The water cycle, also known as the hydrologic cycle, is the continuous
movement of water on Earth in different forms. It is the cycle of processes by
which water circulates between the oceans, atmosphere and land. These
processes include :evaporation, condensation, precipitation, runoff and
collection.
Evaporation
Evaporation is the process by which water changes from a liquid to a gas.It is
where water enters the atmosphere as water vapor. This process occurs
when the heat from the sun heats up bodies of water like oceans, lakes, and
rivers, as well as from moist surfaces on land, causing the water molecules to
vibrate rapidly, eventually escaping into the atmosphere as water vapor.
Evaporation is a very important part of the water cycle as it transfers water
from the earth to the sky.
Condensation
Condensation refers to the process in which water vapor turns back into a
liquid. This process occurs as water vapor in the air encounters a cool surface
or colder gasses, or when the air is cooled to its dew point or becomes
saturated with water vapor.Condensation is responsible for the formation of
clouds.Clouds are formed when water vapor turns into liquid water droplets.
These water droplets form on tiny particles, like dust, that are floating in the
air. When more water condenses on these particles than evaporates from
them, clouds form and grow. These factors make condensation an essential
part of the water cycle.
Precipitation
Sleet Hail
Runoff
Runoff is the movement of water over the surface of land, or in some cases
through it. In this process water moves downhill, through channels as small as a
brook and as large as a river. From there, the water will enter a pond, lake, or
ocean. Runoff occurs perennially (that is, daily throughout the year) or
ephemerally (that is, periodically during a year), depending on how much
precipitation is falling in a specific community from day to day.
Collection
The water cycle involves the exchange of energy, which leads to temperature changes. When
water evaporates, it takes up energy from its surroundings and cools the environment. When
it condenses, it releases energy and warms the environment. These heat exchanges influence
climate.
The evaporative phase of the cycle purifies water, causing salts and other solids picked up
during the cycle to be left behind, and then the condensation phase in the atmosphere
replenishes the land with freshwater. The flow of liquid water and ice transports minerals
across the globe. It is also involved in reshaping the geological features of the Earth, through
processes including erosion and sedimentation. The water cycle is also essential for the
maintenance of most life and ecosystems on the planet.
All in all ,the processes of the water cycle complement each other in such a way whereby the
water rises from the oceans, rivers, ponds etc. As evaporation and the evaporated water that
changed into gas(water vapor) turns back into a liquid by the process of condensation and
falls to the earth's surface as rain, snow, hail or sleet by the process of precipitation. The
precipitated water then runs off into rivers, ponds, oceans etc by the process of runoff ,where
it is then collected and the cycle goes on and on continuously.
The water cycle is a vital process that enables the availability of water for all
living organisms and regulates weather patterns on our planet . The water
cycle has several benefits for organisms in the environment, such as:
supply of fresh water for all living organisms 1. This is essential for the
survival of plants and animals, as they require water to carry out their
biological processes.
● Regulation of temperature: The water cycle helps regulate the
All in all the water cycle is essential for maintaining a healthy environment
that supports the growth and survival of all living organisms.
