Happiness

Happiness is defined in psychology as a state of emotional well-being and life satisfaction, categorized into hedonia (pleasure) and eudaimonia (personal fulfillment). Despite advancements in technology and material wealth, many still experience unhappiness, often linked to the neglect of spiritual needs and a disconnection from God. True happiness is found in the contentment of the soul, achieved through a strong connection with Allah, purification of the heart, and righteous deeds.

Happiness

Happiness is an abstract feeling and pursuit of happiness is eternal human nature.

According to psychology,
“happiness is defined as a state of emotional well-being and life satisfaction.”
Psychologists describe two types of happiness namely:
• Hedonia (happiness as pleasure)
It is usually associated with pursuit of pleasure, enjoyment, absence of discomfort. t
might be in the form enjoying a big house, best food, fancy clothing and cosmetics,
travel and tours or an established business.
• eudaimonia (happiness as personal fulfillment)
Its main focus is on activities reflecting moral excellence, duty, virtue and the
fulldevelopment of our potentials. For example, donating to a needy, taking care of the
sick, flurishing in your profession etc. It might involve or accompany pleasure, but it
doesn’t seek it.
Today, man has made huge advances in technology to make life easier and comfortable,
yet we see that unhappiness still exists in all the societies.
Why is it so?
We can quote the examples of some famous people who comitted
sucide inspite of having all such things.
Name Suicide year and Reason
Chester Bennington 2017American singer and songwriter, hanging, (substance abuse
and depression)

Mark Fisher 2017English writer, Philosopher, struggling with depression

Caroline Flack 2020 an English television presenter and actress, suicide

Phillip Adams 2021American football player, suicide

Jason David Frank 2022 American actor and mixed martial artist, sucide due to depression
Happiness
All of them had gained what was dreamed of by thousands of the
people of the world, then what led them to commit suicide?
To answer many such questions, we need to discuss the

We human beings are composition of both body and soul. Our body
can somehow be regarded as a mixture of chemicals, but our soul is
a higher entity than a body.
The reality of human existence is the soul. This body is merely a
mean of transportation of our soul.
There are many needs and requirements of our body. Just like our
body, our soul also has some needs to be fulfilled.
Since our body is from the Earth, everything it needs also belongs to
the Earth, whereas our soul is from Allah (SWT) and its needs also
belong to Allah (SWT).
Happiness
Infact, external goods such as wealth, health, status and other material possessions
also contribute to our well-being and to the nurturing of virtue. But a passionate
attachment to material possessions can be harmful in different ways ways.
• Fullfillment of material gains mostly keeps on increasing, which can make one
greedy, selfish and proud.
• Deprivation of material possessions can lead to hopelessness, ungratefulness,
sadness and jealousy
In both the cases one can be victim of pschlogical diseases like stress, depression and
anxiety, which can result in suicide.

Allah Almighty states in thr Holy Quran:

“Are you content with the life of this world, rather than with the hereafter? Yet the
enjoyment of the life of this world compared with the hereafter is but little.”
( At-Tawba:38)
The real standard of happiness lies in contentment of the soul, which is associated with the
contentment of heart. The contentment of heart is based on connection to the God, Allah
Almighty. As He Says in the Holy Quran,
“Only in the remembrance of Allah (SWT) will your hearts ever find rests.”
[ Ar-Rad: 28]
This connection is build through;
(i) the zikr (remembrance) of Allah (SWT)
(ii) perfoming righteous deeds

and this connection is strenthened through

(iii) the purification of heart

The Messnger of Allah (SAWW) said,
“Beware, in the body there is a flesh; , and if it is
corrupt, the whole body is corrupt, and behold, it is the heart.”[Bukhari & Muslim]
Allah Almighty says in the Holy Quran,

“ indeed are those .

But you prefer the life of this world,

even though the Hereafter is far better and more .” (Al-A'la: 14)
Our spiritual heart resides inside our physical heart. There are different states of a spiritual
heart namely;
• Contented heart (Qalb e Saleem)
• Sick or Diseased heart (Qalb e Mareez)
• Blind or dead heart (Qlb e Myat)
Contented Heart : It is a state when one relieves himself of all types of love of duniya and
evil emotions, longs for Allah’s love and remains contented with the Will of Allah ‫ ﷻ‬all
situations whether farvorable or difficult.
Blind heart : It is the heart that no longer feels fear from Allah Almighty. It has lost the very
insight to differentiate between right and wrong. It loses the ability to recognize and accept the
truth.
“Have you seen he who has taken as his god his [own] desire, and Allah has sent him astray
due to knowledge and has set a seal upon his hearing and his heart and put over his vision a veil?
So, who will guide him after Allah? Then will you not be reminded?”
[ Al-Jathiyah: 2]
Diseased Heart:
This type of spiritual heart is the one which is distracted either by doubts or by evil desires and emotions. A
person with a spiritually diseased heart indulges in sins but feels regretful after committing sins.

Two major diseases of the spiritual heart are and Shahawaat (Base desires).

means doubting Islam and Lordship of Allah (SWT).Such doubts cause restlessness of
the heart and weaken the faith.
Example: One doubts of whether he will get rizaq (living) or not? , Will Allah forgive him or not?

Shahawaat are the base desires and love of duniya. These cause one to transgress the limits of Allah Almighty.
A follower of desires becomes selfish and extravagant. He forsakes the greater good in pursuit of temporary
pleasures.

A diseased heart needs treatment, which is termed as tazkiyyah-e-qalb.

Treatment of a sick soul or heart
Following are a few steps to cure the diseases of heart or soul .
1.Self-reflection (to identify one’s shortcomigs)
2.Sincere Repentance and seeking forgiveness (Tauba and istighfar)
3.Self-correction (Islah e nafs- leavinging the sins, evil thoughts and desires)
4.Giving charity
5.Performing righteous deeds with sincerity
6.Expecting reward only from Allah
7.Frequent remembrance of Allah (Zikar)
8.Reciting and reflecting on the Holy Quran (tadabbur)
9.Establishing obligatory prayers
10.Joining pious company
11.Making a lot of Dua
12.Helping others in every possible manner
According to the Holy Quran;
“Whoever does good whether male or female and he is a believer, we will most certainly make him
live a happy life, and We will most certainly give them their reward for the best of what they did.”
[Surah An-Nahl:97]
A person with contented heart stays happy in this world because he is nither over-joyed by worldly
gains nor he is over-powered by the worries craeted through the tests of this life. He knows that
nothing is permanent either comfort or difficulty. He goes through the tests with dignity and patience.
He remain grateful and humbled in times of blessing.
He will be also be happy in the life her-after when he will meet his Lord Almighty Allah and find
rewrad in the form of permanent Paradise.
Conclusion:
lies in the contentment of the soul and the heart, which is gained through stronger
connection with Allah Almighty. The purification of the heart plays a key role in forming and
strenthening this connection. So,we should keep struggling for the purification of heart and soul.
