• Differentiates language used in academic
texts from various disciplines;
• Uses knowledge of text structure to glean
the information he/she needs;
• Uses various techniques in summarizing a
variety of academic texts;
• Writes a precis/abstract/summary of texts
in the various disciplines.
• Summarizing reduces a text to its main idea and necessary information.

• It is a mixture of reducing a long text to a short text and selecting relevant


information.

• A good summary shows that you have understood the text.


• Summarizing helps you understand and learn important information by
reducing the text to its key ideas.

• The primary purpose of a summary is to give an accurate, objective


representation of what the work says.

• It is a useful study tool as well as good writing practice.


To the untrained eye, a summary and a paraphrase may look alike.
However, there are differences.

• shorter than the original text • shorter or longer than the original text

• eliminates details, examples, and • describes the original text in different


supporting points words and does not leave out details
