MM205-Assignment 1 (1)

The document outlines an assignment involving calculations related to the diffusion of nitrogen and carbon in steel, the drawing of phase diagrams, and the analysis of phase equilibria in binary systems. It includes specific tasks such as calculating time for hardening, diffusion flux, and determining phase fractions in steel and binary systems A and B. Additionally, it requires sketches of phase diagrams and identification of invariant reactions.

MM 205: Assignment 1

1. The surfaces of steel specimens can be hardened by enrichment with nitrogen content.
One route is to maintain a nitrogen-rich atmosphere around a heated steel specimen. If
this atmosphere gives a constant surface N content of 1.53 wt% at 1000oC and the
minimum hardness requires a nitrogen content of 0.25 wt%, calculate the time required
to achieve a hardened depth of 1 μm under these conditions.
Diffusion data of N in γ-Fe: Do = 9.1 x 10-5 m2 s-1, Q = 170 kJ mol-1, R = 8.314 J K-1
mol-1.

2. A steel plate component operates in a carburizing atmosphere on one side and a

decarburizing one on the other at 700oC in a condition of steady state. Calculate the
diffusion flux of carbon through the plate if the concentrations of carbon at positions of
5 and 10 mm beneath the carburizing surface are 1.2 and 0.8 kg m-3, respectively.
Assume Dc diffusion coefficient of 3 x 10-11 m2 s-1.

3. Draw an Fe-Fe3C equilibrium phase diagram and determine the fraction of Fe3C and
ferrite contained in a typical eutectoid carbon steel

4. A region of the Cu-Zn phase diagram is shown below. Determine the invariant
reaction(s) present in this diagram.

5. The following data apply to the binary system of A and B:

Melting point of pure A = 1050°C
Melting point of pure B = 1900°C

1
At 1250°C, the solid solution (containing 50% of B), the solid solution (containing 80%
of B) and liquid (containing 30% of B) are in three-phase equilibrium. At room
temperature, the maximum solubility of B in the phase is 30% and the maximum
solubility of A in the phase is 10%.

(i) Sketch the phase diagram of A and B, showing the phases present in each area
of the diagram.
(ii) What is the reaction that takes place at 1250°C?
(iii) What are the weight fractions of the phases present in a material of overall
composition 75% B, at 1251°C, 1249°C and at room temperature (RT)?
