Sentences – Interchange
(Affirmative to Negative and vice-versa)
Learning Intention
To be able to use targeted grammatical structures meaningfully and appropriately in oral and written
expressions.
Learning Objective:
To transform sentences from one kind to another.
Success Criteria:
✓ Identify the type of sentence by purpose
✓ To be able to transform a sentence from Affirmative sentence to negative sentence and vice versa.
Rules:
Interchange of affirmative to negative sentences and vice-verse
The affirmative sentence can be changed into a negative sentence in different ways:
(a) By putting ‘no’ or ‘not’ before the antonym of a noun, adjective, verb or an adverb:
(e) By the use of certain words as “no sooner… than”, “but” etc.,
(f) Sometimes we can transform the sentence by omitting the words “refrain”, “abstain”, ‘neglect”,
“omit” etc.,
7. ‘As+ adjective + as’ in affirmative becomes ‘not less + adjective... than’ in negative
sentence:
Example:
Affirmative: Rahim is as good as Karim.
Negative: Rahim is not less good than Karim.
Exceptions:
Affirmative: Where there is smoke, there is fire.
Negative: There can be no smoke without fire.
Affirmative: All must die.
Negative: None can escape death.
Affirmative: I come here for the last time.
Negative: I will never come here again.

Change the sentences into affirmative:
