Development and Pattern

The document discusses the concepts of development and pattern in sheet metal and fabrication, explaining how to unfold surfaces into flat patterns for various shapes. It outlines three major types of surface development: parallel line, radial line, and triangulation, providing examples for each method. Additionally, it highlights the applications of these developments in industries, such as in the creation of cereal boxes and air-conditioning ducts.

DEVELOPMENT AND PATTERN,

ITS TYPES, USES AND APPLICATIONS

INTRODUCTION
• Development means unfolding or
unrolling of the surface of an object into
a plane in preparation for bending or
folding into a required shape.

• Pattern is the resulting shape of the laid

out single flat plane. It also called
Template.

DEVELOPMENT ADDED
• Development and pattern are terms used in
sheet metal and fabrication work.

•The development of a surface illustrates how

to get a pattern of particular shape and how it
should look.
•Apart from aiding in the preparation for
bending and folding of materials, development
also assists in getting the pattern that sheet
metal or material shall be cut into for the
desire shape from the object picture/drawing.
Surface developments are used in many
areas in different industries.
Some of the objects requiring developments
are:
Cereal Boxes,
Tool Boxes,
Funnels,
Air-conditioning Ducts, And
Simple Mail Boxes.
Proper pattern and development design can also aid
in judicious use of the labour and material
Three major kinds of surface
development are:
1. Parallel line developments: are used
for objects having parallel fold lines,
Figure 1.
2. Radial line developments: are used for
those whose fold lines radiate from one
point.
3. Triangulation developments: are the
development processes of breaking up an
object into series of triangular plane
surfaces.
