(14 Marks)
Dolphins are regarded as the friendliest creatures in the sea and stories of them
helping drowning sailors have been common since Roman times. The more we learn
about dolphins, the more we realise that their society is more complex than people
previously imagined. They look after other dolphins when they are ill, care for sick
mothers and protect the weakest in the community, as we do. Some scientists have
suggested that dolphins have a language, but it is much more probable that they
communicate with each other without needing words. Could any of these mammals
be more intelligent than man? Certainly, the most common argument in favour of
man's superiority over them that we can kill them more easily than they can kill us is
the least satisfactory. On the contrary, the more we discover about these remarkable
creatures, the less we appear superior when we destroy them.
i. Write down the summary of the passage.
Dolphins have been considered the friendliest to man since Roman Times. They are
a complex society as they came from their community members. The scientists differ
in opinion whether they have a language or not. It is not good for the human beings
to kill the dolphins as it does not prove man to be superior.
ii. Is the writer sure that Dolphins have a language? Support your answer from the text.
No, the writer is not sure as he himself/ herself states difference of opinion among
the experts.
iii. What is the message contained in the concluding sentence (last sentence)?
We should not kill dolphins./ We should safe dolphins.
iv. How are dolphins a complex society?
Dolphins are a complex society because they are social like human beings. They
care for sick and weak in their community.

This Sea that bares her bosom to the moon;
The winds that will be howling at all hours,
And are up-gathered now like sleeping flowers;
For this, for everything, we are out of tune;

hoping he would relent. I pleaded all the way, telling him how sorry I was, but he
simply ignored me, continuing on silently, thoughtfully and painfully.

and sad and keep the suspense. The anti-climax is also well organized and the
