Instructions: Listen to your TA’s instructions.

There are substantially more problems on this worksheet than we expect

to be done in discussion, and your TA might not have you do problems in order. The worksheets are intentionally longer
than will be covered in discussion in order to give students additional practice problems they may use to study. Do not
worry if you do not finish the worksheet :).
You may find the following trig identities useful:
• sin2 (x) + cos2 (x) = 1

• tan2 (x) + 1 = sec2 (x).

• sin2 (x) = 12 (1 − cos(2x))
• cos2 (x) = 12 (1 + cos(2x))

• sin(2x) = 2 sin(x) cos(x)

• sin(A) cos(B) = 1
2 (sin(A − B) + sin(A + B)) (you do NOT need to memorize this identity)
• sin(A) sin(B) = 1
2 (cos(A − B) − cos(A + B)) (you do NOT need to memorize this identity)

1. Compute the following integrals.

Z
(a) 4 sin2 (πx) cos3 (πx) dx.

Z π
2
(b) sin3 (θ) cos5 (θ) dθ.
0

Z
(c) sin2 (t) cos2 (t) dt.

1
2. The three problems above involved powers of sine and cosine. Notice that in the first two problems, at least one of
the powers was odd. On the third problem, both powers were even. As you work through the next several problems,
pay attention to the parity of the powers.
Z π
2
(a) 4 sin9 (θ) cos5 (θ) dθ
0

Z
(b) 8 cos2 (t) dt

Z
(c) sin3 (t) cos6 (t) dt

3. Compute the following integrals. You may need to use these integrals:
Z
• tan(x) dx = ln | sec(x)| + C
Z
• sec(x) = ln | sec(x) + tan(x)| + C

to solve some of the problems.

Z
(a) tan(x) sec3 (x) dx.

2
Z
(b) tan2 (t) sec4 (t) dt.

Z
(c) tan5 (θ) sec3 (θ) dθ

Z
(d) tan3 (w) dw

4. Compute the following integrals. Note: some of these integrals may require other techniques, such as integration
by parts or substitution.
Z
(a) 5 cos2 (x) sin(2x) dx

3
Z
(b) tan2 (x) dx

Z
(c) tan4 (s) ds

Z
(d) 8t cos2 (t) dt

Z
(e) sin(4x) sin(8x) dx

Z
(f) sec3 (t) dt
