i) Introduction to the Task

Mind Map

As you can see from the mind map, there are a lot of potential aspects that go into
making a toy for young children, some notable ones include educational aspect, value,
safety, material, and etc. I had tried to list as many things I can do. From the materials
such as wood, plastic, rubber, paper, cloth and more to how safe the toy can be to
children is important to what a child needs to expand their educational knowledge which
is why the mentioned materials are shown.

Introduction to the Task
The problem that we are facing and that we are trying to combat is that students in
schools have issues when it comes to the education that comes towards them, and the
way that teachers or the schooling system does that. Some other problems include
students not having fun during class, which is the opinion that nearly all students have
had at least once. This problem is mainly for elementary students, particularly ones who
are between G1 - G3. This would not exactly apply for older kids since our version of
“educational toy” would be something like kahoot and we can not exactly make
something as complex in such a short amount of time, resources, and knowledge. So the
age range for this product would be 8 years old to 10 years old. This issue is only
occurring in schools and will be combatted in schools only. This issue could also apply if
you are home schooled however most if not all the population go to schools so we will be
focusing on that demographic. When students get bored in class, this allows the student
to be a whole lot more disinterested in whatever subject the teacher is teaching. Wether
that be the subject itself being a dull topic or the way the teacher brings this topic to the
minds of youths. The reasons why I would have to design my own toy for these children is
to combat this very issue. See, toys are played by children however do not have much
educational value towards them. So my creation will involve fun, and will be educational
which is the best combo for children of any age.
In short, we will design our own toy for young children in where it has to be
educational and creative from our own ideas and imagination. Wether that would be a
puzzle, or a fun way of bringing school subjects such as math and science for instance to
a young child.

Key Concept: Creativity

This key concept is very important in this unit because we will be creating something that
will come from our imagination and ideas in which we can express this creativity of ours in
the design process. We are not given any blueprint on what we HAVE to do with a select
amount of materials that the school has given us, but we can make our own thing with
much lesser limitations then compared to other units.

Related Concept: Innovation and Invention

This related concept is crucial in this unit because it puts what we have to fully do in 2
words, innovating and creating. Innovating, because we are using our creative ideas and
providing good to a community and audience. Invention because we use those ideas and
creativity to put into reality by creating.

Global Context: Scienti c and Technical Innovation (systems and processes to develop
solutions)
This global context is important much like the importance of the related concept. In terms
of all the global contexts, this one ts our unit the most out of all of them. The word
“technical” within the global context insinuates that we are making something physical
and or technical where it involves multiple materials and parts.

Inquiry Questions:

• Factual Questions:
1. What is a learning aided toy?
A toy or plaything that is expressly made to improve a child's educational or
developmental experience is referred to as a learning-aided toy. These toys are made with

the goal of encouraging learning and skill development while supplying amusement and
engagement for kids.
2. What systems and methods are needed to design and produce a learning-aided
toy?
A variety of technologies and techniques are combined throughout the design and
production of a learning-assisted toy. They include topics like safety, user-centric design,
research and content production, educational value, and more.

• Conceptual Questions:
3. How can we use innovation and creativity to design products?
We can use innovation and creativity to design products by using our own creativity and
imagination to design our own little toy that can be used for good educational purposes.
4. How do children learn through educational toys?
Children can learn various subjects through educational toys. Wether that is math,
English, science, languages, arts, and more. We will be creating a toy for children that will
use these factors mentioned (one of them) and will the topic that will be taught.

• Debatable Questions (TOK connection):

5. Are learning aided toys a fact or ction?
Learning aided toys are a fact. There have been multiple done in this very class by prior
grades and there are also other students that have showed their creations and toys to
children before.

Research Evidence #1
Research question: What is a learning aided toy?
A learning aided toy is a toy that can be used in
school and implemented to be a learning toy that kids
use to learn a whole host of di erent subjects. A
learning aided toy can be either mostly subject based
so interacting games with math or English for
example. Some other toys such as lego are more of
toys then educational but are still good for a young
child to build their creativity, however lego does not
classify as a learning aided toy. Bright colours, u y
materials, and glori ed eye candy for young children
is good for them to be fun and interactive whilst
enhancing the kid’s memory skills as well as critical
thinking skills. Usually educational toys are used
within the ages of 7 to 11, when you get to older ages
you more of use tools rather then educational toys.
An educational toy can more or less make learning fun, and that is why educational toys
are made in the rst place.

Research Evidence #2
Research question: What materials will be used?

Toys are made up of a whole host of di erent kinds of

materials. Some just made up of 1 material, and some
other complex toys made up of multiple materials
combined together. A educational toy has to be simple
so therefore it is likely to use around 1 - 2 materials
maximum all though you can use more then just one
materials if you wanted to. Throughout time passed
there has been multiple materials that have been put into
toys, some harmful and some that are revolutionised to
be used more safely and more e ectively to not only
accrue goods, but also to make them.

engineering-materials/content-section-1.1

Research Evidence #3
Research question: What techniques will be used?
Starting with the materials and tools that I
will be using, I will use what is mentioned in
the video. One of the tools that was
mentioned in the video was the bandsaw
which is used to cut precise wood markings
which will be useful in case I need to
incorporate anything wood related to my toy.
Another piece of equipment I can used is the
sewing machine. Since I mentioned before
that I could use fabric or any other similar
material in my toy, I could stitch up a little
design made out of a speci c fabric that I
can use the sewing machines for and make
whatever I designed. Sanding is also another technique that I believe will be the MOST
prevalent in my design making process. Since safety is a important factor in my toy, I will
be heavily sanding down my toy so no sharp bits stick out and make my toy overall just
comfortable to hold. There are more techniques that I could mention and I will use in my
criterion C, which I might mention later on in Criterion B for instance.

Research Topic #4
Research question: What do children enjoy learning about?
When it comes to what children enjoy learning
about, it can be a number of di erent things
especially when they are young. Family is one of
them and can be interesting to young children when
you ask them. If you perhaps ask a child about their
siblings for example, they will enjoy comparing
which of their siblings is the tallest, fattest, happiest,
saddest, angrier, prettiest, and most ideal. Pets is

another subject that kids nd interesting. Comparing several pets or animals with them.
Show a cat ash card and a dog ash card, then ask, "Which is bigger?" Which is more
welcoming? "Which smells worse?”, and etc. There are way more easily thinkable
subjects that kids enjoy and that will be incorporated into the nal toy.

Research Topic #5
Research question: What kinds of toys are most enjoyable to play with?

When it comes to children, toys are

the most recurring topic that comes
when suggesting what they like to
spend their time doing, take
toddlers for example. Boxes,
building blocks, pegs, buckets and
containers, as well as dress-up
clothes, are all favourites among
toddlers. Toddlers also like playing
simple musical instruments that
they can pound and shake, such a
drum constructed of a wooden
spoon and an upside-down pot.
Older kids frequently choose games
and toys that encourage exploration, problem-solving, and the use of the senses and
creativity. This could contain tools for cooking, making costumes, manufacturing paper
aeroplanes, going on treasure hunts, and etc.

0spoon.
S
Research Topic #6
Research question: What theme can be best?
There are a lot of themes to look at,
especially when talking about toys. You
could have an ocean theme, or pink
barbie theme, or a rainbow for example.
Colour has a lot to do with theme and is
partly why the theme is it’s own separate
thing, it is just the subject of the theme
that separates it from the rest. All of
those examples I had listed had a colour
and speci c topic tied to it, which is
essentially what a theme is (in term of
themes for children). As for my theme, I
would say that a mix of vibrant and child
friendly topic would be ideal, since having a dark theme and boring and bland colour tied
to that would NOT be kid friendly.

iii) Existing products

Existing Product #1
This product is a decent product to start with. The
idea of it is very, very simple. It consists of a
magnetic whiteboard and a wooden border
attached around it. The whiteboard is mounted on
this other wood base where it is a compartment
for the magnetic toys to be kept. Based on what
is in the box, the subjects that this educational toy
teaches are English and math. It is rather a smart
and simple idea for an educational toy. If you can
notice, there also seems to be wooden studs
sticking out from the inner sides of the base which
act as the holder for the whiteboard to be
propped up from, which is a nice addition. This
existing products does have problems though and
is not all great too. There is a safety concern
surrounding the wooden frames and base which
could be sharp and pointy for the young child, perhaps more sanding could be better.

Pros Cons
- Nice materials, rounded edges and - Handle joint considered as a safety point,
versatile base ngers could get caught
- Very space e cient and e ective
- Wide range of subjects to learn

Existing Product #2
This toy is actually very cool. The design
is nice and clean, with a wooden base
and handle that is original to itself. The
materials used is minimal yet tting, that
being wood, plastic, paper stickers, etc.
There is a handle connected to the mid
part of the board which bends to stand
itself into a position where it is better to
use. The handle likely rotates up and
becomes holdable to carry around
which makes this toy portable. There is
also multiple things you can do on the
board in terms of the subjects and mini
games. There is math, English, and
more which coincide into one big board
all together. Since the movement of each
area seems fun to the actual child, this educational toy could be good for them to learn
and study to.

Ayyan Sajid August 24th 2023

Pros Cons
- Simple idea, executed nicely and neatly - Safety concern, the edges of the sides
seem sharp or aren’t sanded enough
- Ergonomic design, is able to prop itself
up from various distances
- Teaches two subjects to the child using it
- Lightweight and portable
Existing Product #3
This existing product is rather simple but has a
interesting aspect to it. It goes by using a stick with a
string attached to the end, and a piece of magnet
attached to that end of the string. The shing rod (in
this sense) is supposed to be lowered down into the
bucket of these colourful and circular chips which
contains words on them where you are supposed to
latch onto with the rod, essentially like you are shing.
I like the overall idea behind this toy considering it is
like shing and maybe their client said that they like
shes and oceans so maybe this could imply within
that type of context however I see some cons and
pros with this. There seems to be a lot of chips inside
the container and if you are lowering your rod and
magnetically attaching the chips, then you are only
going to get the ones on top, never the ones at the bottom. Speaking of the chips, they
are colourful in a sense and contain vibrant colours to attract children’s attention to what’s
inside. Decent toy overall.
Pros Cons
- Thoughtful, fun theme and idea; shing, - Restricted to the chips on top, because
ocean, sh of magnetic hook
- Straightforward ( sh out the words using - Top edge of container looks 3D printed
the shing rod) and somewhat sharp, could be a safety
hazard

Existing products #4

The nal existing product consists of what

looks to be a rolling set of wheels with
letters labelled onto the wheels
themselves. This seems like a nice idea.
You would have to circle the wheels in a
speci c way to form words and phrases.
There are problems with this, one for
example is the fact that there are a lot of
letters on one wheel and there are 12
wheels in total would make trying to form
a 12 letter word not that much fun and
Design 9 Dr Sajid
fi
fi
fi
fi

fi
fi

fi
Ayyan Sajid August 24th 2023
frustrating. I also do not think 1st graders are capable yet of forming and thinking of such
words since it is out of reach from their vocabulary. Another issue with this toy is that it
LOOKS boring and could get old very easily to especially a child when their sense of
boredom is more vast then for example ours. The font is what makes this that way since it
looks to be normal Helvetica or any other universal font which seems dull, alongside the
colour of the font is dull too. This seems like a nice idea however but was not executed
too well in my opinion.
Pros Cons
- Colourful, a vibrant green colour all - Could get boring very quickly, does not
throughout give much of a “toy” feeling
- Creative idea - Too complex for a 1st grader
- Font of the wheels very uninteresting, a
dull brown colour

iv) Research Analyses and Design Brief

Research analyses
From the research that I had done, I can deduce I have learnt more of what a
educational toy should and should not have, along with some other smaller things that I
need too. From my research, I learnt that there are some good things and not so good
things to consider whilst making my product for the children.
First o , starting from the existing products is safety. Safety is important since our target
demographic will be 1st graders and they can get hurt easily. One good way to prevent
this for example would be to sand o any sharper wooden edges, or deal with plastic
points that would come from the toy itself. Usually this would be easy to do and I just
need to spot my toy to see if my toy ts any of these strands, so I will change it going
forward.
Another thing that I had noticed in the existing products phase was the creative aspect of
the entire toys. See, a toy needs to be distinguishable from other toys so it needs to have
a creative and unique aspect going for it. This could either be wheels put on a bar with
letters on them which arrange into words, or a shing game where you sh out chips with
words whilst using a rod. Something like this is what I want to incorporate into my design
and is something that I have found within these products.
My research mainly consisted of what children like and how I can present my toy in a safe
and educational matter. I simply had researched what toys children of around 6 to 8 like,
what educational subjects I can teach, what themes will t best, what techniques I will be
using whilst making the product, and more.

Design Brief
For our task, we are going to make a educational toy for grade 1 students and will
be educating them through toys that we make. This unit essentially consists of the
process of making toys through a whole host of di erent materials in which we will use to
make our nal product. After we make our product, we will go back to the rst graders
and present our toys to them. That is mostly what we will be doing in this unit. The
materials that will be used within this unit is a lot. The primary ones will consist of wood,
plastic, acrylic plastic, wool, fabrics, felt, velcro, magnets, and softer materials such as
rubber alongside a lot more. The theme for my product will be a vibrant and colourful
theme. I want my product to be very appealing to the child’s eye so I feel like if I make my

educational toy colourful that I would make my toy more fun to play with. Either that or an
ocean themed toy could work too. My target audience for the educational toy will be
grade 1 students. Grade 1 children are the perfect balance of not too young but also not
too old but either the way goes, it is young children that we are working with and it will
mostly appease to the 5 - 7 year old demographic. The tools that I would be using in this
unit was mentioned alongside the research band and consists of a designing 3D software
(either AutoCad or any other works well too), scissors, foam board knife, band saw, sand
paper, hot glue, hot glue gun, laser cutter, 3D printer, and a lot more. This project will take
me a around a month maximum to complete all together from start to nish. This will
include collecting the materials to making last minute touches and nishes to the product
to make it seem more elegant. For the aesthetic, I want it to match with the theme so it
will be a cartoony aesthetic with a light bluish beach theme which is what I want for the
product. What my toy will be learning is two main things, English (spelling) and
mathematics. I want these two speci cally because it would be the easiest to integrate
within my product and would not take up too much time so I want to go with these two
subjects.

Materials - what - The materials that I will be using stems from the basic resources such as
resources will be used to wood, plastic, acrylic plastic, fabric, and more which everyone thinks of

- Wood: wood is a strong and durable materials that is sleek and
easy to work with. With the help from the scroll saw, sandpaper,
and a variety of other tools which will aid me.
- Plastic: all though a easy and simple tool to make, it is not really
easy to work with compared to wood, however making what you
need is so much more easier with a 3D printer for instance.
- Cloth/fabric: when knowing the right techniques of how to work
with fabric (which is pretty easy), it can actually supply as a simple
and elegant way to t my theme into the product.
- Magnets: magnets pose as a not a manufacturing resource but
can be added to already existing things to spice them up. A
magnetic letter could be sticked onto a board to make educating
much easier for example.
- Other: if I need other materials that are not on this list, I can use
them and then mention them later on that I did.

Colours - what colours - More of vibrant colours would be nice

will you be incorporating - Colours that add to the theme and make the educational toy product
within the toy? look eye catching is a detail that I believe is important and that should be
considered when looking to make a toy. Colours such as blue, yellow,
green, red, orange can be examples of colours that are suitable to use.
- Some colours that I might not use for example would be black, brown,
grey, and some more would be too dull to use.

Form - is the product - The form of the product has to relate to the safety of the toy as well. The
going to be round, edged, form will likely be a rounded square shape or a rectangular one. When I get
rectangular, spherical, to the design ideas and criterion C I will know for sure, but for now I want to

Safety - is the product - For my audience (which is grade 1 students), it is very important to
safe for the audience? consider safety. You could have a really good toy that does it’s job and
teaches students however if it is unsafe to use and has sharp edges then
it can get di cult to apply that product any further.
- Be sure to keep any sharp or ridged objects and corners clean and
sanded.

Theme - what will the toy - An ocean theme for my toy would be nice since not only is that what I

basic words that go along with my theme so it makes things interesting.
- For math, I will be adding simple addition and maybe subtraction
problems but not multiplication or division since I believe they did not get
to that stage yet.

Justi cation of Speci cations

My speci cation has discussed multiple ideas on what my product should contain and
have in order to be the best and most perfect it can be. It will of course not be all that
perfect since I likely won’t be following this speci cation all throughout however it will still
just linger on the back of my mind of what my product should be, which is why the
speci cations exist. Alongside that, I have mentioned a number of subjects within my
speci cations that would be appropriate within my actual nal product. The most
important in my opinion are materials, colour, safety, and educational aspect. Without one
of those components, there would not be any good educational toy around and is
precisely why I believe that these speci cations are important in the rst place.

ii) Design Ideas

Sketches

Design 9 Dr Sajid

Design Idea #1
This design idea has a couple
features that I do like. This was
something that I had in mind
since the beginning of this unit
because it was probably the
most simple and straightforward
thing I could make. The design
idea itself is a whiteboard that
stands up by itself and can have
magnetic letters as well as
numbers attached to it. Some
symbols such as multiplication
and division signs can also be
added if I do decide to choose
this design idea. The corners of
the board are sealed with a
rubberised edge that can be safer for children and be easier to prop up if the stand is
removed from the whiteboard. There is also a small black marker and whiteboard eraser
that comes with this incase anything needs to be written on the board itself. Those are
actually some of the pros, however the product does contain less work from the
educational toy itself and rather comes o as a whiteboard instead of a “toy” which sets
this design idea back.
Pros Cons
- Easy to use; straightforward - Not much of a toy
- Eye catching, with colourful letters and - Educational aspect is present, however
numbers to accompany the child may do most of the work
- Safe to use, with corners being sealed
with rubber

Design Idea #2
This design idea has been made a
countless number of times for
children that are actually quite
younger then the 1st graders that we
are going to. Nonetheless, it is still
teaching something and does it’s job
quite e ectively. For starters, the
educational aspect is shapes and
geometry which is a good subject
for 1st graders. The box itself is
hallow on the inside, tting the
shapes that will t into the speci c
holes. This will enhance the child’s
technical skills by applying

knowledge to nd the correct shapes to add into the box. There is a lot of attempts for
trial and error, meaning the child can just try again once they got their shapes wrong. The
box has a sort of opening mechanism from the bottom to get the shapes out once all
shapes have been added. All though not all shapes could t in the box depending on size,
which could get really complicated fast. This could also take a decent amount of time to
actually accomplish successfully which is an issue.

Pros Cons
- Easy concept, and fun for the child itself - Shapes could be di cult to t in the box
to play with all at once
- Teaches a usually fun subject and good - Size limitations and maximum size is an
for young children especially issue for intended uses
- Can allow child to enhance their technical
skills to solve problems

Design Idea #3
This design idea is also already
been done before multiple times
however this type of toy is not
even a toy but an actual tool that
was once used a long time ago
as a computer/calculator. This
tool was used to count and is a
good and easy way to be
understood by children. Simply
moving the beads from one side
to another is the intended way to
use this toy and is very easy to
make as well as to use. Some
issues that might arise is the
strings since they could snap at
any moment while counting and
potentially hurt the child which is not a good thing. So a need for a thicker string that
would not cause much damage when snapping and a decent sanded wooden frames
would be good for the child.

Pros Cons

- Easy concept, and simple for the child to - String endurance and the potential for
use them to snap at any moment

- Easy to make and produce with minimal - Not fully safe and appropriate for the
time taken overall child to use

Design Idea #4

This design idea may be one of my

favourites or my most favourites out
of all the design ideas since it’s a
simple concept that incorporates
more of the good things from the
other design ideas and puts them
into one. Very similar idea to the
shape box (design idea #2) but just
done more e ciently. For starters
the box turned more into a board
which heavily simpli es the size
problem that existed in the second
design idea. There are also multiple
shapes of di erent unique edges
that come with the board. The toy works in a sense where you insert the 3D shapes
(separate from board) into the correct spot. This teaches geometry to the child and is a
good exercise to quickly remember shapes.

Pros Cons
- Teaches a good subject for young - Digging shapes into 3D board is possibly
children (geometry), and it is not too tricky
complicated
- Easier to make and better for size
measuring
- Can t multiple unique shapes onto the
board
- Colourful as well as eye catching

iii) Chosen Design

Justi cation of Chosen Design

The reason that I chose this speci c design idea is because it takes all or most of the
good things from the other design ideas and puts them in one. The concept of design
idea #2, the simplicity of the toy, the di erent shapes being used, its all simple for the
child and for me because the design making process will be easier to do. This design is
3d, and so will be a bit deep but not too deep which will act as a placeholder for the
shapes to be placed in. The shapes are also easier to make except the exception of the
clover shape. It is a simple concept, and a simple process of how I will make this. I am
happy of this decision and this will also make my 3D side, top, bottom, etc sketches a lot
easier too.
