Model Question-1 Full marks: 40

1) What do you mean by steel structures? What are the types of steel sections used in steel
structures? Explain in brief. (1+4)
2) List out the basic assumptions in working stress method. (3)
3) A 8mm thick angle section is joined to a 10mm thick gusset plate. The angle is
supporting a load of 70KN. Find out the number of power driven rivets required to
connect the angle section. (6)
4) Design a column having clear unsupported height 4m, with both end restrained against
translation but not in rotation, subjected to axial working load of 500KN. (8)
5) Design a simply supported beam of effective span 3.5m carrying a factored load of
400KN at mid-span. Check safety against bending and deflection. (8)
6) Explain about the properties of timber. (4)
7) A column of 350mm diameter is made up of Sal. Determine the safe load if its effective
length is 5m. (6)
Model question-II Full Marks: 40

1) What are the advantages and disadvantages of steel structures? Define service load, yield
stress, and permissible stress. (4+2)
2) Calculate the rivet value, strength of riveted joint, and efficiency of the joint with
following data:
Type of joint = Lap joint
Thickness of thicker plate = 14mm
Thickness of thinner plate = 12mm
Use Power Driven rivets. (6)
3) Compute the tensile strength of an angle section ISA 100*100*10mm of Fe410 of grade
of steel connected with a gusset plate by means of welding. Take length of welding as
300mm. (7)
4) Determine the bending moment carrying capacity of ISMB 400. (5)
5) Explain various types of load on roof trusses. (4)
6) What are the factors that affect the strength of timber? List out 4 advantages and 4
disadvantages of timber structure. ( 5)
7) A timber beam having clear span of 6m carries a UDL of 27KN/m including the self
weight. Assuming the beam to be made of Sal wood, design the beam. Check safety
against bending and shear. Use select grade timber. (7)
Model question-III Full Marks: 40

1) What is characteristics strength and permissible stress of steel? Write down the design
steps of an axially loaded tension member in WSM. (6)
2) A gusset plate (200*12mm) is subjected to a load of 200KN. Calculate rivet value,
number of rivets required, and efficiency of riveted joint if the joint is double cover
riveted butt joint. Assume power driven rivets. (7)
3) Design a column having clear height 3.2m, with both end restrained against rotation and
translation, subjected to axial design compressive load of 600KN. (8)
4) Design a simply supported beam of effective span 4m carrying a UDL of 10KN/M and
point load 200KN at mid-span. Check safety against bending and shear. (8)
5) A column of 200mm is made up of Oak wood. Determine the safe axial load if it’s
effective length of 3m. (4)
6) A timber beam having clear span of 6m carries a UDL of 20KN/m and point load of
200KN. Assuming the beam to be made of Teak wood, design the beam. Check safety
against bending and deflection. (7)
