LEARNING PACKAGE FOR PRACTICAL RESEARCH 1

FIRST QUARTER - LESSON 3 & 4

Destination 3 - Identifying the Inquiry and Stating the Problem

Most Essential Learning Competencies:

At the end of the lesson the learner should be able to a) designs a research project related to daily life,
b) writes a research title, c) provides the justifications/reasons for conducting the research, d) states research
question, e) indicates scope and delimitation of research, f) cites benefits and beneficiaries of research and g)
presents written statement of the problem.
I. Introduction
Wow! This is a challenging destination. However, with the basics that you have learned from the
previous lessons, I’m sure you are equipped enough to face such challenges. Always remember that the
research that you will be conducting must be in the area of your interest so that you will enjoy what you will be
doing. Start with identifying the inquiry. Within the area of interest, find a problem that needs a solution or just
simply look around and think of families within the community or situations of certain group of people who have
experienced a certain phenomenon that makes you interested with. I just want to reiterate that it must be within
the field of your interest. Hahaha! But before you start thinking of the topic and title of your research, I have
prepared an initial activity for you.

II. Development

Well, how did you find the first activity? We’re you able to get perfect score? If yes, I congratulate you
for that; If not, then we need to search for the gems of knowledge to be able to perfectly answer the post-test.
Read and take note of important terms and statements which will equip you for further testing. This journey will
take us to the initial landing site which will give us an idea of what research is all about.
Attributes of a Good Title
Before we get to the actual task of describing how a title should be written, let us describe the role that
the titles are expected to play. Titles are expected to describe the content of the paper, so that readers can
have an idea about what the paper is about and take the decision regarding reading it. A title should help
differentiate that particular article from other papers on the topic. Titles should catch and hold readers’
attention, thereby enticing them to read the entire paper (Bavdekar, 2016). In short, a good title indicates
emphasis, keywords and impact.
The following are Attributes of a Good Title:
1. Informs the reader accurately about the contents of the article: It is the foremost ‘duty’ of the title that it
would tell readers (and not mislead) about what the article is about.

2. Is simple, direct, clear, brief and attractive: A good title should be interesting, easy to read and
understand and catchy. It should convey information in an unambiguous and precise manner. It should
not be open to multiple interpretations and should not confuse the readers about the message it intends
to communicate. The issue of appropriate length of a title is hotly debated with contrasting suggestions.
Some journals go to the extent of actually prescribing the number of words (generally 10-15 words) or
characters that can be used in a title. A lengthy title may seem unfocused, distracting and outright
boring. However, if the title is long it must be written in inverted pyramid format (the succeeding lines
must be shorter than the first line. An Example is shown below.

Giftedness, Trauma, and Development: A Qualitative,

Longitudinal Case Study

3. Does not contain abbreviations or jargon: Use of non-standard abbreviations in the title distracts and
disturbs readers. If acronyms have to be used in the title, it is advisable to spell them out. Otherwise,
there is a possibility that readers, not familiar with the acronym, might skip the article altogether.
Similarly, titles with jargon, too many technical words or chemical formulas are considered

1
uninteresting, unwieldy and difficult to read and can confuse readers, inducing them to shun the article
altogether.

4. Does not contain numerical values of the parameters: There is generally no need to include numbers in
the title (For example, “Use of probiotics in children with diarrhea is associated with reduction of 11.3+/-
2.1 hours in the duration of diarrhea”). Some authors use numbers disclose the study period or to
mention the number of participants, if the sample size studied is quite large.

5. It is line with the tenor of the paper: Medical research is a serious business. Hence, it is better to avoid
amusing or hilarious titles for research articles. Although they might attract some initial attention,
findings in articles with amusing or humorous titles are usually taken less seriously and are cited less
often.

6. Includes keywords used for indexing: If key words that are used for searching or indexing are used in
the title, the article is more likely to be accessed.

Suggested topics:

1. Family situations during the pandemic

2. The experiences of patients with infected by COVID-19
3. The front-liners experiences during the spread of the COVID-19
4. Victims during a disaster
5. Teenage pregnancy
6. The learners’ struggles of the present time
7. Teachers battling the risk of being infected by virus
8. The elderly’s experiences during lockdown
Statement of the problem (Research Questions)
In the qualitative fields, research questions and methodological choices involve some practical
problems. First of all, it is possible to identify some coherence problems. When we speak about coherence
problems in qualitative research, we emphasize the bonds existing between the different steps and content of
the research process. It is very important to explain how every research step is linked to the others and
especially how the process starts (the research question) and finishes (the results presentation and
interpretation) (Crescentini & Mainardi, 2009). The research problems must be in lined with the research title
so that the answers to these problems will explain the entire content of the study.

Choosing the right question and the right research problem is the key to success for every research.
Any absurdity, confusion, or loopholes in the research question and research problem will continue throughout
the research. One should know precisely what is the research problem and its objectives (Readingcraze,
2013).

Activity 2: My Proposal Research Title and Statement of the Problem

Directions: Write three titles of your proposed study topic and the statement of the problem. An
example of a qualitative study title and statement of the problem by Fernandez, Somido, & Yango (2016) is
shown below.

Title: Inside Look: Educational Manager’s Four Life Quadrants

Statement of the Problem

This study sought to investigate the real life of educational managers in handling work, and their own
life. Specifically, this study will answer the following problems:
1. What are the difficulties, problems and challenges educational mangers have experienced related
to their four life quadrants (family, work, self and friends or community)?
2. How did the educational managers managed the challenges, problems and difficulties related to
their four life quadrants?

III. Engagement

What’s more? Well after writing the title and specific research questions, we will further explore the
research scope and delimitation and significance of the study.

About Research Scope and Delimitation

The scope and delimitation of a study sets the boundaries and parameters of the problem inquiry and
narrows down the scope of the inquiry. Scope is the domain of a research-what is in the domain and what is
not.
There is a distinction between limitation and delimitation. Limitation is associated with qualitative study
as related to validity and reliability while delimitation refers to the boundaries of a research study arising from
the researcher’s decision of what to exclude.

What should be written in the Scope and Delimitation

1. A brief statement of the general purpose of the study.
2. The subject matter and topics to be studied and discussed.
3. The locale of the study where the data will be gathered or the entity which the data belong.
4. The population where the participants will be selected.
5. The period of the study - the months and the year during which the data will be gathered.

Significance of the Study

What must be included in this part of the research? The word significance clearly means the
importance of doing the study. What we need to consider are the following:
1. Who will benefit in the study (whether individuals or group of people or organization) and;
2. How can they will benefit from the results and findings of the study?

Activity 3: My Research’s Significance and Scope and Delimitation

Directions: Based on the discussion above, Write the Scope and Delimitation of your Study. An
example is shown below by Fernandez, L. (2018).

Scope and Delimitation

This research intends to determine the lived experiences of the participants and how they were able to
surpass the challenges they encountered in their Mathematics subject only. This research will be confined only
to the portals of Infant Jesus Montessori center (Junior High School) for its study. Considerations will be given
to the purposively selected participants (students at risk in Mathematics) enrolled in junior high school level
during the school year 2017-2018.
