The report discusses engine types and classifications, focusing on how engines create torque and their various configurations. It details two main types of engines: piston and rotary, with an emphasis on the piston engine's configurations, including inline, flat, V type, and VR/W type engines. The document highlights the advantages of piston engines over rotary engines, such as longevity and lower emissions.

Engines create torque to drive the vehicle and power the accessories. Engines come in a variety of shapes and sizes, but they all create torque. Engines are classified by the following: • Type • Cylinder arrangement • Number of cylinders/rotors Total engine displacement in cubic inches, cubic centimeters, or liters Each of these factors affects the torgue that the endine produces Two common types of engines are piston and rotary. The piston engine uses cylindrical pistons that move up and down in cylinder bores. The rotary engine uses a roughly triangular rotor that turns inside a roughly oval chamber. Most automotive engines are of the piston type rather than the less common rotary type. This is because piston engines have a longer life and produce fewer emissions. I. Piston Engines - In a piston engine, the way engine cylinders are arranged is called the engine configuration. Multi-cylinder internal combustion engines are produced in four common configurations: 1. Inline or Straight engine Number of cylinders – three or four to six cylinders (because they produce good amount of power wth great fuel efficiency Engine size - An inline-4 engine with a size of 2.0 liters means the total displacement of all four cylinders adds up to 2.0 liters. An inline-6 engine could be something like 3.0 liters or more, depending on the cylinder size and bore. Cylinder arrangement - laid in straight (most commonly used layout for engines we see in cars and motorcycles)
2. Flat/Boxer Type Engine/ Horizontally
Opposed Engine Number of cylinders - four and six cylinder Engine size - Subaru boxer engine - 2.5 liters. Porsche 911 - 3.0 liters or more Cylinder arrangement - 180 degrees apart from each side 3. V Type Engine Numbers of Cylinders - two to twelve cylinders Cylinder Arrangement - sitting side by side in v arrangement Engine size - Harley-Davidson motorcycle - 1,200 cc, V6 engine - 3.5 liters, V8 engine - 5.0 liters
4. VR and W Type Engine
Numbers of Cylinders - two to twelve cylinders Cylinder Arrangement - V type - narrow angle V, W type - two narrow angle V Engine size - VR 5 engine - 2.3 liters, W12 engine - 6.0 liters
II. Rotary Engine
Do not use pistons that slides back and forth Has three combustions for each rotation of the rotor. As the rotor turns, it carries the air-fuel mixture around the chambers.
