EEE 1204 MATERIAL SCIENCE

Prerequisites

None.

Purpose of the course

The aim of this course is to enable the student to understand electrical properties of different
materials.
Expected Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, the learner should be able to;

1. Use electrical materials in design of different electrical / electronic devices

2. Design, etch and effectively clean circuit boards

Course Content

Electronic Structure of atoms: incorporating quantum mechanics principles (qualitative


approach). Quantum numbers, atomic orbitals and the buildup principle, oxidation-reduction,
absorption. Ionization energy, chemical energies and bonding, chemical equilibrium kinematics.
Molecular orbital theory of bonding and molecular geometry: Characteristics of metallic and
giant covalent molecules. Relationship between bond types and macroscopic properties of
materials.
The crystalline state: Crystal structure and bonding in metals, alloys, ceramics, glasses and
polymers. Macro and micro structures of materials and properties. Crystal directions and planes.
Atomic concentration and surface density. Crystal defects.
Electrical Properties: Conduction in solids (classical or ‘free electron gas’ approach).
Temperature effect of conductivity and corrections for quantum effects. Conductors, insulators,
super-ionic, conductors, Semi
Conduction in amorphous material. Dielectrics, Ferroelectrics Piezoelectrics pyroelectrics,
thermoelectrics materials, magnetic electrics, Electro-striction.
Magnetic Properties: Ferro and ferri magnetism: metals, alloys, ceramics and amorphous
materials. Paramagnetism. Domain theory. Remanence, coercivity, permeability.
Optical Properties: Light propagation, reflection, refraction and dispersion.
Application in devices: Magnetic storage, optical fibres

Laboratory/Practical Exercises

i) Electrical properties of materials.


ii) Magnetic properties of materials.

Mode of Delivery
Two (2) hour lectures and two (2) hour tutorial per week, and at least five 3-hour laboratory
sessions per semester organized on a rotational basis.
