10 Spring Constant (9)

The document outlines an experiment to determine the spring constant of a helical spring using a weight hanger and slotted weights. It describes the apparatus, principle, formula, and procedure for measuring the extension of the spring under varying loads, culminating in plotting a graph to find the spring constant. The result is expressed as K = ____________ N/m.

SPRING CONSTANT
Aim: To find the force constant of a given spring.

Apparatus: Helical spring, weight hanger, slotted weights, stand and clamp, scale and stop clock.

Principle: When a loaded helical spring is allowed to execute oscillations.

a) The restoring force is directly proportional to extension in it.

−𝐅
Formula: Spring constant 𝐊 =  Nm-1

F ⇒ mg ⇒ weight applied

 ⇒ Extension of the wire (spring)

Procedure:

(a) Experimental arrangement is as shown in the fig.

(b) A suitable load is applied in increasing order.
(c) The corresponding extension of the spring is noted on scale.
(d) The graph of F against  is plotted.
(e) Slope of the graph represents the spring constant of the wire.

Tabular column:

Graph scale:-  – axis 1 cm = m

y – axis 1 cm = N

Result: Spring constant of the spring K = ____________ N/m.
