various learning styles
various learning styles
Visual learners: The visual learners learn by analyzing pictures, graphs or maps more easily than
by reading. Flow charts, mind maps and diagrams help them in learning more effectively.
Video recordings and animations help them learn tough concepts easily. They see patterns in
data and sort things more easily. They find the odd ones in complicated patterns effortlessly.
3. Kinesthetic Learners
These types of learners learn by doing. They are creative learners and good at imagining 3D
concepts. They prefer to learn actively, more by drawing pictures, maps or graphs and by
getting involved in experimenting and making models. They like to walk while studying rather
than sitting on the chair.
Explain the multiple intelligences theory. How will you use this information when you are
tutoring?
According to Howard Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences, the approach to learning must
be multiple and we should not employ only one method based on learning styles. Everybody
learns differently but to some extent by all different methods. So for effective teaching visual,
auditory and kinesthetic learners should be involved equally and so all tools should be engaged
at the same time.
What information did you find most applicable and useful? Explain why.
Multiple intelligence theory has made me more aware of the various intelligences in us.I will try
to find out what makes the tutee more happy if given an option to read a book, listen to a
lecture or see a video or solve a puzzle? I will ask simple questions during the session to
understand the nature of the learner. Identifying the type of learning in the tutee will help me
tune my tutoring style to better help the tutee. Relying on only one method may not be a good
idea so, I will be more prepared to use all learning methods at the same time I.e., speak and
write and use pictures during the tutoring session
.
Analyze your own learning style. How will this information help you in your own courses and
when you are tutoring?
After reading the learning style I understood that I am a kinesthetic learner so I should use
models to learn chemistry and I should go towards research as my career. But after reading
through Howard Gardner’s theory I now am convinced that I also need to listen carefully in the
class and go through the textbook for graphs and flowcharts if I aim to score more than what I
do now.
