OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, the learners should
be able to:

a. illustrate the different types of Conic

Sections: circle, ellipse, parabola and
hyperbola;
b. define a circle; and
c. determine the standard form of equation
of a circle.

Sections
(circle, parabola, ellipse and hyperbola)
A conic section (or simply conic) is a curve
obtained as the intersection of the surface of a cone
with a plane.
CIRCLE
ILLUSTRATION

Consider this two-

napped right circular
cone.

A line on the cone is called the generator and the only

point where the generators intersect is called the vertex. The
vertical line passing through the vertex is called the axis of the
cone.

If the cutting plane to the cone is parallel to no generator

and is also perpendicular to the axis of the cone, then the curve
of intersection is a circle.
Definition of a Circle
A circle consists of all the points on a
plane that are equidistant from a fixed point,
called the center. The constant distance is
called the radius of the circle.
EXAMPLES
