7. Ph.D. Viva-Voce (Ph.D Defence-Online) – Department of Mechanical Engineering:

Thesis Title: Experimental Investigation of a Novel Quaternary Blend

in a CRDI Diesel Engine: Performance, Emission, and Combustion
Characteristics under Varying Operational Parameters
Scholar Name: Bhukya Balaji (Roll No: 719062)
Supervisor: Dr. A. Veeresh Babu (Professor, MED)
Examiner: Prof. E. Anil Kumar, Indian Institute of Technology
Tirupati, MED
Venue: Conference Hall, MED
Date and Time: January 20th, 2025, (Monday), 11:00 AM
Abstract: The rising scarcity and cost of fossil fuels, alongside increasing pollution, drive the
exploration of innovative biofuels like biodiesel. Biodiesel, derived from renewable sources such
as vegetable oils and animal fats, is biodegradable, non-toxic, and reduces greenhouse gas
emissions. Quaternary blends, comprising diesel, vegetable oil, biodiesel, and bio-alcohol, show
promise for replacing 30-40% of diesel in engines. This study investigates quaternary blends in a
single-cylinder CRDI engine, focusing on performance, combustion, and emissions. Mahua
biodiesel (MB) was prepared through esterification and transesterification, achieving 85% yield.
Experimental blends (QB1-QB6) contained diesel (60-70%), cottonseed oil (5%), Mahua biodiesel
(5-25%), and n-butanol (10-25%). QB3 and QB4 (15-20% Mahua biodiesel, 20-15% n-butanol)
outperformed others, increasing brake thermal efficiency by 9%, reducing specific energy
consumption by 29%, and lowering CO (24%) and HC (16%) emissions. At 12% EGR, NOx
emissions decreased by 54%, with a minor increase in HC and CO. Optimal injection pressure (600
bar) further enhanced performance and emissions control. QB3 (D60C5MB15Bu20) demonstrated
superior overall characteristics, offering a sustainable solution for reducing fossil fuel dependence
and emissions without engine modifications. These findings support adopting quaternary blends
for a cleaner, efficient future.

All the interested Faculty, Research Scholars and M. Tech Students are invited to attend
the Ph.D. viva voce presentation.

8. Ph. D. Viva-Voce Examination - Department of Mechanical Engineering:

Thesis Title: In-vitro Bioactivity, Mechanical and Tribological Studies of

Eco-friendly Synthesized Borosilicate Glass for Tissue Engineering
Applications
Scholar Name: Satish Jain and 701923
Supervisors: Dr. Raghavendra Gujjala, Assistant Professor, Department
of Mechanical Engineering and Prof. P. Abdul Azeem, Professor,
Department of Physics
External: Prof. Inderdeep Singh, Professor, MED at Indian Institute
of Technology, Roorkee
Venue: Conference Hall, Mechanical Engineering Department
Date and Time: January 20th 2025, (Monday), 12:00 PM

Abstract: The current research focuses on the synthesis and characterization of bioactive
borosilicate glasses derived from natural waste materials. The study explores different
compositions and characteristics of these glasses, encompassing mechanical strength, tribological
behavior, and in-vitro bioactivity. Various elements, like zirconium, copper, and strontium were
used as dopants to enhance the glass's bioactivity and durability. The results offer valuable insights
into the potential applications of these glasses in the orthopedic and dental fields. Overall, the
research emphasizes the feasibility and effectiveness of utilizing natural waste-derived materials
for developing sustainable and functional bioactive glass.
