beyond being “encircled about eternally in the arms of his
love” (2 Nephi 1:15).
This greatest of all gifts comes from the enabling
and redeeming power of the Atonement of Jesus Christ.
Because of the Savior’s suffering in Gethsemane and on
Golgotha, He knows how to save us from and help us through
any and all of our infirmities (see Alma 7:12).
“He doeth not anything save it be for the benefit of the
world; for he loveth the world, even that he layeth down his
own life that he may draw all men unto him” (2 Nephi 26:24).
Jesus Christ is our strength!
He reaches out.
He restores.
He rescues.
“When the Savior [gave His atoning sacrifice] for
all mankind, He opened a way that those who follow
Him can have access to His healing, strengthening,
and redeeming power,” said President Russell M. Nelson.1
That power, like the sun, is always there. It never wavers.
The choice to follow in the footsteps of the Savior is like
walking out of the shadows and into the sunlight, where
we can receive the blessings of God’s light, warmth, and
love. I know that one day, we will look back and be filled
with gratitude that we made the eternally important
decision to trust Jesus Christ and His divine love to lift and
strengthen us.2

“Return unto Me”
The Book of Mormon tells of a people who spent three
days in the most profound darkness following the Savior’s
Crucifixion. The physical darkness around them could
symbolize the spiritual darkness all of us experience because
of sin. Then the people heard the voice of Christ inviting
them out of the darkness and into His light:
“Will ye not now return unto me, and repent of your
sins, and be converted, that I may heal you?” (3 Nephi 9:13).
“Offer for a sacrifice unto me a broken heart and a contrite
spirit” (3 Nephi 9:20).
“Repent and return unto me with full purpose of heart”
(3 Nephi 10:6).
The Savior extends those same invitations to us today
when we find ourselves lost in the darkness. Just as each
sunrise marks the beginning of a new day, each time we
repent, we receive a fresh start, a bright new beginning.
That doesn’t mean it’s easy. Repentance means change,
and change doesn’t happen quickly. While joyful, repentance
does include “godly sorrow” (2 Corinthians 7:10). It requires
that we admit and confess our wrongs, asking forgiveness
from God and from those we may have harmed. Most of all,
it requires that we seek “the Spirit of the Lord Omnipotent,”
that we may experience “a mighty change in . . . our hearts,
that we have no more disposition to do evil, but to do good
continually” (Mosiah 5:2).
That kind of change is a long journey, but as soon as you
take the first step, “the day of your salvation” begins, and
“immediately shall the great plan of redemption be brought
about unto you” (Alma 34:31).
Through our sincere repentance, God promises to forgive
and remember our sins no more. When we have difficulty
forgetting our sins, let us strive to trust in the Lord’s promise

February 2025 5
to forgive and learn to forgive others and ourselves.
“Our spirits are damaged when we make mistakes and
commit sins,” taught President Boyd K. Packer (1924–
2015). “But unlike the case of our mortal bodies, when the
repentance process is complete, no scars remain because
of the Atonement of Jesus Christ.”3

“Bring Them Hither”

The Savior is the Master Healer. One of the most beautiful
demonstrations of His healing power is found in the Book
of Mormon, in the account of His personal ministry in
ancient America:
“Have ye any that are sick among you?” He asked. “Bring
them hither. Have ye any that are lame, or blind, or halt, or
maimed, or leprous, or that are withered, or that are deaf,
or that are afflicted in any manner? Bring them hither and I
will heal them, for I have compassion upon you; my bowels
are filled with mercy. . . .
“And it came to pass that when he had thus spoken, all
the multitude, with one accord, did go forth with their sick
and their afflicted, and their lame, and with their blind, and
with their dumb, and with all them that were afflicted in
any manner; and he did heal them every one as they were
brought forth unto him” (3 Nephi 17:7, 9).
Every time the Savior healed anyone “aff licted in any
manner,” both before and after His Resurrection, it was
a testament to His ultimate power to heal our souls. Each
miraculous healing was but a prelude and promise of the
lasting physical and emotional healing that will come to each
of us in the Resurrection, which “is the Lord’s consummate
act of healing.”4
It’s true that our prayers for healing in this life are
not always answered in the way we hope, but they are
never ignored. The time for healing will come, just as the
darkness of night always gives way—at the right time—to
the glorious sunrise.

6 Liahona
As President Nelson has testified: “Our faith is never
unappreciated. I know that an all-wise Heavenly Father’s
perspective is much broader than is ours. While we know of
our mortal problems and pain, He knows of our immortal
progress and potential. If we pray to know His will and
submit ourselves to it with patience and courage, heavenly
healing can take place in His own way and time.”5
Recently my wife, Harriet, and I included in our prayers
a special hope and pleading on behalf of some we love. We
prayed that their healthcare team would be given special
ability to cure their illnesses. We were impressed to add that
even if an immediate cure or recovery might not take place,
the Savior’s healing power might bring them comfort and
peace. The healing effect of the Savior’s redeeming power
may have an even greater impact on our emotional, spiritual,
and even physical health than any earthly cure we may
receive. Jesus Christ is the Healer in this life and in eternity.
My brothers and sisters, dear friends, I testify that our
Savior’s mercy is sufficient to heal your wounds, cleanse
you of sin, strengthen you for trials to come, and bless you
with hope, wisdom, and His peace. His power is always
there—constant and reliable—even when we, for a time,
feel distant from His love, light, and warmth.
I pray we never lose our sense of awe and profound
gratitude for all that Jesus Christ has done for us. Please
know that you are loved perfectly, and remember what you
have been promised eternally.
“May God grant unto you that your burdens may
be light, through the joy of his Son,” Jesus Christ (Alma
33:23). ◼

TRAGEDY AND HEALING IN PERU

L
ate in the day on June 7, 1990, mission companions Manuel
Navarro and Guillermo Chuquimango were walking back to
their house. They enjoyed being missionaries—working hard,
visiting different regions of Peru, and bringing people to Jesus Christ.
Their current area, Huaraz, could be dangerous at night though. A
revolutionary group called Sendero Luminoso, or the Shining Path,
had been warring with the Peruvian government for more than a
decade. Lately, their attacks had become more aggressive as rising
inflation and economic strife beset the country.1

February 2025 9
To help keep the missionaries safe, the five missions
in Peru set curfews and restricted missionary work to
the daytime. But this evening, Elder Navarro and Elder
Chuquimango were feeling happy and talkative. They had
just taught a gospel lesson and had about 15 minutes to
get home.
As they walked and chatted, Elder Navarro spotted two
young men a block or so ahead of them. They were pushing
a yellow car. Manuel thought about lending a hand, but
the men soon started the car and drove off.
A short time later, the missionaries approached a park
near their home. The yellow car was parked about five
feet from where they walked. Nearby was a military base.
“It looks like a car bomb,” Elder Chuquimango said.
Elder Navarro saw some people running away, and in that
instant the car exploded.
The blast slammed into Elder Navarro, throwing him
into the air as shrapnel whizzed around him. When he hit
the ground, he was terrified. He thought of his companion.
Had he taken the brunt of the explosion?2
Just then he felt Elder Chuquimango pick him up off
the ground. The park looked like a war zone as soldiers
from the base—the bomb’s apparent target—fired their
guns past the smoldering remains of the car. Leaning on
his companion, Elder Navarro managed to walk the rest
of the way home.
When they arrived, he went into the bathroom and
looked in the mirror. His face was bloody, but he could
not find a wound on his head. He simply felt faint.
“Give me a blessing,” he told his companion. Elder
Chuquimango, who had received only minor injuries,
placed his trembling hands on Elder Navarro’s head and
blessed him.
Not long after, at the hospital, Elder Navarro fainted from
loss of blood. He urgently needed a transfusion. Saints from
Huaraz came to the hospital, hoping to donate blood, but
none of them had the right type. Doctors then tested Elder
Chuquimango’s blood and found him to be a perfect match.

THE STORY OF THE RESTORATION OF

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST

What happened in the early years of the Restoration is a “marvelous work and a wonder”!

A
s a returned missionary from the New York and Pennsylvania Historic
Sites, I have a deep love for the events of the Restoration of the
Church of Jesus Christ. As the Church grows and the gospel spreads
around the world, I want others to have the same opportunity I did to feel
the spirit of these places. Come with me on a tour of these sacred sites as I
recount some events of the Restoration.

1 THE FIRST VISION

I imagine the new green leaves emerging from the trees as Joseph Smith
stepped into the woods near his home that spring day in 1820. I imagine
him at 14 years old, not wanting to “remain in [the] darkness and confusion”
(Joseph Smith—History 1:13) he had felt for the previous two years. This
grove of trees would later become known as the Sacred Grove.1
He later wrote that as a young teen his “mind became exceedingly
distressed, for I became convicted of my sins. . . . Therefore, I cried unto
the Lord for mercy, for there was none else to whom I could go and obtain
mercy.”2 This is one of the reasons that led him to prayer that morning. He
recorded the answer to his prayer:
“I saw a pillar of light exactly over my head, above the brightness of the
sun, which descended gradually until it fell upon me.
“. . . When the light rested upon me I saw two Personages, whose brightness
and glory defy all description, standing above me in the air. One of them
spake unto me, calling me by name and said, pointing to the other—This is
My Beloved Son. Hear Him!” (Joseph Smith—History 1:16–17).
God the Father pointed to His Beloved Son, Jesus Christ, showing Joseph
where to find relief. And that is where He still points today. President
Russell M. Nelson taught, “Whatever questions or problems you have, the
answer is always found in the life and teachings of Jesus Christ.”3

Missionaries from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints first
came to Papua New Guinea in 1980. Many people learned about the
Church from friends before asking for missionaries to come to their
villages and teach them. The first Church building was completed in
1984, and the first stake was organized in 1995. Today, the Church in
Papua New Guinea has:

You Will Know What to Do

By Melissa Smith, Utah, USA

In a family’s great moment of need, the Lord showed me He was

mindful of them.

O ne morning shortly after being called as a Relief Society president,

I received a phone call from the mother of a family in our ward. She
disclosed the loss of her employment, medical issues, and other challenges. It
was clear the family had used the last of their resources. As I listened, I silently
prayed that the Holy Ghost would guide and direct my words and actions.
I assured this sister that I would contact our bishop and would reach out
later that day. I felt an urgency to help this family, especially the children
within the home. After making multiple phone calls, however, I discovered
that the entire bishopric and elders quorum presidency were out of town.
Being new to my calling, I was unsure what to do.
After kneeling in prayer and asking for help, I decided to go grocery
shopping for the family and work out things with the bishop upon his return.
I also decided to donate some needed items. As I prepared to leave in my car,
I had a clear and unmistakable impression: “Wait.” I followed the prompting
and got out of my car. An hour later, a knock came at my front door.
Outside stood a widow from our ward. She handed me two large grocery
sacks of food and said, “Sister Smith, I know you will know what to do with
these.” Then she hurried down our porch steps to her car.
I was overwhelmed with gratitude and tender feelings from the Spirit.
The Lord had answered my prayer. I was reminded of Nephi, who was led
by the Spirit, not knowing beforehand what he should do (see 1 Nephi 4:6).
When we pray and follow small, quiet promptings, we have this assurance
from the Lord: “It shall be given you in the very hour, yea, in the very
moment, what ye shall say” (Doctrine and Covenants 100:6)—and sometimes
what we should do. The Lord knew this family’s pressing and immediate
needs before I did. I was blessed to witness a tender mercy of the Lord as
this widow provided an offering that fed a family in their very hour of need.

self-esteem was low, I focused only on my insecurities,

Jesus Christ has made it possible for us to cultivate joy through our agency.
As we repent, learn from our mistakes, and strive to do good things, we are
fulfilling the measure of our creation. We are choosing joy.
When you really think about it, having this power is an amazing blessing.
Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles advised: “We
shouldn’t wait to be happy until we reach some future point, only to discover
that happiness was already available—all the time! Life is not meant to be
appreciated only in retrospect. ‘This is the day which the Lord hath made . . . ,’
the Psalmist wrote. ‘Rejoice and be glad in it’ [Psalm 118:24].”2
My life has changed as I’ve chosen to change my thoughts. I’m more confident,
kind, and joyful. I’m more open to trying new things and accepting opportunities.
And I’m better at noticing the Lord’s hand in my life.
With the help of Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ, I’ve become better at
making decisions that bring me true happiness and peace.
As you seek Their direction, I know They will guide you too. ◼

n several different revelations in 1829, the Lord gave repeated
commands to participate in a harvest (see Doctrine and
Covenants 4; 6; 11; 12; 14). Because some of the verses are
repeated in each revelation, we can assume that the Lord has
an important message He wants us to learn.
A closer look at the symbols in these passages can help us
better understand their significance.

The harvest is complete when all
the good crops have been gathered.
They are protected and preserved.
Similarly, when we help individuals
make and keep covenants with God,
they will be protected and preserved
for eternity. The Lord has promised,
“How great shall be your joy with
him in the kingdom of my Father!”
(Doctrine and Covenants 18:15).
While the imagery of gathering is
repeated across these sections, what
is not repeated are the instructions of
exactly where or how to harvest. The
time for harvest is now, but conversion
is unique to each individual. If you
wonder what you could do to help
gather the harvest, consider President

Seeking Revelation
from God
The Doctrine and Covenants
contains important teachings
about revelation.

Where should I look for a new job? How can I

Perhaps you have had questions such as these
about your life, your relationships, or your faith.
The Holy Ghost can guide you as you address
questions like these. Passages in the Doctrine

can help you learn about receiving revelation for
your pressing questions.

prophets does much to aid our progress in this life. Claudio D. Zivic

Emeritus General
n the summer of 1828, the Prophet Joseph Smith was working Authority Seventy

diligently on translating the Book of Mormon. One day his scribe,

Martin Harris, asked Joseph for permission to take the first 116
manuscript pages to his home in Palmyra, New York, so his family
could see them. Joseph was unsure and asked the Lord what he
should do. The Lord told him not to let Martin take the pages. Martin
begged Joseph to ask again. Joseph did so, but the answer was the
same. Martin pleaded with Joseph to ask the Lord once more. This
time the Lord allowed them to do as they pleased.1
Joseph told Martin he could take the pages if he most solemnly
covenanted to show them only to his wife and certain family members.
Martin promised and took the pages home. But Martin broke his
promise and showed the pages to others. Later, when Martin went to
get the pages, he could not find them. They were lost.
The Lord severely chastised Joseph for not listening when He said
not to let Martin take the manuscript (see Doctrine and Covenants
3:5–8). For a time, the Lord took away the plates and Joseph’s ability
to translate, but the Lord assured him that he could be forgiven (see
Doctrine and Covenants 3:9–10). Joseph repented, and in time the plates
were returned. Joseph moved forward with renewed determination.2

The Works of God Cannot Be Frustrated
After this dramatic ordeal, the Prophet Joseph Smith received a
revelation in which the Savior taught invaluable principles that can
help us as we progress throughout our lives.
“The works, and the designs, and the purposes of God cannot be

Efforts frustrated, neither can they come to naught,” the Lord said.
“For God doth not walk in crooked paths, neither doth he turn to the

to stop
right hand nor to the left, neither doth he vary from that which he hath
said, therefore his paths are straight, and his course is one eternal round.
“Remember, remember that it is not the work of God that is frustrated,

the work but the work of men” (Doctrine and Covenants 3:1–3).
We can become frustrated when we expect God’s work to depend only

of God
on us. The Lord explained, “Although a man may have many revelations,
and have power to do many mighty works, yet if he boasts in his own
strength, . . . he must fall” (Doctrine and Covenants 3:4).

will never Since the time of Adam and Eve, there have been those seeking to
frustrate the work of God. This continues today. But efforts to stop the

succeed.
work of God will never succeed. This principle teaches us that we ought
not to become frustrated even when faced with difficulties.
The fact that this is God’s work does not guarantee that we will be free
from problems. The Apostle Paul reminds us that we may be “troubled on
every side, yet not distressed; . . . perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted,
but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed” (2 Corinthians 4:8–9).
When we find ourselves faced with problems, the Lord counsels us
to “pray always, that you may come off conqueror; yea, that you may
conquer Satan, and that you may escape the hands of the servants of
Satan that do uphold his work” (Doctrine and Covenants 10:5).

Do Not Fear Man More than God

The Lord also told the Prophet Joseph Smith, “You should not have
feared man more than God” because “men set at naught the counsels
of God, and despise his words” (Doctrine and Covenants 3:7).
We should be valiant in the testimony of Jesus Christ and not fear to
make our beliefs known. As we do so with surety, firmness, and strength
and guidance from the Lord, we can do much good and even at times
earn the respect of others. We should not fear man more than God.

Repent
“Remember, God is merciful,” the Lord taught Joseph. “Therefore, repent
of that which thou hast done which is contrary to the commandment
which I gave you, and thou art still chosen, and art again called to the
work” (Doctrine and Covenants 3:10).

46 L i a h o n a
Constant repentance continually qualifies us to stand worthy. When we repent, we
turn to our Heavenly Father with a broken heart and contrite spirit, ask for forgiveness
of our sins, and make every effort to not commit them again. Through the Prophet
Joseph Smith, the Lord revealed, “For behold, I, God, have suffered these things for
all, that they might not suffer if they would repent” (Doctrine and Covenants 19:16).
While serving as a mission president, I presided over the membership council
of a brother that resulted in the withdrawal of his Church membership. This man
repented of his sins and after a year was authorized to be rebaptized.
After his baptism, I received an email from him that read: “Dear President,
yesterday the ordinance of baptism was performed, and I can assure you that I feel
like new. A miracle was performed within me. The sacrifice of the Lord Jesus Christ
became effective in me. Today, I feel free from the oppression of sin. I know that
I would not have achieved this alone. My leaders and my wife helped me keep my
sights on the goal. Christ is my Savior. The miracle of forgiveness exists.”
We can repent, like this brother and the Prophet Joseph Smith, and the Lord can
forgive us and call us to serve anew in His work.

Rely On the Lord

We must rely on the Lord if we truly desire to progress in this life. The Lord explained
to Joseph that Martin Harris fell because he “set at naught the counsels of God, and
[broke] the most sacred promises which were made before God, and . . . depended
upon his own judgment and boasted in his own wisdom” (Doctrine and Covenants
3:13). I pray that the Lord will bless us so that we do not make the same mistakes.
In following the Lord’s teachings, we do not depend on our own judgment or boast
in our own wisdom, but rather, we accept His inspiration and guidance. We strive
to keep covenants made before God and become disciples of Jesus Christ. We can
perfect our discipleship by incorporating the virtues of submissiveness, meekness,
humility, patience, and love (see Mosiah 3:19; Doctrine and Covenants 4:5–6).
Let us not boast in our own wisdom. If we do, we may pay a heavy price and lose
out on many opportunities to progress. In Proverbs we read, “There is a way which
seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death” (Proverbs 14:12).
We should trust the Lord, whose thoughts and ways are higher than ours:
“My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord.
“For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your
ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts” (Isaiah 55:8–9).
If we repent and humbly rely on the Lord, He will bless us so that we may progress
and become the men and women that He expects of us. ◼
