Solid Modelling Fundamentals

Engineering Drawing
MEB1063
January 2021 Semester

AutoCAD2020
Learning Outcomes
• At the end of this topic, you should be able
to
– Identify the basics of solid modelling.
– Learn about exploded views in Engineering
drawing.
– Describe assembly drawings, their differences
with detail drawings
3D Modelling
• The AutoCAD program has three different 3D modeling
toolsets:
– Surfaces – industrial design
– Solids - Engineering
– Meshes – games and movies
• Yet AutoCAD allows you to pick the best tool for the job
no matter what type of work you do so that you can find
the best solutions for your models.

Coordinates System
• World Coordinates System (WCS)
A fixed system, where all drawings are
defined with X,Y,Z coordinates
measured from 0,0,0 origin

• User Coordinates System (UCS)

A movable system, where you can
move a temporary origin to any location

Important : Why Move the UCS?

Object that is drawn will always be parallel
to the XY plane

Extrusion Method
• Often be used to create complex 3-D solid
• Extrude only on a closed 2-D shape
(Polylines, circles, polygon, rectangles, eclipse etc.)
• Extrusion in Z-axis
(Remember : Object that is drawn will always be parallel to the XY plane)

1) Draw a 2-D
shape on XY
plane

2) Extrude in Z-
axis direction

What is a Primitive Solid?
A primitive solid is a ‘building block' that you can use to work with in 3D. Rather than
extruding or revolving an object, AutoCAD has some basic 3D shape commands at
your disposal. From these basic primitives, you can start building your 3D models.

AutoCAD 3D Commands - Revolve, Sweep, Loft, Helix

Sweep
Creates a solid by sweeping a profile along an open or
closed 2D or 3D path.
Needs an object profile and path for sweep.
Loft
Creates a solid based on a series of cross sections.
Needs an object profile with an option of cross section and
guide.

Helix
Creates a helical object
Requires number of turns, twist direction, center point of
Open base, top radius, helix height and Turns.
