FEELINGS: Intensity

7. Complete the reports with the words below.

Do you know why we CAN’T say VERY FURIOUS? Because furious is an extreme
adjective.

For example: She feels angry, a bit angry, quite angry, very angry, extremely
angry, incredibly angry

But you say: She feels absolutely, furious, completely furious.

Have a look at the following examples of adjectives and their extreme. They are
called GRADABLE which means that you can use them with “very” if you want to
intensify them and you can also use them in their comparative and superlative
form.

Example: She is very hungry. Today she is hungrier than yesterday.

Instead STARVING is an extreme adjective and is called NON-GRADABLE so I can make

it more emphatic using the word ABSOLUTELY, COMPLETELY, TOTALLY, UTTERLY OR
ENTIRELY.

Example: She feels absolutely starving/ completely starving. I CAN’T USE starving
in their comparative or superlative form because it’s an extreme adjective.

GRADABLE NON-GRADABLE

happy ecstatic

hungry starving

upset devastating

ugly hideous

wet soaking/ drenched

old ancient

silly ridiculous

clean spotless

So SUMMARIZING we use A BIT, SLIGHTLY, VERY, REASONABLY, EXTREMELY AND INCREDIBLY

to make GRADABLE adjectives more intense.

And we use COMPLETELY, ABSOLUTELY, UTTERLY, TOTALLY, ENTIRELY with NON- GRADABLE
OR EXTREME ADJECTIVES.
