THE PROPOSAL

Q. 1. Can you imagine what can happen with Lomov in other way in the play after quarrel with Natalya?
Ans. If Lomov and Natalya quarrelled the other way results would be unfavouable. Lomov and Natalya could not marry. The land
dispute would not resolve in a short time rather it would go on for a long.

Q. 2. Why do find Chubukov clever when Lomov conveys he has come


with a request?
Ans. When Lomov conveys he has come with a request, we find Chubukov clever. First, Chubukov thinks that Lomov has come to
borrow money. Second, he decides that he will not give Lomov any money. Third, Chubukov asks, ‘What is it, my beauty?'

Q. 3. How did Chubukov react at the proposal of Lomov?


Ans. Chubukov reacted joyfully at the proposal of Lomov. Chubukov said, 'Say it again. I am so glad. I am off my balance with joy. I have
always loved you. It has been my continental desire. I have been hoping for it for a long time.

Q. 4. Why is it necessary for Lomov to marry?


Ans. First, it is impossible for Lomov not to marry as he himself says so. Second, he is already 35 years of age as he informs so. It is a
critical age. Third, he wants to lead a quiet and regular life. He suffers from palpitations.

Q. 5. On what proofs does Lomov claim for Oxen Meadows?


Ans. Lomov claims that Oxen Meadows belong to his aunt's grandmother. She
gave the free use of these Meadows in perpetuity to the peasants of Natalya's father's grandfather, in return for which they were to
make bricks for her. They used those Meadows for 40 years and thought those were theirs.

Q. 6. Highlight Natalya's arguments for the claim of Oxen Meadows.


Ans. Natalya argues that her grandfather and great grandfather reckoned that their land extended to Burnt Marsh, which means Oxen
Meadows were theirs. They had the land for nearly three hundred years. They only come to five dessiatins and are worth perhaps 300
roubles.

Q. 7. Why does Chubukov goes to bring Lomov back?


Ans. When Chubukov's daughter learns that Lomov came here to propose to Natalya for marriage, she pressurise her father to bring
Lomov back. She wails and yells. Being a father of a grown up daughter, it was his duty to accept the marriage proposal consented by
his daughter.

Q. 8. Why does Nataliya call Lomov a demon of contradiction?


Ans. Lomov contradicts Nataliya or Chubukov on every point. About Oxen Meadows, he threats to go to court. About dogs, he finds
faults with Nataliya's dog squeezer. Lomov knows that once the land was under dispute and he has visited the Chubukovs for a
marriage proposal.

Q. 9. How did Lomov and Natalya get married?


Ans. Lomov, Natalya and Chubukov were fighting over the superiority of their own dog. Lomov fell unconscious then. Chubukov thought
that he missed the chance. When Lomov got his consciousness, he asked him to marry Natalya.

Q. 10. How do Chubukov and Lomov blame each other in the concluding scene?
Ans. Lomov blames that Chubukov is an intriguer. Everybody knows that his late wife used to beat him. He is not a good hunter.
Chubukov blames that Lomov is under the slipper of his house-keeper. He calls Lomov to be a boy, a pup, a milkshop and a fool. He
warns Lomov to be shut up or he will be shot dead.

Ans. Nataliya is an unmarried girl of 25 years. She is the daughter of Chubukov he is the neighbour of the Lomovs. She covertly loves
Lomov. She is quarrelsome and vicious. She suffers from superiority complex. She wails and yells in adversity. Despit ese, she marries
Lomov.
