Characteristics of Recreation
It is possible to mention some of the basic features of recreation accepted by many researchers. The
main features of recreation are (Hazar, 2003; Jensen and Guthrie, 2006; Karaküçük, 2008; McLean, Hurd and
Rogers, 2008; Hacıoğlu et al., 2009):
 Recreation activities are voluntary activities which require voluntary participation, which are selected
according to request and interest, and which people attend in their leisure time.
 There should be no obligation to continue and participate in recreational activities.
 Recreational activities can be applied in any season and climate conditions with all kinds of open or
closed areas.
 Recreation should be in accordance with the traditions, moral and spiritual values of society and should
not contradict the social values.
 Recreation is an experience resulting from participation in recreational activities and includes a wide
range of activities that provide pleasure and joy. · Recreation requires an activity and participants select
the time, type of activity, and location themselves.
 Recreation has a purpose for each person and human needs should be taken into consideration in
determining the activities.
 Recreation gives a sense of freedom and focuses on the needs of people to achieve success, to prove
themselves, to express their personality, to be appreciated, to gain social status, to acquire new
experiences.
 Recreation allows an interest in the second or more activities to be carried out when performing an
activity.
 Recreation action can be carried out in organized or unorganized places either with planned or
unplanned, skillful persons or with persons who do not have skills.
