6 INTRODUCTION

Clearly state the problematic issues or concerns in connection with

your subject matter or MAIN TOPIC with sources
 Provide empirical and theoretical bases
Discuss the importance of studying the main topic or subject matter
and the contributions of studies already conducted about it

Provide here the implications of previous works leading to the reason

and purpose of the current study

Introduce and describe the philosophical paradigm of the study

Describe the theories/viewpoints/perspectives about the main topic

or subject matter
 Present various literature and related studies that discuss about
the main topic or subject matter
 Inject personal discourse on the chosen
theory/proposition/model/study

Integrate definition of key concepts and terms used in the context of

the study

Discuss the research gap (what’s lacking/not yet explored about the
topic; uniqueness of the study), and its urgency (reason for
conducting the study in the locale)

Present the purpose of the study in paragraph form

 Provide one paragraph describing the nature of the study, the
method, the study design, key data collection procedures and
analysis
 Provide the specific research questions; normally follows the
order (ex. for phenomenology)
 Lived experiences/challenges
 Coping
 Insights/lessons learned

Discuss the significance of the study:

 Discuss the global significance (contribution to literature) and
social value (contribution to humanity and community) of the
study
 Identify the specific institution, sector, industry,
groups/community who will directly benefit from the study.
Include benefits to future researchers

Describe the limitations (weakness) and delimitations (constraints) of

the study in terms of study design, data gathered, number of study
participants, and analysis made
7 METHOD

Study Participants

Describe the target population/universe (key profile)

 Mention common attributes or characteristics
 State the sample size, the derivation process and justification
with literature support (depending on the kind of data
collection method employed - ex. IDI, FGD)

Describe the sampling technique or the selection procedure for study

participants and its justification for use with literature support

Discuss inclusion, exclusion and withdrawal criteria of target

participants

Describe your study locale (no need for a map)

 Justify the selection of the study locale by describing the condition
or state of the main topic or the subject matter in the locale

In the case of a single/multi case study, provide description of each

case unit. Highlight its uniqueness from one another

Materials and Instrument

Describe the instruments used in the conduct of in-depth interview,

focus group discussion and/or qualitative survey (e.g. interview guide,
field notes, journals)

Discuss the instrument development procedures if the instrument used

is a researcher-made. Also, state the average validation rating of
expert validators (if applicable)

Design and Procedure

Discuss the appropriate study design used with author; justify its use &
its perspective to the study (e.g. education, business, etc.)
 Describe the special and/or specific approach or technique or
analysis to be used in the study and its role in the achievement of
research questions
 Discuss typology of research in terms of objective dimension and
time dimension

Describe the roles played by the researcher (what is the role and how
it was implemented in the study); explain its relevance towards
credibility of the study

Discuss in detail key steps and procedures that were undertaken (from
asking permission to conduct the study up to transcription of interviews
made) in paragraph form and in a storyline format
 Provide narratives on how data was gathered and the data
collection method used (e.g. in-depth interview/fgd/qualitative
survey)
 Include in the narratives personal experience in the data collection
 Indicate time or period covered by the data collection

Describe the method or approach used in analyzing the data and

finding meaning in the transcripts
 Provide details of the procedures done towards the formulation of
themes or core ideas relative to the research questions

Provide narratives on the trustworthiness of the study

 Emphasize the validity and reliability of qualitative data with
reference to the following criteria:
 Credibility (in preference to internal validity)
 Dependability (in preference to reliability)
 Confirmability (in preference to objectivity)
 Transferability (in preference to external validity or
generalizability)

Discuss the nature and steps implemented to comply with the

research ethics
 No need to describe each of the ethics clause that was complied.
Just highlight key provisions
 Mention the approved or issued ERC certification number
 Compliance certificate from ERC is required before actual data
collection

8 RESULT AND DISCUSSION

Present the descriptive tables outlining the answers (themes) on each

of the qualitative questions/objectives of the study
 Present the themes based on the research question
 The Table normally presents the core ideas/essential theme
and significant statements of the study participants. Core
ideas may also be presented through a Thematic Map (if
applicable)
 Apart from the Table, provide selected narratives from the
significant responses of the participants that confirm or validate
each of the essential themes
 Verbatim responses with audit trail code (center, indented,
single-space, italicized)
 English translation (normal font style)
 Literature support not needed in this segment

Discuss the results (themes) generated for each qualitative

questions/objectives of the study. Support arguments, discourses and
thesis statements with literature citations

Provide at least two discussion paragraphs for each theme:

 Explain and interpret the theme in the context of the study (both
apriori or priori)
 Explicate and provide implication or meaning of the generated
themes
 Provide discussion on how the result of the study supports or
disproves the theoretical lens used in the study
 Discussion per ¶ must be brief, straightforward yet very
comprehensive in a story line format
 Discuss the Thematic map (if applicable)

Enhance the discussion by providing empirical and theoretical findings

from the literature

Remember that the discussion per paragraph must be brief,

straightforward yet very comprehensive in a story line format

Note: Writing Mechanics

 Side head/label for every research question/objective in bold font
 Table number in whole number placed in upper left hand corner
 Table title in italics in upper left hand corner under the Table
number

related investigation pertaining to the subject matter employing other
study designs, participants, and method of data collection

Concluding Remark

Provide the researcher’s personal insights, lessons learned and

realization on the results of the study
